If you’ve never watched Ren and Stimpy I want you to watch this sequence (no graphic grossouts) and consider the following things:

>The amount of effort that went into every frame of this animation
>The NIGHTMARISHLY realistic emotion in Ren’s voice acting
>The horrifying soundtrack and effects that make every moment as carefully unsettling as possible
>The fact that this aired on Nickelodeon
>The fact that the man who created this show, performed Ren, and directed this episode was such a merciless control freak and perfectionist that his staff was afraid of him and Nickelodeon fired him early in the series run
>That what I just said does not even fucking begin to describe the unbelievable drama that went on behind the scenes of this show
>Literally enough to fill a book.
Ren and Stimpy was by far one of the weirdest fucking phenomenon in television history and that isn’t even just because of its actual content. Holy shit.

This was always funny to me.

You clearly didn't grow up with an ... emotional father.

That's not even the most disturbing scene. Try the "and with these hands" one from Stimpy's Fan Club.

I didn't say this scene was the most disturbing because its not. It's just one of my favorites

This scene perfectly described my inner workings before I was even born.

My dad was big into Ren and Stimpy back in the day so I got to watch all his collected VHS tapes of the show. I liked it back then but love it now I'm much older. Didn't appreciate it enough back then.

I still remember the first time I ever saw this scene. It's by far my favorite scene from the whole show and it's kind of disappointing to know that the original studio had already been fired by the time it aired, and the show was already meeting its slow demise.

It was also very disappointing when APC came out and I thought John was going to restore the show to its former glory, only to make bullshit like Naked Beach Frenzy and whatever the hell else he's been doing since then. It's sad to know we never get anything like this again, but I'm grateful that it happened at all.

It's just an example of good artists make bad business. When he had money and corporate oversight it resulted in a lightning stroke that could only happen once. When given a free pass to do whatever he wanted it ended up being edgy garbage.

This was one of the few episodes where Kricfalusi's autism really was in full force. He was picky as fuck but it eventually got more and more lenient. Here this is him having 100% control, you can see that while impressive this is arguably the most technically impressive episode of the series and probably the most iconic scene in the series.

Don't quote me on this but I heard he had a philosophy of never letting hes animation team draw the same face twice and you can really see that in this

Ren and Stimpy is one of these things that, for the live of me, I don't get the appeal of.

I mean, I like the animation and the facial expressions and I find the artstyle very memorable. It's just, and maybe I'm just being autistic, that I don't think any of it is funny.

I agree with what Pan said in one of his videos.

>>
>>91054902
What are the sort of things that you do find funny, anon? Not all humor is for all people.
>>
>>91056826

More dialogue driven stuff, I guess. Old Simpsons. Also old Spongebob.

Hell, I sometimes even like dark and violent humor. Sure, a guy getting horribly injured can be hilarious, when it's set up well and it serves as a punchline. The black knight in Monty Python's Holy Grail getting chopped to pieces was funny. Dave from Kick-Ass struggling to get up again after being beaten to a pulp by a bunch of thugs, only to be hit by a car was funny.

Ren and Stimpy has the gross stuff and the bizarre images and the violence but I feel it's just kinda there rather than being set up in a way that has a cathartic pay-off. I mean, I get that it's probably supposed to be slapstick taken to it's logical extreme, or at least to the extreme that a childrens show would allow but... again, I just kinda don't think the setup is there to make it work.
>>
>>91057067
>More dialogue driven stuff, I guess.

That'd be the problem. Ren and Stimpy is very much emotional absurdism instead of logical witticisms. The whole point of the joke, the thing that makes it funny to the people who find it funny, is that there is no setup. Things happen, and they happen hard and unexpectedly, taking you by surprise. So changing that to add a set-up and payoff would ruin it for the people who the show's aimed towards right now.

Not that there's anything wrong with either kind of humor, in fact one of the things that really irritates me about John K. is that he's constantly whining and bitching and moaning about 'writers' because they don't have the kind of humor he does.
>>
john k strkes me as the type who'd sneer at the idea of setup-joke-punchline-payoff and instead spend three months agonizing over the way a single background character's shoelaces move

ren and stimpy was a lightning strike that rode the contemporary idea that cartoons could be mainstream while being counter-cultural and family-unfriendly. it's a product of its time just like max fleischer's work, whether it 'held up' is irrelevant compared to the trail it blazed. i'm high as hell
>>
>>91057202

I always felt the same way about him.

His attitude that cartoons are about the visuals and the visuals alone seems like kind of a creative dead-end to me. But again, that's me, someone who tends to not find visuals alone funny if the context isn't funny.
>>
>>91057341
>cartoons are about the visuals and the visuals alone
imagine a cartoon rodent dropping anvils on a cartoon feline's head, forever and ever and ever. that's what it must be like inside john k's brain

Pretty ironic considering that he and most of his students are for the most part, mediocre comedians and storytellers.
