A lot of the heroes in the DC universe are pretty swell personally, and on the big picture they represent a lot of things. Hope, bravery, just a lot of big concepts you know?

If you're gonna be the enemy of someone like that, you can't just half ass the motivations. The hate has to be the real fucking deal.

I don't know too much about Aquaman or the Flash's morality, but Superman doesn't kill because he sees the worth and value of every single sentient life and recognizes that everything has an inherent goodness that needs to be realized in order to actually work. And Batman doesn't kill because he recognizes that he's a deeply unwell person, and that if he starts with the Joker, he'll end with jay-walkers.

Because villains having an intense personal relationship (be it hatred or otherwise) with the hero makes it more believable when they keep clashing over and over.

A friendlier version is Flash with his Rogues, who understand that they could do a lot worse than Flash and will from time to time prevent him from getting murdered.

The thing that makes Thawne edge out over the competition is the fact he does not mind meticulously going through time to hurt Barry throughout his life if possible.

Because the sort of thing that he did in the Black Ring is just so deeply sad. It's the sort of thing that you see an alcoholic doing when they choose their drink over their family, or a gambler taking out a mortgage to pay for his ballooning debt. He had the opportunity to prove himself right, and to seize the power and the glory that he's always wanted, but he couldn't let go of his hate. He would've been loved and revered by the entire universe for the rest of eternity, but if it meant that Superman was happy too then fuck it all.

The thing that's between him and Superman is the whole, "if you're so great, why don't you ever do anything worthwhile, Lex?" He had the opportunity in the palm of his hand, and he let it go.

There was a pre crisis story where Lex got stranded on an alien world. He settled down there, and married a woman and started a family and was happy.

He then built a super Lex telescope and just happened to see Superman flying through space. The mere sight of Superman and reminder that he existed caused Lex to end up coming up with some insane plan that ended up blowing up the alien planet killing his wife and child.

iirc, it ended with Lex clutching onto a fragment of the planet and swearing vengeance on Superman as it was clearly his fault.
