Well, how tough is Aku supposed to be against conventional threats? There doesn't appear to be a middle ground for him. Either a magic sword can cut through him like butter, or nothing else can hurt him at all.

Aku is basically liquid. Cuts are meaningless and his substance is apparently impervious to fire and other hazards. Only the sword was able to burn it with magic/purity.

So technically, no amount of conventional weaponry is going to work against Aku. Even magical based items like the Doomslayer sword probably won't work unless they're specifically 'good' power to counter Aku's evil.

classic doom guy could run 55 miles an hour, carry all of that shit, take tons of damage, carry tons of shit, hit really hard.

the only difference is new doomguy can jump twice, old doom guy can't jump but run 4 times as fast.

with the bfg, aku goes down. nothing can handle the bfg. and if he survives, rip and tear. doom guy defies logic.
