Lapis has never really bonded with any of the CGs individually like Peridot has. There's an unspoken and uncomfortable tension between her and the Crystal Gems, but (like her other mental issues) she's trying to downplay it for Steven's sake.

Lapis Lazuli seems tranquil on the surface, but she can only ignore her issues for so long. Things are going to come to a head once something happens to shake up the status quo, like if Steven finds out that Lapis was on Earth to help destroy the environment and the Crystal Gems targeted her deliberately to stop her, after she refused a request to join them.

Sugar will make extra seasons for this reason solely. Though to be honest, SU has always had terrible pacing; it's just more noticeable now that we can binge watch seasons 1 and 2.

The plot and monster of the week episodes usually more than make up for it though (steven going to space was great), while the townie filler is lackluster when it doesn't involve monsters (which are now extremely rare). I like to call this the X files effect
