Why don't the humans in this show care about anything? Why are they so frustratingly stupid? Why is it that nobody in this show acts rational at all? All this freaky shit happens and they don't seem to care or look for a way to prevent it. Why haven't they at least tried to do something to fight against rock monsters instead of just letting the Crystal Gems take care of it? Do they even know the Crystal Gems? Have they even tried talking to them about the rock monsters?
>>
>>91132304
At least there won't be a shitty le imcompetent CIA agents try to track down the Crystal gems episode
>>
>>91132320
But it would at least be some sort of attempt. Not a single person on this show acts like a rational human being. It's amazing.
>>
>>91132320
I'll be honest, incompetent government agents trying to deal with magical bullshit actually sounds at least worth a few chuckles. Shame that it A. didn't happen, and B. Sugar and Company would have certainly fucked it up if it did happen, though
>>
>>91132304
All this magical shit is boring to them because it existed longer than their society has
>>
it's the biggest suspension-of-disbelief breaking element of the show, but still sort of forgivable if you're willing to read a fair amount into the nature of the world. eg. it hasn't been explicitly stated, but the history of the Gem War and the presence of Gem Fauna on the planet being a well known and accepted fact of life by humanity (not just Greg). there is some evidence for it eg. Mrs. Maheswaran reacting with apparent knowing comprehension when she has the gem mutants explained to her, gems on the currency, books in the library about it.

also, it's never come up yet, but common firearms would most likely insta-poof most gem forms, and shatter gems, so their lack of constant terror at their broad circumstance (living in a world riddled with corrupted gem monsters) may not be entirely irrational.
>>
>>91132304
According to Sugar, the History of this Earth was infinitely less turbulent than ours. Which would explain why most of its people are dull-witted.

>Tell me about Steven, why does he wear the gem?
>>
>>91132304
Also there is the fact Rock Monsters don't attack human society, they are basically wild animals that live in places far from human habitation.

The only reason so many appear around the Beach City is because they are attracted to the temple and the presence of other gems specifically, the presence of humans is pretty much inconsequential.

You notice the Frankenstein gem was pretty passive when the doctor woman was examining it? Only freaked out and got grabby when another gem appeared.
>>
>>91132304
The existence of Gems are more of an 'au where civilisation has normalised gems' than a 'canon universe where we all resent gems and kill them'
>>
>>91132304
Yeah, seriously. There was a fucking alien war on Earth during the bronze age and some major geographical changes that may or may not be connected, but it seems to have done fuck all except change the names of some of the United States and make the Canadian flag even shittier than normal.
>>
>>91132535
It also prevented WW2
>>
>>91132414
corrupted gems are different from gem mutants. gem mutants 100% canonically seek out other gems, but corrupted gems seem to mostly just act like random xeno fauna (with some possibly more-sapient exceptions, eg. the beetles). and then there are unique gem-powered artifacts like Lapis' Mirror and The Desert Glass.
>>
>>91132544
And yet technological progress continued as if the large push for technological advancement caused by a massive world-wide conflict still happened.

This kind of bugs me, but given that the gems house predates the town I assume it is one of those weird things all the town folk are use to given it has been that way for as long as anyone can remember.

That said it would still stand that new people from out of town would have some more notable reaction of some kind.

I would expect a FBI guy keeping tabs on them or something, but not sure how big of a deal that would be given the "aliens" haven't done anything of note in two centuries, so at some point the agency would lose interest. But there would still be plenty of reason to freak-out with those corrupted gem monsters.

Speaking of which whatever happened to those monsters of the week, did they finally capture them all? I mean they have been hunting them for thousands of years and there is a finite number of them, so at some point that should be taken care of.

But honestly I find Onion to be a far more strange and disrupting element then the flat townsfolk reactions.

Why do I have a feeling we'll also learn that World War 1 and 2 in the Earth of the SU-verse never happened?

Because of some reason in which "Rose did something goody-two-shoes that prevented Archduke Ferdinand from being killed and Germany becoming a Nazi Germany."

We won't because Earth has no relevence besides being a plot device and a place where gems had a war once.

This show had so much potential for so long and now it just hurts. Steven Universe season 1 was really excellent and seemed to know what it was doing and how to convey it's message. "Love Letters" marks the point in the show where things slowing began to take a turn for the worse, which was only cemented by "Sworn to the Sword."

Steven Universe really gets under my skin because it was a show that I really enjoyed and looked forward to watching, and now the vision for the show that I fell in love with is gone. It sucks.
>>
>>91134093

Pearl got taken out by a fucking training program it literally just pokes through her body and she poofs back into her gem.

But ok fine it was a magic space tech sword thing. There is shit loads of gem stuff just littering the earth any government and army would be swarming all over that shit learning about it and potentially making weapons to fight gems. But aparantly not because nobody knows gems exist or what they even are?

>>91132387

Its weird their is gem fauna and flora stuff all over the place but humans have no idea what the fuck it is. Most of the time its like they have never seen it before.

WHAT NEW PEOPLE FROM OUT OF TOWN.

They talk like its a small beach community that runs basically off tourist dollars in the summer and spring but we never ever see this shit. Its literally like the Beach City is completely disconnected from the rest of America.
>>

there's plenty of flora and fauna that we only know exist because we've managed to find a scarce handful of specimens.
>>
>>91134563
Corrupted gems are all unique bizarro creatures of extreme rarity, and the crystal gems take them away as soon as making contact. The average person will likely not know what the fuck they're looking at, and no one has much opportunity to study it

Humanity would be all over the temples and artifacts though. Kindergarten would be made into a damn tourist trap without 24hr CG survelliance

The show is just frustrating it's world is so inconsistent and weird and the humans have to be incredibly stupid for the show to work. So this tourist town that people visit nobody is filming the magic gem aliens fight things ON THE DAM BEACH. No Tourists, No locals nobody is filming the weird shit that happens and putting it on youtube. How about the multiple times very large objects come from space and would easily be tracked by any type of space program, observatory or PERSON LOOKING UP AT THE GIANT FUCKING THING IN THE SKY from a town over. How about giant bodies of water like the ocean being turned into a giant pillar that reaches incredibly high into the sky thats not noticed either.

Lets just assume that the Government doesn't know of any Gem ruins or anything. enough weird shit happens the place should constantly be swarming with scientists or government agents to work out why ufos are constantly entering here.

No, but they ARE pretty much small rocks. An ordinary rock damn near shattered Amethyst, and that was just a simple fall onto it - relative speed probably wasn't more than 25 or 30 m/s.
Even if a bullet can't poof a Gem, it sure as hell can shatter one, probably better than Bismuth's shatterer thing.

Pic unrelated.

given the way there hard light body reacts to physical forces I would guess that bullets would have little effect on them. However their gem core behaves just like a typical gem so bullets would be a very real threat if it hits them there.

If they can hid their gem inside their hard light body this could offer significant protection from such attacks, or at least make it a lot harder to hit, but I haven't seen this ever done.

Given this I would see the gems posing and above average threat level compared to a person, but nothing a small team of trained soldier couldn't handle with basic Intel.

* can't see the gem to shoot it directly, bust out a few close range high shrapnel claymores and statistcally that gems going to get shattered.

Yea, forgot about that.
If that were the case then a few bullet would poof them and then you shoot the exposed gem to finish the job. Need to be a good shot, but there are plenty of people who could do it.

However given the physics of hard light that is not how it should work in the real world. Of course one would need to declare the photonic force value multiplier to have proper reference, too low and they would be like ghost barely able to move things too high and their bodies would be tougher then stone (which >>91135564 shows, but >>91135523 disproves)

>>91135597
no, that not how it worked. However the FTL space flight shows their forms can pass solid barriers. So they could just put their gem inside an armored box that they hide inside their body, then increase the hard light photonic force value multiplier as high as they can. At which point their only major weakness is doubled armored, hidden in their body and likely moving in a random pattern. That would make it darn near impossible to kill them without resorting to very heavy ordinance. Not nuke level, but you'd still might need to call in an airstike to get it done. Personnel explosive options may or may not be enough depending on how hard that armor is.

Then again swords seem to hurt them.

This, unlike Tolkien(I know he's not the standard level), sugah has never truly expanded on the how, what, and why's of her fictional world, and just proposed her idea, and even then barely added anything after it got picked up.
>>
>>91136281
Well I would assume so given that it is related to their transformation ability.

I may be something as simple as increasing the photonic force value multiplier takes more energy, which it does in real life. So they don't max it out all the time as it takes effort or something.

In which case they should be ability to make significant potions of their body intangible. Excluding their gem of course.

However they don't eat or sleep so I wonder what dictates their power limits given they seem to have no input.
>>
>Gems have always been around so they don't care
But every time a monster or gem related thing happens around them, they look surprised at first like they've never seen it before, like in Fusion Cuisine, but then they quickly stop giving a fuck. Also Ronaldo was finding real evidence that gem shit was aliums but the second any of it was connected to the gems his brain would drop his interest in it like a hot potato

It's like Ronaldo's pamphlet said - brainwashing minerals in the water.

I also think how Greg started to adjust to the Zoo's routines so happily, and how he forget what he and Steven were going to do and instead tried going to sleep, was evidence of some high potency brainwashing stuff in the Zoo's food and water. Also the fact that the Zoo humans themselves were so happy - I know they were raised there for thousands of years but it's like a basic biological urge for animals to want change and stimulation. People would be very depressed if they lived their lives doing the same things every day in a small unchanging space.

Also why Steven never asks follow-up questions or how Connie adjusted so easily. They're more interested than the average humans since they get to see and learn so much, but they're still too casual about it all to be believable in my opinion

Not that anon, but that is beside the point.

Real humans struggle with emotions and rationality everyday, if anything it would deepen the character arcs extremely in the show.

But all it needs is some tongue in cheek pointing to its own flaws, and that would be enough to make it more logical and relateable. And it could even bring some exposition to its lore.

So the plot for this show is:

An advanced intergalactic alien civilization somehow lose a civil war on one of its colonies which was on planet Earth lead by a lunatic called Rose Quartz who was also a high ranking official of the overseer of the colony Pink Diamond, and they used a weapon that made the remaining gems become primal wild animals that destroy shit, and there were only four survivors.

These four survivors now work to cage all the gem-kin and THEN WHAT?

Now one of the aliens has come to earth to activate a superweapon that will destroy the planet, gets moralfagged into submission and is now a member of the main team.

What?

How the shit can an intergalactic civilization as an enemy even work in a setting where the heros dont live in an intergalactic civilization?

Also does Sucrose have any idea how many gems should exist if they have intergalactic territory?

I mean this antagonist is unbeatable really.

Gems have pretty consistently shown to be weak to piercing/slashing attacks and constriction, but resistant to blunt force. The only time we've seen a gem poofed from blunt force is Amethyst, whom was popped by Jasper's headbutt in mid-air, and Lapis, but that might just be a non-accurate representation of events.

Hopefully later it'll get better writers and a more mature air to it that isn't riddled with "muh crying" and horrible pacing.

I wouldn't mind some kind of universal war mosh pit. With a number of lesser factions to the diamonds facing off for control. Each with their own principles and morals. Could still kinda fit into that Steven Universe mold. Have gem splinter factions and maybe some kind of federation for organic beings that resists non-organic/genocidal tyranny.

Checked.

Sugahritus should have written some extensive lore beforehand, worked that out in at least the bases, and leave enough room for change, say for plotlines etc.

They did the same with Gravity Balls, write the lore and characters first(Basic guidelines that rule out certain changes, like how Dipper and Mabel, no matter how angry, will always love each other as borhter and sister etc.) out beforehand, and then continue with the plotlines.

Great Idea, but got rushed too much before any lore foundation was actually build out.
>>
>>91139665
Yeah, but this this mythos really does need to some expansion into the untold parts of it's lore. It's really annoying to have a character vaguely mention something and for us to not have any indication and get barely any insight into it later.

Wonder who we can blame this on exactly.
>>
>>91139665
Bibles are pretty typical for shows, so I doubt there isn't one. It is far more likely that the crew view a lot of the information as unnecessary. Alternatively what we are getting is the actual lore outlined in the bible and Sugar just sucks at her job.

Sugar, either she hasn't written enough for the others to work with, or she isn't able to put her foot down on certain points of her lore, when other people start arguing about it with her.

There was a writer who got fired for stealth forcing a ship(and other reasons too probs) into the stories, with sugulita's characters nonetheless, so I wouldn't put the idea next to me, that she is somewhat of a pushover, or far too nice for her own good.

I think she is either not stern enough to drive her lore as intended through, or she simply didn't flesh out enough before it got hooked for production.

Either way it's either some serious teasing that is edging on getting the show cancelled before a proper ending, or she really is far too casual with her lore.

Sugar is basically an irl Sapphi.

Exactly, perhaps they can get the writers of current and future shows, to consult from time to time with the older more experienced generation, about what they think the show could use, and then just get creative and ask for some feedback before they belt it all to the production cycle.

>>91140225
Thank you.
>>
>>91140486
Presumably she picked up a lot of her bad habits from Pendleton Ward while she was on AT, so it isn't that she didn't get the wisdom of the "experienced generation", but rather that she got the wrong wisdom. SU is a show that is heavily reliant on world building, inter-character drama and really long form storytelling. While AT did one of those reasonably well it failed at the other two. This is why I suggested Weisman would have been a good fit. His shows all feature those elements and are all regarded fairly well, with Young Justice being the weakest and even then it is still a good show.
>>
>>91132304
The rock monsters have been around for thousands of years. There's been weird shit happening since around the time humans started to form cities and invent writing. Pearl thinks a lot of humans are still hunter-gatherers.

Expecting them to react to gem shit is kinda like expecting irl people to go apeshit over the pyramids or the ebin old temples around the Middle East.

It's stuff that's always been there and that's always kept happening since before mankind's collective, written memory.

It's hilarious how many people seem to expect the humans in SU to react as if the gems just showed up a week ago. Did you not see the altered world map? It's a different world, shaped by the presence of the gems.

I hope they can get out of this mudpit before the show gets cancelled.

Seeing how that ruby stole her ship back, it could pave a way to a good story arc involving homeworld(Even the antagonists base of origin's name sounds like just a working title).

My idea would be that the show gives the characters a reality check when they encounter white diamond, as in that crying and care-bear stares aren't enough to resolve the feud.

And explain how homeworld actually lost against a small army.

The problem is the human characters in SU seem to know jack-shit about the gems and don't seem to care even when new shit happens. Homeworld doesn't seem to have much of a tech advantage and for a caste based society the promises of freedom and equality are quite attractive. Additionally Rose was pretty goddamned broken and the war shut off production of their new and better Quartz soldiers.

I agree with the latter parts, but their technology is extremely advanced though, they literally give their grunts a space warping starship, to go and collect a single quartz soldier, that is as well colour coded to their specific gem-caste.

And it's indeed likely that the other gems did see their chance to escape their homeworld, and start a new free one on Earth with the others, and with the humans.
And that their numbers was far too high for them all to be protected by rose's bubble.

But that doesn't explain why she was the only rose quartz soldier on Earth.

See, there is so much potential for lore and world-building with this series, I really hope we will get more insights on the entire system and origin of the Gems, and what happened when Pink diamond got her first colony on Earth.

it was easier at the time to explain to Steven in simpler terms. cracked and shattered gems who cannot maintain a solid form/singular consciousness may as well be dead. Not sure what was going to happen to Amy with her crack, but Lapis was able to stabilize to an extent.

Amethyst getting shattered wouldn't have been as a big a deal if the show wasn't dishonest about them not actually being able to die.

That sounds horrible, even if she isn't being "bullied", she would still find it hard to express herself, or to assert herself at any time.

Kinda explains her thesis: Singles, and why it is so deeply able to portray grief.

It is by far, one of the few animated shorts that actually stuck the moment I had watched them.

If this turns out to be an actual twist in the show and the gems were just playing gods, it would redeem a lot of the stupidity of the townies. It would be like the apes playing dumb in Planet of the Apes because they know the truth is damning and futile.

Hell, it even lines up with Biblical creationism, and several gems already exhibit obvious qualities of religious and mythical figures.

>mfw the gems, especially Rose, experimented with organic life and created humans, in their image, to create the one ability they were lacking -- "the ability to grow and change outside of their intended purpose."
>mfw the melting of glaciers caused "Noah's arc", which was just gems trying to preserve their zoo.
>mfw humans witnessing Opal's fusion inspired the Hindu idea that god takes many single forms, and created the imagery for Shiva.
>mfw Lapis Lazuli's intervention in history led her to be seen as Moses, as well as many other gems in general being various belief figures.

In my opinion she would be a bad writer in the sense that the emotions are too big and don't have enough natural build-up prior to the outburst to warrent the size, however, the execution of said outbursts(visualy, but also the VA, and music styles are well chosen) and the handling afterwards, show that with the right direction, she can crystallise her ideas in a beautiful presentation.
Thus rather the first than the latter.

She just needs not to tone down the sadness, but rather showcase why it happens in the first place, take an arc for the build up, and let the ending be the release, but make it feel human all the way through.

I'm inclined to believe Lapis is a unique case. For some reason Amy did not retreat to her gem. Amy's symptoms were her physical form degrading, but her gemstone did not worsen except that time she hit it again. Lapis presumably stayed in her cracked gem for thousands of years before reforming, so I'm thinking she stabilized.

There's just so much we don't know about the gem physiology/lore. It's really weird seeing people bitch about the writing as if the series has concluded.

The lighthouse is emitting a beam that makes humans ignore the gems, think of them as not weird. Its been going on for centuries. There is a significant amount of gem stuff and damage around. all untouched for thousands of years.

That's retarded, but at least its something

Although, it would be funny if the moment the lighthouse stops working everyone stops whatever they're doing, frozen in place for a second or 2 as they realise everything that has happen both in the city and the world, all the shit that they went through and didn't even thought about it, the monsters, the alien invation and what it implies and all the times they almost die due to what the gems caused here

And, after a short ominous silence, they all start screaming from the top of their lungs and start crying inconsolably, everybody is in hysterics and defeated on the ground as everything bad and out of place comes rushing back and everything makes sense in this collective moment of clarity

All of this in a worldwide scale, now they all know just how fucked they are

It would be great

I think another legit question any of us can ask about the humans we know in SU is:

Does Beach City ever have ANY emergency services, ESPECIALLY Law Enforcement?

Asides from wondering and questioning as to why Beach City is even considered a city, how would Beach City ever deal with a criminal situation? And I'm betting the Gems probably wouldn't interfere in a criminal-shootout situation because Garnet may actually make a good point or guess that they might end up causing more collateral damage if they interfere.

Hell never have I personally seen a patrol man or patrol car around doing any routinely patrols and such, and no visible cops around. No way would the concept of crime not exist in SU's Earth. Hell Beach City might aswell be an easy target for any heavily armed criminals looking for a quick score.

>Beach City does not have a supermarket, school, police station, or fire department

Don't forget a hospital or a medical center, even if Beach City is never really a city and its just a quirky name thought up by quirky beach bums in-universe. You'd think a small town meant to cater to tourists would have a fucking nearby medical center, hell it SHOULD BE imperative for Beach City to have a goddamn small medical center or even a dinky-ass clinic in case of oh I dunno? SOME TOURIST SCHMUCK FALLS OFF THE ROLLER COASTER FROM SMILEY'S AMUSEMENT PARK? Or some pregnant tourist suddenly breaks water and needs serious medical help?

And yeah, like anon said at >>91155689

With the lack of nearby law enforcement, some heavily armed criminals with a good getaway vehicle could practically pull off a perfect heist by robbing the retail establishments of Beach City dry, at gunpoint.

And its doubtful the people of Beach City own firearms or any weapons to defend themselves considering certain undertones.

So yes, three to four or five heavily armed men with kalashnikovs, body armor and lots of ammo could raid the town, loot the establishments and rob the few permanent inhabitants dry at gunpoint. And the Gems wouldn't be reliable in dealing such a situation since they might be out in a mission at such a time.
>>

You need to hit one tiny spot of a gem to "kill" it. Humans can be hit in lots of places and die. Gems would adjust.
>>

>>
>>91156530
Humans actually can survive a pretty decent amount of spots getting hit by guns. Also, a gem poofs given suitable damage to its hologram body, too. That means any suitable shot will incapacitate them. At best, one shot breaks a gem and kills it. At worst, two. One to get it to poof and another to break the stone.

Of all the potential this show had and wasted, Peridot's character arc hits me the hardest in its misdirection.

She had a perfect compromise regarding the cluster and Earth's resources. YD was such an obtuse stick in the mud trying to keep together a broken empire it would've been smart to consider something new and different.

In the end, it's still impressive she braved surviving a failed suicide mission and the loss and destruction of her tools and ship - in the face of hostiles, no less. The cluster arc's confusion was some bullshit too. Fuck that noise and fuck Steven.

Violent xenophobia has been nearly universal among human societies for most of humanity's existence. Lapis Lazuli is more powerful than every other gem seen to date combined, then multiplied by a million. Lapises are apparently made to terraform planets on their own, and from on-screen activity, they can do it pretty fast.
