The Jem movie was a massive failure, but is anybody else disappointed we didn't at least get to see a sequel if only for the Misfits?
>>
All I wanted was an animated film or a new cartoon. A kids targeted film would never work.
>>
>>91183986
I feel like it could have worked, even if it was never going to be a massive success or go over well with older fans I feel like it could have easily avoided being the massive failure it was if it was decently promoted and not made to be completely boring, girl power is in and so is goofy shit, fantastical shit, 80s esque shit, capeshit, blah blah....if they would have played up the whole Jem aspect of things and maybe even treated it in a more super hero fashion than it ever was and actually put money into you know, letting people know a movie about this practically dead brand was out there, I think it could have been a moderate hit/popcorn flick for little girls

I feel like Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks was somehow closer to what would work as a modern Jem movie for kids, rather than this which was basically a Disney TV movie that would have probably been considered too bland even for that

There's a time and place to introduce the Misfits. They should have followed the show's example and done so within the first 15 minutes of the movie. Instead, they blew it and went with something nobody wanted to see.
>>
>>91183846
No. The whole thing was a poorly-conceived trainwreck, and the best thing for the entire franchise would be if it returned to forgotten obscurity for another decade before some brave soul (hopefully with better sense) tries again. Burn down the current comics, too.
>>
>>91183846

Not really. There was no way to capture the show’s campiness in a live-action film without leaning way into it, and no one was going to watch a film like that.

Read the comics instead. Sooooooooo much fucking better.
>>
>>91184226
I disagree desu, I feel like right now is the perfect time to capitalize on any kind of camp or craziness, the bubble is gonna burst soon and we'll be back in another grimdark stage soon enough

Hell, I would argue the only way for it to work would be to make it more campy and silly than the original show was, which could be pretty damn melodramatic and sort of depressing at times, by today's standards anyway, remember we're in an age where people consider Man of Steel the epitome of darkness
>>
>>91184226
Better than the movie, sure, most things are. But better than the original series, I wouldn't go that far. The comic decided to make some really off-putting design choices.
>>
>>91184281

>Better than the movie, sure, most things are. But better than the original series, I wouldn't go that far.

Well, that's your opinion. Others may disagree.

I am agnostic on the issue, not having been a huge fan of the original show or anything. Movie still sucked ass no matter what, though.

I was enough of a fan of the original to buy the complete box set and watch every single episode. So I'm going to favor the old version while looking at the new style with some level of what-is-this-I-don't-even dismay.
>>
>>91184343

Well, it is set in "modern" times rather than the '80s, so some level of cultural disconnect was always going to be present. But it's still a fun comic.
>>
>>91184343
I'm a fan of the original show and have issues with the comic, but none of the ones you'd likely expect. I think the comic is fine and like the other anon said "fun" at the very least.

Most of the people I see who outright hate it tend to hate it for political/lifestyle reasons, which is stupid. I'm the farthest thing from an SJW but if a comic entertains me I'm not going to get mad about lesbians or fatties

And since when does any franchise like this retain the style of the original anyway, IDW TMNT looks nothing like the original, nor does any iteration of it since then....same as Transformers, and a lot of other shit that basically just gets rebooted continually
>>
>>91184356
They changed what Jem was and now what I'm with isn't Jem and what's Jem seems weird and scary to me.
>>
>>91183846
That name will never not bug me.

If anyone's interested, the artist on the right did a porn comic. She apparently has a thing for representing as many fucking demographics as humanly possible for no fucking reason other than that she can.

somehow not surprising
>>
>>91183846
>tfw no Misfits movie with Kesha
>>
>>91184343
I just hate the comic because their is no way an all female band would have a fat member
>>
>>91185265
Green Arrow is drawn by the guy who did Innocent DickGirls, if you want to know.
>>
>>91184151
Had it not been a last minute rehash of another script with Jem copy and pasted in while also ignoring the creator entirely.

Yea maybe it could have worked.

I've still got a better revival script worked out than anything else I've seen.

Jem is a band of girls you want to none like any girl rock band not that one hit wonder
>>
>>91183846
> neo 80s is a popular style
> perfect time to do a reboot of jem
> release a movie made with the hollywood equivalent of what you had in your wallet & the plot of jose & the pussycats but played entirely straight with the cherry on top being holding the villains ransom for a sequel
> make a decent comic that wrote themselves into a corner by rushing everything and killed it's momentum by turning the holograms into deviantart OCs and replaceing pizzazz with a tranny
> movie bombs so hard that any chance for a revival is shattered
> and just as the comic recovers from the deviantart jem arc it gets cancelled

i honestly hope someone at hasbro got fired for fucking up this badly
>>
>>91185958
>>91186322
There is no way a record company producer would let the band keep their fat member. Especially not when their who thing is model based glam rock.
>>
>>91188947
I think this would have worked in 2002 or something. When 80's nostalgia driven media was fucking huge.
>>
>>91184343
making them a couple was the worst thing that happened in the comic.

it was rushed and ultimately wrote themselves into a corner.

Girl bands hardly exist to begin with if you want to be realistic, man, how many notable ones can you name?

Heart, Vixen, Kittie...I can't name many others
Unless you wanna go outside the realm of rock, in which case my example wasn't exempt from being one and also it doesn't even matter cause Jems music was like bubblegum pop in the show
>>
>>91189102
Yea, but bands hardly exist in the first place. I'm not really seeing how a Jem movie can work any longer
>>
>>91189122

We have girl groups like Fifth Harmony and some one irrelevant flops.

I think you can safely divorce the band from "modern music set ups" like how josie did.

Why not make it a sci fi space romp ala Guardians. The tech becomes more important, the band portion can also work as a space crew, and you can base a story very well on the concept of planet to planet touring.
>>
>>91189122
Meh, My Little Pony did it in 2014 or so and it's still the most popular iteration of that version of the particular brand

Being outdated in any way isn't Jem's problem, in fact it had that going for it, all things 80s and early 90s have seen huge success these days, it was everything else with the movie that caused it to fail.

Hell, pic related was great, rock n roll is cool to kids because it can be marketed to them unlike hip hop and its cool to their parents too, and these days fun and camp and anything involving pizzazz (no pun intended) and such is bound to be a hit if done right

I liked them for the whole like 60 seconds of screen time they had, it was the one part of the movie that really felt like Jem shit...I almost feel like better things were planned but they were using this movie as the boring set up
>>
>>91183846
They should have done a found footage First person Misfits movie, about Pizzazz finding out about the Jem movie and trying to make her own.
Full of messups and shinanigans and a strange background plot that has the Misfits stumble upon some criminal organizations and more shenanigans ending with them saving the day
And the Pizzazz enjoys glory and praise ... For 5 minutes before Josie and the Pussycats are sent into space getting all the attention.
And so Pizzazz tries to go to space too and it's "here we go again" ending.
