Yes, a later story made it so Batman called for someone to pick him up later, but the original intention is clear. Mike W. Barr was even worse in that regard, having Batman use thugs as human shields against bullets and fucking incinerating Ra's al Ghul with the Sun (he got better later somehow, but still). And of course, how can we ever forget the infamous Year Two.

Oddly enough I think this was DC's intention at the time, make Batman grittier and more violent. Probably thanks to DKR and its infamous "I believe you" scene.

I have to admit, when I first read this comic (was about 12 years old), it actually terrified me. Even during Morrison's JLA, the villains had some comedic elements and quirks, but here everyone was a psychotic, ruthless bastard. Simone went full Ennis here.

The Luthor we've seen through this entire series, the one who showed up everywhere else like a normal man leading the Society, that was VULu.

DC had them both running around acting completely differently but because characterization is so crap between writers, everyone wrote it off as DC editorial not knowing what they were doing. This was the first book that hinted that there were really two Luthors running around, before IC confirmed it. It was a big deal back in the day.
