/co/ just doesn't feel the need to discuss shows that have little left to discuss. But then you have hatedom minorities that get off to shows they don't enjoy and can't shut up about it. The tendency of people on the internet to be baited into responding to people saying dumb things goes without saying.

While Steven's progress in some of the more recent eps has been obnoxious, he's honestly a decently written character. You can slowly see his growth from naive, fearful, and unskilled to slowly gaining power, morals and fortitude. He still gets caught off guard and taken advantage of but he's slowly become more cynical and more fed up with how few answers he's been given in exchange for all the problems that've cropped up.

S1 Steven almost never called the gems on their shit and he's been doing it pretty regularly recently.

The fact that anyone is saying Steven just goes to show now defined by hating other shows the R&M fanbase is. It's why they don't make a general. The show attracts self absorbed cunts who spend a good portion of their time telling everyone how stupid they all are instead of unironically enjoying things, and thus don't want to be grouped into a general and made a target. However this fear of diagnosis is enough to be diagnosed.

That would have to be Steven for me...

...

Both are pretty much Gary Stus...

Rick is a unstable psychopath and an cynical arsehole, but everyone in the setting accepts this and calls him out on it, and Rick himself relishes in it, so whatever...

Steven on the other hand, is just too amiable, too diplomatic, too naive, and too goddamned dense to make for an enjoyable protagonist. Especially since the fact that he has these qualities is something that is turned into the butt of a joke, improved upon, or even acknowledged, by the show. Compound that with a voice and design which just grates on my nerves...

I'm from /v/. I don't play video games, I just bitch about them.

From what I've heard though the gameplay is the best of the entire series but the facial animations are fucked and will remain fucked for the foreseeable future. Apparently some high up in Bioware told the dev team to not waste any time into touching up their newfangled mocap and Eastern European Bioware studio animation.

Beyond that I hear a lot of bitching from waifufags that they didn't get to see their bird waifu naked.

I can't tell if you are deflecting the issue or lack reading comprehension.

I said most people say the gameplay is the best in the series, you implied they are wrong, I said I am not willing to take your word for it, you tried deflecting by claiming that you didn't imply that without even so much as posting what you did mean to sort out the supposed miscommunication. If you seriously believed it was a miscommunication you would have elaborated, instead you shitpost.
>>
>>91349768
And you have to either ridiculously contort what likable means to choose Rick over Steven or be seriously deranged. The entire point of Rick's character is that he is a miserable person that doesn't give a shit about others.

>but Steven is a faggy good person and isn't an edgy mad scientist who kills entire planets! How could anyone like Steven?! XD XD
>>
>>91349632
Because he has Mary Sue flaws, "flaws" that just end up making him look even better and closer to perfect.
>>91344945
He just has the ugliest, most off putting character design I've ever seen outside of deliberately shitty series (Problem Solverz, Uncle Grandpa, Clarence, etc.)

Any kind of off model pose or facial expression ends up looking like shit because Steven already looks like shit. He triggers memories of this fat autistic kid who was a year or two older than everyone, was constantly wet from sweat (his shirt would stick to his body like an extra layer of skin), he would just stand close to you and breathe uncomfortably out of his mouth. I can almost smell the lip sweat.

I don't want to see Jessie from my High School as a generically proportioned cartoon character who can do no wrong. The show treats Steven like his cute, but it reminds me of fat hambeasts who think they're cute. The way Rebecca normalizes his obesity and thinks it's endearing or powerful is disgusting to me on a moral level.

I think he's just supposed to be fat, man. There's even an episode where he resolves to get into shape (but flakes out on it).
>>
>>91349903
>Because he has Mary Sue flaws
Hardly. Steven has genuine flaws. He had more in the beginning, but through character growth he became more of an asset to the Crystal Gems.

>The way Rebecca normalizes his obesity and thinks it's endearing or powerful is disgusting to me on a moral level.
You don't even know what you're talking about. How is his fatness normalized? Not once has their been any positive talk about his weight or fat people in general. And him being confident in his appearance has nothing to do with that.

>I don't want to see Jessie from my High School as a generically proportioned cartoon character who can do no wrong.

No you don't. I like Rick's character over Steven, because an active character is more interesting than a passive one. Rick is an opportunist that will use anything at his disposal to get what he wants or remove threats. While Steven will idly sit by until something forces him to act.

Id say rick is more likeable due to the fact that no matter what he ever manages to create or destroy, he will at every point be personally undermined by his own crippling loneliness, perpetuated by the emotional walls he establishes to protect the insecurities that he cannot fully justify due to his brilliance, but still feels nontheless due to his humanity.

IMO steven's strongest character moment was just opening up to the cool kids in the car out of nowhere. The idea that someone is both understanding of their mental and emotional holdups and yet still seeks to live over them while never really knowing what to do about them makes for a pretty human feeling character.

But again, thats really Ricks ENTIRE character. Its why the Unity episode is so strong. Rick absolutely falls for someone he shows he doesnt consider his intellectual equal, and even forgets about running around the galaxy looking for distractions, only to be told BY Unity that his personality is so strong that it pushes her own goals and desires to the wayside (something i think almost everyone experiences going through relationships one way or the other) has to leave him for her own good. Even when at his most loving, his strengths become his weaknesses and he gets seen as toxic.
>>
>>91349632

I liked Steven a lot in the first season when he acted like a normal kid growing up (and wasn't the size of a stump).

I think the new storyboarders looked at the near-death-experience PTSD moments he had early season 2 and misinterpreted them as a defining characteristic of Steven. Then they decided to write him as the most emotionally fragile character in all cartoons. Flanderization at its finest.
>>
>>91350819
The Test was a lot better of a moment for the gems than for steven himself. The idea that theyd make up bullshit tests as a response for having no idea what was most important for him is great.

Steven's "moment" is deciding not to get mad about it and understanding that they were just trying their best with what they had. Its nice that he didnt decide to be a dick about it i guess, but it doesnt add a lot for him as a character internally.

Dont forget that his speach with the kids in the car contained steven showing an understanding that the gems probably resent him for just existing, its a way better character moment.
>>
Steven is less likable, because they don't acknowledge it.
It's like Voldemort versus Umbridge or 4chan vs Tumblr. If you're going to be shit, own it. Rick and Morty owns the fact that Rick's a trash person.
>>
>>91350858
Yes but that can make him likeable. theres a reason Mary Sue is a negative term. Flawed people can be more relatable and thus likable. Its like enjoying the lyrics of the blues over disco

Because they're idiots. They still try to push the meme of Steven crying and the universe bending over backwards to solve all the problems, even though crying has never not once solved the conflict of the episode, and there's only like one or two times Steven actually cried when his life was in danger, and both times he had to get over himself.
>>
>>91350690
Rick's character has the depth of a teaspoon. We get all this drama about how Rick's a victim of his own intellect but it doesn't mean anything if every episode afterward Rick engages in self-centered, callous escapades for the sake of just doing it. Who gives a fuck when the show tries to pull a sappy moment if Rick's just gonna blow your brains out and replace you and everything goes on without a hitch. I cringe every time the show tries to pass itself for "omg so much drama, look how serious Morty is and how sad Rick is" I can't even take it serious because how silly the show is. It's cheap as hell.

You seem to be missing the subtle social cues indicating that Stephen's severe obesity is not, in fact, normal. Or, at least, it shouldn't be normal. I won't lie, I get pandering. When the Persian characters showed up on American Dad, I started watching it solely because the show got them right (a little too perfect and peachy, though). Likewise, I'm sure it must mean a lot to you to see a character that pants audibly through his wet nostrils whenever he has to walk outside.

>but it doesn't mean anything if every episode afterward Rick engages in self-centered, callous escapades for the sake of just doing it.

But thats the point, that IS the drama of being the victim of your own crippling insecurities to the point of having to distance yourself from everyone you meet and constantly drinking yourself into submission.

The difference between a character like Rick and someone like Bojak is the show's shtick that rick has the means by which to change most of his universe around to fit him as best as possible, and it still never makes him happy because it isnt the universe he'd need to change, its himself. The happiest we've ever seen him was partying with some ex without trying to change the universe in any way, just because he happened to care for her.

>Who gives a fuck when the show tries to pull a sappy moment if Rick's just gonna blow your brains out and replace you and everything goes on without a hitch.

But anon, there is a hitch. Theres always been a hitch, and its the cost of Rick's emotional state and wellbeing. When Morty and he go to the new dimension and settle in, we see Morty's shock and mental inability to fully comprehend not just the fragility of life but its forgetability.

Now id agree with you that IF Rick were just immune and calloused to all this shit, then he wouldnt be that interesting, but the point im trying to make is that Rick is in fact emotional eating himself from the inside by suppressing the external shit he causes. I actually had really hoped the season three premier cutbacks would never end and the show would stop, because i loved how season 2 ended with rick, despite having done everything in his power too help, still lost everything and in the end decided to give up and go to prison.
