Who says she's supposed to sound cutesy? She's also supposed to be weird and the show has heavy coming-of-age things-- both of which a lower voice works well to convey.

The voice being low makes her sound like an actual teenager (it'd be easy to think she was like 10 with a higher voice because of the art style), and could get annoying if it was higher or screechy. High-schoolers generally don't sound like animu characters in real life.

Also even if they'd gotten someone Star's age to voice her for the early episodes, by now she'd be an adult and her voice could've changed a bit anyway. Or would you prefer if she was just Tara Strong?

Though I don't really think expecting a character to sound a certain way because of their appearance always works for human characters. If she sounded like an actual man or a 5-year-old, that'd obviously be wrong.

But if someone thinks she sounds "cringy" or like an anime fan trying to be cute... why couldn't she look that way but also sound like that? To me using a primarily live-action actress makes her sound much more realistic than a character like her easily could.

There are no words that depend on your tone in japanese but natural speech has tonal inflection when speaking in japan.
When you hear robots in japanese animes or video games speaking japanese there is no tonal inflection and you can still understand what they are saying and what they mean but there is a reason why they use katakana in speech bubbles to distinguish that they are talking monotone.

Voice acting is a strange thing. People who are good at it can change their voice completely with a little concentration.
I've had a bit of fiddling about with voice acting a few years back. And considering how much I managed to change my voice with no prep time I imagine professional voice actors, with half an hour of preparation can pull off some mindbogglingly differently sounding shit.

But what makes a really good voice actor imo is how well they convey emotion. Now THAT'S hard to do.
And it's always disheartening seeing amateur voice actors failing horribly at conveying emotion, and even not understanding why you don't like their voice acting.

It's nothing that ever went over the edge but it did get damn close a couple of times.
The strongest memory I have, I don't even know how to describe. There was touching involved. I don't even remember what it was about or what I thought of it. I just didn't understand why she wanted me to at the time and there's no way I'd remember if she did explain to me why she wanted to.

Another re-occurring thing is her asking for my approval of her nude body far more often than was appropriate. At first I just didn't give a shit, what did I know, I was a kid. And later, either she knew exactly when to stop or something changed her mind. But I don't have any more recent memories, when it would have actually mattered to me.

She does still make it a point to talk about our sexual lives though.

I should probably point out that my sister is in fact 5 years older than I am.

Most of these Japanese voice actress strain their throats trying to sound ultra high pitched. Listen to actual young Japanese women and teens, or the kids. None of them have loli voices, it's all fake. Chihiro from Spirited Away was voiced by a real 13 year old girl, and that's a natural voice of how Japanese young girls actually sound like.
Besides, the kawaii uuguu voices you like so much are retarded and hurt normal people's ears.
