well to be fair, for some reason people often crop the names off comics.

I don't know why, I don't think they honestly expect people to assume they made it. But they do it anyway.

If they're trying to make a living off their work, that would also hurt their income.

Or even worse when a website like 9gag puts their own watermark on other peoples content

I'm kinda split on it. Its shitty to remove watermarks and spread stuff around uncredited, but its also often easy to find the source anyways. Places like knowyourmeme seem pointless but at least they keep a record of sources. I think it should just be encouraged to respond w/ source when you find something cropped and uncredited. I've found myself credited for stuff via my statcounter that way before (I don't sign/watermark almost anything) and it usually leads to a good amount of pageviews as memesters thumb through the rest of my work. Are they looking for more exploitables to harvest memes from? I hope so, because the attention is good.

I don't think it's so much to do with credit as it is just controlling where it gets published.

I sure remember being surprised when somebody uploaded my comic to ehentai.
