Decades ago I read JtHM before Zim existed, including comics he wrote in high and I think maybe middle school.

He was a typical edgy antisocial goth outcast kid and doesn't like to interact with other people much, or maybe I should say he's introverted. that hasn't changed, I heard he spent years after Zim mostly running WoW guild raids on his Forsaken Warlock.

Also, his fans are annoying, though from his early comics, he was exactly like them when he was a kid, teen, and young adult. Maybe he realizes that and he's embarrassed by it though.

As others are saying, like here, it depends on the person. Tumblr started with porn and art, it still has porn, it still has good art. It also has obnoxious assholes who harass and make life hell for the artists and non-SJWs on tumblr. Lots of artists especially post there because that's really the platform for art right now, and that's all, but some crazy kid might decide you're problematic and then doxx you or track you down and knock on your door to harass you in real life over your art. The crazy and stupid live right along the actually pretty chill or talented people.

I remember in the JTHM special edition commentary, Jhonen talked a lot about how he's never considered himself a goth. He grew up surrounded by the aesthetic and likes it visually. Basically he just drew shit he liked and thought was funny and was surprised to actually find an audience.

I don't think Jhonen hates his fans per se, he just doesn't relate to them at all. He never took Zim seriously and it's weird to him that some people do.

To be honest, it's probably for the best. There's nothing wrong with enjoying something, but fandom culture is pretty awful. It's completely abjecting yourself to being a consumer; even if you make art, you're making it in relation to the show. You're making yourself a carbon-copy human being.
