This is a problem with cape movies I thought we all realized with Watchmen. Direct adaptions don't work because the page and the screen are different mediums that do different things great. You know if Sony is so desperate to kickstart their own Spidey universe, why not do something completely different and just go with a entire setting change with all those alt universe Spidey's, they could have been making a 2099 universe and it would have been fresh and different enough for people to welcome it while at the same time not intervering with the MCU movie

Pretty much the people actually in charge of the deal dropped the ball. Marvel wanted one, lots of people at sony wanted one. The people actively in charge at the time at sony wanted insane amounts of money and control. Marvel passed. Sony wanted disney money out of marvel, when marvels budget still largely comes from their own work. Once a deal was made did disney step in and offer more budget to civil war to make it an even bigger project.
