With various states of dress, ending up naked every other day and having to get her clothes back or have the fans design a new outfit.

When it slowed to an absolute crawl and became apparent that the characters had inconsistent voices/characterization, for me. So chapter 3.

The first chapter was well paced and introduced a lot of exposition without sacrificing the chance to establish core characters. The second did a bit less, as if it was moving out of that, and had a cute little tourney as a nod to the author's influences and a way to introduce how action plays out in the comic before creating situations that would advance the plot too quickly.

And the third chapter is even slower than chapter 1, new plot elements continued to be dumped en masse, character introductions took the place of meaningful character development or introspection (or even just plot progression), fight scenes after Boris tended to be more scarce than the previous chapter implied AND became slower while also being harder to follow due to his composition and coloring choices, and to top it all off the author revealed that he did such a bad job planning his comic that he needed to back up and create a new, intervening chapter to include MORE exposition.

It's a mess, which is a shame because it had a strong start and the artist has improved cobsiderably since he started. He's too focused on trying to cram in everything he wants to include to write a satisfying story.

I liked Gunnerkrigg a lot at the start when it was a bunch of kids exploring mythology, having adventures with robots and growing up. It was never amazing but it was a really solid webcomic, especially at the time.

Ever since like, mid-book 4, it's been waning off though. Tom's been focusing more on Annie's depression, the human conflicts, and action sequences, and frankly he's not great at any of that. Some of the most likable characters like Reynard and Eglamore have fallen off the map entirely.

Robot will get like one chapter per book, and Kat has stuck around even if she feels less like a second protagonist and more like a supporting character these days. Shadow basically doesn't appear anymore, Jones doesn't appear anymore, Coyote and Ysengrin are more in the background these days (though the current chapter might change that), Eglamore wasn't even given a chance to react to Tony's arrival, Zimmy and Gamma haven't gotten a dedicated chapter in years, he just wrote the fairies out of the comic now that they stopped being useful, Reynardine exists as a plot device. Tom's incapable of focusing on all of his subplots at once now that the story is starting to hit major turning points, so anything that doesn't play into them is sidelined. I get the impression he didn't really think ahead with how he'd balance all the plot threads and characters moving forward.

We saw the same thing happen with Mort a little while back. He vanished for years, suddenly came back with a big goodbye chapter, and it was hard to give a shit because he already lost his presence in the comic ages before that happened. It's a shame because all the mysteries and the memorable cast were very much the comics initial appeal.

Eh, the problems were present since the beginning, and the advice was given to him he could really benefit from talking with someone who would act like an actual editor to help him cut the crap. As far as I know, that never happened, and now the comic exists, high enough quality to keep its own, but still clearly flawed in the one area he seems to be weak at: story composition.
