If you look at the pentagram looking thing when it's listing off The Endless there's no bottom triangle, this could be reserved for Dusk, the 8'th Endless introduced in Overture. You'll also notice that in the listings of the Emotional Spectrum there's a missing top triangle, this could be reserved for the Phantom Ring which we know channels all emotions/colors, but what if it has its own abilities and emotion we don't know about yet? Unpopular opinion: Sandman is a bit like Transmetropolitan in that it has absolutely stand-out, amazing short arcs and single issues but the conclusion is weak and taken as a whole it's overrated. The art also doesn't get enough credit vs. Gaiman's writing.

I don't think Sandman, or Watchmen for that matter, need to be afforded any special sanctity. They will always stand as their own works. If you write in some subpar prequel, addition or aftermath that's on you, not on the original text. They can't "ruin" Sandman because it's already done.

Destiny: Machines. Machines are closed systems immutable to their design. They lead to one defined result only. As does Destiny. It just so happens his closed system, though immutable, contains every possibility.

Death: Rot, though it seems like a surface connection.

Dream: Stories. It's literally the point of Sandman.

Desire/Despair: Animals/Plants. These 2 endless are a duality, and they represent the 2 things that drive animal instinct and plant "behavior", if it can be called that: the want for sustenance and the avoidance of damage.

Destruction: Bacteria. Lower, simpler forms of organic life, they represent the breaking down of, and the evolution into, more complex life forms. I wish there'd been a "chemical" parliament, because that'd fit better.

Delirium: Fungi. Also a cheap connection, but fungi

This doesn't mean organic life of any kind; concepts are treated as sentient life in the Sandman mythos.

Under this definition, they're all younger than sentient life, but only if you count concepts as sentient life, rather than counting only meat and bone kind of life.

That said, they came to be in a specific order. Destiny existed, perhaps retroactively, since the moment the possibility of existence first appeared. Death began when life began, as life cannot be without death. Dream began as soon as that first being dreamt, then Desire and Despair, then Destruction, then Delight.

-Delirium is younger than sentient life in the traditional sense... but before that, she was Delight. She changed fundamentally (more fundamentally than Despair to Despair 2 or Dream to Daniel), but strictly speaking, she's still the same entity. So although her concept changed, she's continuously being alive from the start of the universe.

My head canon is that The Spectre used to be the Archangel Raguel who was turned into Aztar after rebelling and then turned into Spectre as penance. The old man in Murder Mysteries is actually The Spectre remembering his past and taking the form of Jim Corrigan as he would have looked if he had aged. I'd place it after Corrigan's funeral but before Spectre had to go wherever he went before Hal became The Spectre.
