It's safer than his old personality from a writing standpoint. If he's an idiot and you go too far with it you can always spin it as humor or use it to springboard an easy "getting my shit together" story. His old personality was kind of an asshole and if you went too far with it then you'd have more trouble getting around it and risk alienating readers fast.
