IF they tried to depict her having a breakdown, they failed, because in her first "breakdown" she's whispering and in her subsequent "breakdowns" in the next episode she is calm enough to shut up when asked to be quiet, and so on.

In "The Bounty Hunters and the Princess," Jack ruthlessly defeats the (male) bounty hunters, but only knocks down the princess with a simple push. I only ever saw Korra's first season, but I can see your stance. It's been awhile since I've seen it, like years, though. I didn't stop watching because I dropped it, I just forgot about it. I didn't like Korra sometimes though. From what I remember the world building was just where Korra stayed, some of her city, and the firebending arena place. That wasn't bad in my opinion but I get why people would want to expand.

When I saw the 4chan threads during the premire of S5 E1, watching how much they loved it, one of the first things I thought was there was no way this was gonna last. The guy has been alone for years, the only thing that sustained him being his belief in his cause to defeat aku. He didn't kill her when she was lying in the snow because she was no longer a threat. But when Jack heard the girl spout this brainwashed Aku propaganda painting himself as the villain, that was an attack on his sense of justice. He needs her to see the conflict from his perspective and understand that he is in the right to keep his will to live.

Her whole thing is pretty dumb

The way that he's eerily friendly with Ashi while also talking to himself, doesn't that remind you of crazies on the bus? He's slowly become a sociopath. No longer the calm, pragmatic, disciplined Jack.

Him switching between depressive and manic states, then suddenly becoming ultra focused during intense situations is similar to shell-shock sufferers.

Actually pay attention to the episodes. Jack has been burying his guilt for 50 years. Each time he reaches a breaking point, he does something "heroic" like save alien dog sluts or defeat a miniboss. It's become an escape that numbs his guilt for all of about an afternoon before the nightmares come back. This is just another bout of his madness, except it might actually lead to his salvation. That's what's leading to closure. It's called storytelling.

Personally I think Ashi is a great character to introduce, providing a pro-Aku prespective that becomes less ignorant of the world and changes as a result. Ashi also serves as a symbol of Jack's regret of killing people, signaling the turning point in Jack's adventure from just surviving to wanting to defeat Aku once again.
