I realize the point of Rick is that he's a massive dick. But this first episode of Season 3 he really goes beyond the pale.

Then there was his rant at the end where he says he did what he did to Jerry because he slighted him. That's so extremely petty. Then he admits he only saved Morty and SUmmer to take over the family. Well, you know, going by season 2's first episode, he did care enough about Morty to sacrifice his existence for him.

As for abandoning his older Smith family for the current set; he may just not have grown attached to them. With Summer, he only started getting along with her later into season 1 and it was only in season 2 did he start taking her out on adventures.

And Rick is crazy. Let's not forget that. He can be totally fine, emotionally speaking, one moment, then a total spaz and douche the next. You shouldn't try to look for much consistency with him as he's more of a plot device for others to revolve around.

Yeah, in Season 1 we got a good balance of him outsmarting people but also not being perfect. Like the end of the simulation of a simulation of a simulation, where he can't tell if Morty's real or not. That was a nice stinger that prevented the whole "He's got everything figured out" thing from getting too annoying.

But then, he completely outsmarted the Devil, so it's not like they overdid it with his flaws. It was a good balance.

Season 1 Rick also had moments where he was nice to his family, but not in a "Awww, look, he really loves them" way. More like just... having character that extends beyond 9th grade nihilism. Like him helping Summer get back at the Devil, lightening up on Morty when the Jellybean King tries to rape him, him just having fun with Summer and Morty when time gets frozen, him just chilling with Scary Terry, the whole butthamster vacation.

With the possible exception of the last one, none of these instances were some big "Look, he's got good qualities" moments desperately trying to get us to still like him. It was just his good side. Season 2, and seemingly 3 have basically erased his good side except for the occasional moment where they basically Clockwork Orange your eyes open and make you see that he's, like, totally nice deep down.
