Spongebob used to have actual comedic timing, there was life in every scene and every bit of dialogue had punch to it. There were also periodic bits of silence which allowed the dialogue to breathe

Nowadays there's literally a musical cue for every single thing that happens, no silence to speak of. I don't even like the newer music choices anyway, they all sound terrible. At times it's frustrating to watch the show just writhe in pain and other times I'm genuinely interested in what they come up with, because it's not all bad. Season 4 had its problems but FUCK it was miles better than what's being aired now

This was the point where I gave up all hope. It wasn't that good for a while before then but specials tended to be great, and at the time it was easily one of the WORST things Spongebob had put out.
