It's a known artistic technique to present people with something that has an obvious facet they would want to change. That way when they tell you it needs to be changed and you acquiesce they become less inclined to complain, because they already got their opinion validated the first time.

In this case I think they removed the smoking and toned down on the devil actually being called satan.
