According to Wikipedia, the first "major" Archie story is Love Showdown which was written in the 90s. Are all the Archie comics before that really worthless? Should I just read Love Showdown then move on to Waid's run?
>>91067177
Only read Afterlife and the Predator crossover. Everything else, including Waid's run, is worthless.

>Are all the Archie comics before that really worthless
are you always this much of a retard
>>91067541
This is how Marvel and DC teach people to read comics.
>>91067177
Love Showdown is a good story. It was the first multi-part Archie story, before that they were always 6 pagers that didn't really have any influence on the other. In the 90's there was a bit more continuity, but still nothing much. However, many stories before it are classics. Almost all of the 80's and prior stories are solid. If you want a good start, any Dan DeCarlo stuff is solid, an anon storytimed all the Betty & Veronica comics from the 1970's recently.
>>91067198
Afterlife is interesting. Predator and Sharknado etc. are just garbage that appeals to the shock factor. They aren't actually good, but /co/ is always pushing them as must-reads. It's more to see Archie characters out-of-character.
Haha the best Archie stuff was from way earlier. It used to be legit funny.

I said that they use Wikipedia to pick which comics to read, NOT that they read Wikipedia INSTEAD of reading comics. So your post about people being "not yet comic readers" makes no sense at all.
Or maybe you can tell me how people are "not yet comic readers" after they've already read some comics.
>>91067198
>Everything else, including Waid's run, is worthless
Waid's run was to kickoff the universe reboot, and it was shit, because it was also completely different in a tonal sense. It's like someone kidnapped a bunch of lookalikes from nowadays and told them to pretend they're the Archie cast if they ever want to go home. Except they know nothing about Archie.
Earlier Archie stories are pretty great. Anyone can pickup any of the digests and enjoy the stories. Regarding Love Showdown, it's just a self-contained arc and doesn't have an influence on the greater canon (which is really fucking loose anyway).

Skip the reboot, read anything from before, especially Dan DeCarlo's stuff (but pretty much anything up through the 80s is great). Archie gets Married is a great arc, as are most of the Life with Archie magazine arcs. Predator is great, Sharknado is worth a chuckle, and Afterlife is amazing, but the publisher stopped caring about sticking to a schedule for that one (it's supposed to be a monthly, but they've only put out 10 issues in the past 4 years or so).

Ehhhh... kiiiinda. They had the Betty Cooper, Betty Cooper storyline in the '70s that was a multi-issue thing as well as those absolutely bizarre comics like Faculty Funnies, Jughead's Diner, and Archie's RC Racers that had plots that extended across multiple issues.
Love Showdown was the first story that had a massive impact on the entire company though and that wasn't quietly swept under the rug when it was finished but it wasn't the first multi-part Archie story.
>>91068074
>Makes six servings
Right, Jug. Right.
>>91067177
I'd say the best stuff was late 50s to early 70s. Josie, Jughead, Archie and Betty & Veronica in particular. The sexiness was toned down after that but shit would continue to be slipped past the radar up through the mid 80s.
Best of DeCarlo and Lucey are good starting points for cute girls and good writing, Schwartz is great for Jughead and gags in general.

Archie screwed over Dan DeCarlo terribly in regards to ownership rights to "Josie & The Pussycats", the main character named and modeled after Dan's wife, Josie Dumont (deceased).
After Dan sued Archie, they ungratefully fired his ass after 50 years of faithful service. On December 11, 2001, Dan lost the court case. A week later, he passed away. Coincidence? I think not.

for the newfriends here, Dan established the Archie house style copied by everyone else that replaced original artist Bob Montana's (even Bob started copying it because he liked it better).
Also, while you'll occasionally see the name Mike DeCarlo in Archie credits (usually as an inker) and elsewhere, they're not related.
Dan did have twin sons who were poised to replace him in the industry but who sadly predeceased him due to illness.

Archie Meets the Punisher (written by Batton Lash, drawn by Stan Goldberg & John Buscema) is un-ironically the best inter-company crossover ever made.
There's a lot of good Archie stuff out there if you don't expect continuity. There was no such thing, or almost no such thing (once every few years something would be mentioned in more than one story).

I find Waid too fundamentalist about characterization.
I knew his run wouldn't be for me when he said he didn't want to write Betty and Veronica as both best friends and bitter rivals, because it's so inconsistent. But that's the whole fun of comedy! Characters can be friends in one story and trying to kill each other in another story. In a weird way it's more true to life than if everyone acts the same way all the time.

Buscema drew all the Punisher drawings and Goldberg did all the Archie drawings and the inker (Tom Palmer, I think) put them together.
So not only do the characters all look right instead of being forced into one company's style, they're all written in character. There are even touching moments about how Frank falls in love with the innocent world of Riverdale.
