I love Max, but he's totally wrong here. It's possible for a character to be funny while also being deep. The Joker isn't just popular because he's funny, it's also because we can all relate to him. In his best incarnations, e's someone who realizes how pointless and horrible everything is, so he just wants to laugh at the world and fuck with people. Joe Dante was originally supposed to direct a Batman movie, but he rejected it because he sympathized with the Joker more than he did Batman. Which makes sense, since this is the guy behind Gremlins, and the villains in Gremlins are basically just feral Jokers.

The reason why Jared Leto's version of the Joker sucked so much is that it panders to the lowest common denominators of people who think that him being "Le wacky but crazy villain XD" is what makes him interesting, but in reality it's just much dumber. Like the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland movies.

But that doesn't mean that the Joker can't be subject of various interpretations.

This. In the comics he started off as a serial killer that looked like a clown and has gone through multiple interpretations since.
Even in the films you have the mostly joke-based Joker (Jack Nicholson's take) the funny-but-still-scary Joker (Heath Ledger's take) and even a modern-gangster/mob-boss-who's-also-crazy Joker (Jared Leto's take, maybe with some inspiration from the "art" based Jokers or the DKR Joker).

There was lots of physical humor in his performance too, like the way he exits the mob meeting, emptying a champagne glass only to pretend to drink from it, that "Not sure if serious..." face he gives the guy who stands up to him at the party, mocking the henchman who got electrocuted by Batman's cowl... he's funny in an offbeat, kinda dark way.

I don't get /co/'s fixation NO HE'S GOTS TO BE HILARIOUS ALL THE TIMES because I never really found The Joker genuinely funny. Even as a kid, I thought the whole point was that his old jokes and obvious puns were unfunny, and you'd have to be insane to laugh at them.

It depends. There were times where he'd sort of cross the line twice or get put into a situation that actually was funny. Arkham Knight in particular does that sort of thing.

In my mind, he's probably closest to Jack Nicholson's take: He's clearly styled after it, lacks the nihilism of Ledger Joker and still does over the top schemes or does schemes for petty reasons.

The Joker makes joked but he doesn't have to be funny. Some Jokers can be very funny, but what's more important is that Joker makes jokes, plans them, sets them up, some work and some don't.

Joker wants to be funny, he doesn't have to be a tool for comedy.

I haven't played that'n yet. I agree that he CAN be funny, but since the essence of comedy is subverting expectations, I don't mind when he doesn't do the more obvious schtick, i.e. spring-loaded pies, squirting flowers... like, for cartoons and stuff aimed at kids, that's fine, because it's still novel and funny to them, but after a while you EXPECT the Joker to always have an acid-squirting flower lapel or an exploding pie in his back pocket. It's predictable. Rote. Old hat.

In both the comics and DCAU, Joker has made a big deal about trying to keep his material on the razor's edge, and is quick to dismiss any idea he deems "hokey". I imagine that since there's 50+ years of him doing the more conventionally Joker-y stuff nowadays, writers and, consequently, the character are afraid of it getting old.
