After that episode there are multiple times during fights where Jack takes a leap and jumps an impossible distance. I seem to recall in Jack vs The Zombies there's a part where he falls into a zombie filled mausoleum and escapes by jumping up through a hole in the roof.

Really if anything he retained the ability to a degree, but it was just nerfed into the ground.

The only thing that can kill Aku isn't just the sword, it's the sword + plot device reason.

Jack will keep failing until they're done telling this story, so no matter how well trained or skilled he is, it won't matter until it's the end.

That's the major thing that keeps SJ from feeling compelling and reminds me it's just a very well made cartoon not an epic story.

That's something that bothered me, too. The whole point of Jack's quest is to get within slicing distance of Aku so he can finally kill him, but he's done that several times and it's never worked. It's not just like in the gangster episode, where Jack comes close to killing him but some special circumstance gets in his way, or the first few episodes where Aku is trapped and nearly defeated but pulls some clever trick to escape. Aku can teleport, fly, and turn into small animals; he has so many ways of escaping that there's pretty much no way for Jack to kill him even if he does manage to track down Aku and defeat him in combat. He's done it before and it didn't work, so why should we care if he does it again?

It's one thing to know that Jack is always going to fall short of his goal because the plot will get in the way until the show's ready to end. There are lots of shows like that, and they're still exciting because the chances and struggles are meaningful to the main character. But if his goal just plain doesn't work even if/when he reaches it, and this happens several times, then the story isn't as compelling as it could be.

Yes, but most of those handle it better than Samurai Jack. A lot of shows are about a hero striving for some specific goal, and never being able to reach it because it would ruin the plot. We know that the hero ~won't~ reach his goal no matter how close he gets, but that's different from a hero who logically ~can't~ reach his goal and isn't actually getting any closer even when it seems like he is.

For example, there's Invader Zim. You know that Dib is never going to succeed in exposing Zim, and that Zim is never going to conquer the planet or kill Dib. But they're both capable of doing those things with the right opportunity, so it's interesting when one of them gets that chance and the other has to counter their plans. The plot is exciting because it's believable that one of them could have victory in their grasp, even if we know that it will slip through their fingers.

With Samurai Jack, however, Jack has successfully grasped victory several times, except it wasn't actually victory. It's exciting when Jack is trying to escape danger, because we've seen him get hurt and we know he could be killed if he slips up, but with Aku there's no reason to think he couldn't just escape again like he always does.

Why can't Jack just build an Aku compass?
When Jack defeated the ultra bots, Aku's essence began to escape in a specific direction, probably to rejoin Aku's main body. Why won't Jack try to trap a bit of it, possibly in a magically runed jar, and then travel in the direction it's pushing.

Maybe over time, Jack can warm up towards it, as a pet of sorts. Feed it stuff, make it learn tricks.
