I guess it depends what sort of chastity you like. Even if he couldn't save himself, there is one thing he could save. His wife! With no other options, he sets the single device to any universe that was stable in that exact moment, which means the only one not being destroyed, and sends her away while each of the four succumb to being wiped out.

Now our hero lives what he thinks is a normal life, until four different versions of his wife show up, and they're all in love with him! Since there's no difference between the man they loved and himself, down to the memory of romance, they still want him!

If I had to cook up an original idea, it would probably have to do with either animals or a giant person just to circumvent any anatomy debates that take you out of the story.
