If I may play devil's adjudicator, people are just excited because the series is finally receiving its ending, and so far it's actually lived up to, and surpassed, their expectations.

I just don't understand the hatred of generals or calling them cancer not just about SJ but about everything. Even with generals, I think it's fair to have other stray threads about the same show, but I general prevents every stray thought about the last episode from starting a new threads resulting in 30 threads running all week most of the time. They usually make the discussion more coherent and also much easier to check on and archive stuff from when you're watching a show. I don't get the bitching about generals or needing to ban them during every short hiatus either. One thread is very fucking easy to ignore if you don't like a show even if it's up every day. Generals were originally made to contain posting for popular shows when they were on a break, so as to not clog up a board with redundant topics when there was little new to discuss. Before this, for 6 years, 4chan operated on the idea of a popular show just utterly spamming the catalog even while on a break. Even then, if someone thought of a genuinely interesting point of conversation, they could make a thread outside of a general. It wasn't until later that people decided that their shows or at that point other topics needed permanent generals up, and it wasn't until much later that /co/ got these unwritten rules that a show actually needed a general when it was airing. As such, 4chan operated for over a decade on the principal that a show could fill the catalog while it was airing, and while there were certainly some complaints at large they were ignored.

Unfortunately, the existence of generals has created a negative impetus here. People that don't like something now feel entitled to bitch and moan about it until it gets forced into a general. Recently, people have even started to whine about things in generals, seemingly in the hopes that these things would be utterly wiped off of a board. Furthermore, due to uneven treatment of various shows, people have begun to complain in generals themselves about other things not getting the same treatment, no matter the gap in quality or condition of the topic in question. On top of all of this, permanent generals form tight-net communities over time, rampant name/trip/avatar faggotry occurs within them before long, and they often getting so caught up in their own in jokes as to completely drop discussion, meaning that even looking at it from the perspective of people who want thing they don't like gone they still bring the quality of discussion down.

It is apparent that the solution is to globally ban generals. Their very existence promotes whining and bitching from every side. They bring down the quality of discussion in regards to their own topic and the board at large. They are now being made in direct opposition to their original purpose, and this is even being supported by staff here. They violate the very nature of 4chan by encouraging identities to form. Here's what I think: yes complaining constantly about popular things is stupid, but the double standards need to stop so people aren't resentful. I agree that you either need to ban generals and allow dozens of different threads for any show regardless of your feelings about it or you need to start a general for any show that starts to take over the board. But it's best to simply stick to one policy or the other. People get irritated because for some other shows janitors delete most of the threads that get made while other shows can dominate the board for weeks and it's arbitrary so a consistent rule one way or the other is good.

You know that "10+ types of /co/ posters" image that occasionally gets thrown around? There's a reason "venture bros fag" is on there. Back during season 4-ish, the show would get about the same number of threads as Jack's getting now. People whined and whined the whole time new episodes were airing, then the threads would quickly dissipate when new episodes stopped. There's a big difference between these kinds of shows and shows like Steven Universe where people STILL discuss them nonstop even when they don't have anything left to talk about and have to resort to dumping fanart.

This "we need a general for everything" mentality is cancer.
