>EXCLUSIVE: Mary Jane is Super on Marvel Comics Variant Covers

>Face it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot.

>In June, Mary Jane Watson takes over Marvel Comics’ slate of releases, as she’s the featured character for the publisher’s variant cover theme for the month, celebrating the debut of the all-new “Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man” series. Today, CBR has the first look at a trinity of MJ’s covers, reimagining the core Spider-Man cast member as a trio of other heroes.

Between this push and Slott trying too hard to convince people that the marriage is not coming back, something is up, isn't there?

they do but she has a sizable fanbase so turning her into her own superhero would be an easier way of divorcing her from the Spider-Man books since making her Iron Man's girlfriend failed miserably

they're just spitballing mash up characters to a wall since their would be no issues with movie rights as if they gave MJ powers and a original look or did a mundane MJ book those could be used by Sony.

Stop it. Just stop. They won't undo it and everytime I see something like this, I crack such a genuine smile and feel really good.

And then it never happens. And then MJ ends up cucking. Or she says she used up all the love she has left for Pete. And then I get sad again. My poor heart can't take it.

Slott is an autismo master troll. I wouldn't put it past him to have a wedding for MJ. It just won't involve Peter.

Not really, Gwen isn't around Peter in any way that MJ is likely to threaten. As no Gwen has a shot at Peter the only risk is MJ as Scarlet Spider getting equal billing with Spider-Gwen (and as she could give a sales boost and save the book most of them will probably be happy). Gwen Poole has no reason to fear MJ.

Haha, yes.
>>
>>90899103

What about her? She was awful.
She never felt like she belonged. An intruder in a story with no room for her.

Gwen and Peter had a good dynamic.
Felicia and Peter have a good dynamic...At least they did before Slott assassinated her character and undid decades of character development faster than you could say "The die has been cast"
And Peter and MJ had the best dynamic. Peter and Mary Jane are the Superman and Lois Lane of the Marvel universe.

When they're not together, it just feels wrong. Something is always missing from that hero's life and it leaves the reader with this empty feeling, like they're not quite reading a Spider-Man or Superman comic.

Not even Wonder Woman could counter that feeling of emptiness with Superman, and she actually matters. You think some nobody made up on the spot like Carlie Cooper is going to do that for Spider-Man?
Fuck no.

No, it's a High School AU where MJ has romantic troubles, first with Harry Osborn, then with Spider Man, then Peter Parker. Spidey is a supporting character, as is Peter, though the narrative doesn't act like it knows they're the same person (because it's from MJ's perspective). So it's a teen romantic drama with manga style art. Really sweet, really excellent art.
>>
>>90905243

Why not? She looks good in anything. The only of these I'm not sold is SpiderGwen (and it might be just because of the art).

You know, I actually really liked Ms. Marvel Carol?
She could be a little preachy at times, but at the end of the day she felt like a real human being with flaws that you could relate to. I even had her on my harem grid.

Now she's a preachy SJW space cop that's barely recognizable as the Carol Danvers of old.
Yeah, Carol's old books tended to be a bit on the bland side.
But now they're bland AND she's an unbearable cunt with inconsistent hair that's bad more often than good.

He was probably going to do that after Superior, but Bendis borrowed her for Iron Man before that could happen. Apparently Chip Zradsky wants to use her for Spectacular Spider-Man when it launches, so Peter may have one love triangle in that book (MJ and Rebecca London) and a triangle in ASM (Mockingbird and Sable)

> Any happiness that is dependent upon another person is not a healthy kind of happiness.
Except this is completely wrong.

Human beings are social creatures first and foremost.
While it is true that happiness dependent on others can be incredibly toxic, it's also true that happiness dependent on others can also be incredibly beneficial. It's different on a case by case basis.

In fact, "You need to learn to be happy on your own" is one of the dumbest outlooks you can have. Very, very few humans are mentally and emotionally capable of being happy on their own for extended periods of time. They need the interaction from friends, family, and lovers in order to remain mentally and emotionally stable individuals.

Yes you dope.

The entire point of Spider-Man is how much he valued his family and they've been dying left and right. It's natural for him to have a longing to start over again with his own family.

Why Mary Jane though?

Because deep down, Peter wants to have a normal life. Spider-Man isn't Peter Parker, like Batman is to Bruce Wayne. Peter Parker is Spider-Man, and his human side is something that Peter values. So he can't get with Gwen, because she's dead and only liked him for ignoring her, can't get with Cat, since she doesn't respect Peter as Peter. Can't get with any other super powered person, because they'd off set the balance of Parker. Naturally the only one he'd be happy with is Mary Jane, who fell in love with Peter for Peter. Hell, if anything his Spider-Man side is what she hates the most about him, but she puts up with it because she loves him.

>>
>>90919952
You're not wrong. You're just working against 20 years of inertia. And that's just them married in canon; MJ was obviously in the book before that.

You could have Peter be with someone that isn't MJ and find happiness. The issue is that that character would essentially be an MJ clone. So why even bother creating a new character if she's just going to be a rehash?

Of course, ask if this is begging the question anyways. Marvel won't let Pete ever get to that point with any woman anymore unless the end of ASM is near.
>>
>>90920429
They could make a new character that isn't a clone. Theoretically. But then again Spider-Man writers do love their clones.

I don't see the issue of working against inertia. Only some of the older fans have a die hard allegiance to Mary Jane. She's not really relevant to Spider-Man anymore, aside from RYV. She isn't in the main comic, she wasn't in the ASM movies, and she isn't going to be in Homecoming. If it wasn't for Bendis seeing nobody had plans for her, she wouldn't have even been in Iron Man. So at this point I would say that Peter settling down with a clone is more likely than him actually settling down with MJ.
>>
>>90920715
She isn't relevant to ASM because they've been trying to bury her post OMD for precisely what you're trying to do: bring in a new, believable romance.

This isn't some case of older fans clamoring for a niche character. MJ is very much a core part of Spider-Man (and is pretty popular), considering the universe has never been rebooted. So Marvel is trying to create a generational wedge by burying her so that future readers will only remember her as one of the many in the carousel of Peter's love life. But the problem is, again, Spider-Man still begins at Amazing Fantasy #15, 1963. You can't undo all of the history she's in. It just doesn't work because it's easier than ever for any reader interested in Spidey to fill the entire character's catalogue, either via TPB or digital.
>>
>>90914189
I remember this. The result in the next page made Mary Jane look a lot like Julia Carpenter in her "Spider-Woman" phase.

>This isn't some case of older fans clamoring for a niche character
Sorry, but that's exactly what this is.

Mary Jane is not a core part of Spider-Man. She's just the core part of your favorite period. Marvel will succeed in burying her, because she isn't inherently important to his stories like you believe she is. Even at this point in time she is already considered to be "one of the many in the carousel of Peter's love life".

Marvel might not be able to undo all the history that Mary Jane is in, but you're making the assumption that people will actually care about that history. Even if they read it, I doubt they'll fall in love with Mary Jane because they won't be looking at her through nostalgia goggles and they'll much prefer whatever modern version of Spider-Man they were introduced to, and by extension whatever his love interest was at that point in time.

Mary Jane just isn't relevant anymore, and Marvel has no interest in making her relevant again. It's over.

It probably has something to do with the fact that the last time they did a bunch of variant covers for one of Peter's old girlfriends they all became wildly popular and spawned a new series.

If anything it just means they want to strike gold twice. I don't hate Mary Jane, but neither am I totally in love with her, so my take on this isn't influenced by any kind of bias. You shouldn't take it as a sign that they're resurrecting a dead relationship. She fucks off and does her own thing is what will happen, if anything happens.
>>
>>90921582
>>Mary Jane is not a core part of Spider-Man.
No, but she is a core part of Peter Parker's life.

They share more time together than all the other women together.

The problem has never been "remove MJ" as much as "they remove MJ in an incredibly stupid way that didn't even do what it was supposed to do, retcon away their time together"

The only way to do away with MJ would be giving Peter a new fixed love interest, but that would "age" him the same as being with MJ.

Which means no fixed love interest. Therefore, MJ remains the historically relevant love interest for Peter.
>>
>>90922166
>Therefore, MJ remains the historically relevant love interest for Peter.
Not really.

We're getting to the point where she won't even be the most well known one.

She's not a core part of anything except your favorite period.
>>
>>90921582
>and by extension whatever his love interest was at that point in time.

Oh yeah, all of those young readers are fucking praising Carlie Cooper and Silk all over the damn place.

I'd take all the shit you were saying more seriously if Spider-Man books haven't been dropping in sale numbers over the last decade, only spiking when Mary Jane is confirmed to be involved prior to the sale, or when Slott tries some gimmicky shit like superior.

And, speaking from personal experience as a LCS owner, most of these newer, younger comic readers?
They buy TPBs of older stories more than anything. When it comes to new stories most of them look towards Image and even Dynamite.
For God's sake, I've sold Maximum fucking Carnage of all things THREE times in the last month. Shit, this happened to me personally and even I have trouble accepting it. Every time it was a teenager.
I've had to mark down some of Slott's TPBs 75% and toss them in the bargain bin, and they still barely sell months later.

Marvel is going down the shitter fast, old fans don't like it. New readets don't like it. Every month the sales for both get worse.
Thank fucking Christ for Image Comics, or else I'd have gone out of business a year ago.

Marvel is losing old readers faster than they're getting new ones, at least in my store and the other stores I network with in the area.

Kids and teenagers use the internet for everything, and they're far less likely to impulse buy than most of us were at that age. If they see a horde of older readers panning a book in online reviews, they WILL avoid it.
>>
>>90922301
"Historically" means evaluating the WHOLE history(of the character, in this instance)-

>>90922342
>they're far less likely to impulse buy than most of us were at that age.
not really, but their "impulse buying" is downloading a pirate copy....
>>
>>90922342
I wasn't really talking about Carlie Cooper or Silk. I was speaking in a general sense about the future, most likely around the time when Spider-Man starts showing up more prominently in the movies.

Anecdotal evidence means nothing, by the way.
>>
>>90922397

Pirating isn't the same as impulse buying.
Pirating also means they won't lie to themselves into thinking something awful is good to justify the money theu wasted.
>>
>>90922397
I know what you meant.

Mary Jane isn't going to stand out in that history, except for maybe length. She's not special or integral.
>>
>>90922301
You mean the period with the lowest amount of readers that is infinitesimal compared to the amount exposed to mary jane as the main love interest instead? And that's why occasionally parading around MJ X Pete shipbait is one of their tactics for increasing sales?
>>
>>90922497
>, except for maybe length.
which is actually important...
>>
>>90922301
You serious?

EVERYONE has watched the OG Spiderman films and they all had great reception, even 3.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane is the same as Clark Kent and Lois Lane to most people.

The ONLY competition MJ has is Gwen and she hasn't had the greatest exposure recently
>>
>>90922301
>We're getting to the point where she won't even be the most well known one.

Where?

Gwen Stacy was used in ASM but the only real affect of that was having non-comics reading people know that she dies, and maybe the popularity of Spider-Gwen (which takes place in a universe where her Peter is dead). We still have no idea if MJ will be in Homecoming. And MJ was in USM even though they tried too hard to avoid having Peter have a love interest.

No one significantly cared about any of Spider-Man's new love interests in the comics post-OMD, (except maybe Carol whom they quickly decided not to put him in a relationship with with halfhearted excuses) in the last eight years as much as you believe them to. Anna Maria is more associated with Otto, Carlie no one really cares about no matter how hard they push her, and the only place I usually see Michelle and Norah mentioned is usually here and Marvel seems quite content to ignore them. Silk seems to be a better accepted character when she's away from Peter (and especially away from Slott). And they didn't bother putting Peter back together with either Black Cat or Betty Brant after OMD.

Then again this might be more of an indictment of the writing skills and editorial decision making rather than anything to do with Mary Jane.
>>
>>90922584
>And MJ was in USM even though they tried too hard to avoid having Peter have a love interest.

Also the USM I'm talking about here is the cartoon.
>>
>>90922609
Spectacular is the only Spiderman cartoon worth watching in the last 10 years
>>
>>90922449
>Anecdotal evidence means nothing, by the way.

It means nothing up until it starts showing up more often. And believe me, that anon's not the only one having that problem.
>>
>>90922673
>>It means nothing up until it starts showing up more often
then it's no more anecdotal
>>
>>90922497

If she isn't special or intergral, who the fuck is?
Because they'll never allow another love interest to hang around for more than two or three years just to avoid the MJ effect from happening again.

And at that point, who's even left to matter to Peter? Who is left for the reader to give a shit about? Aunt May?

A super hero is just as much defined by their love interests as they are themselves.

Mary Jane has become just as intergral to the indentity of Spider-Man as Lois Lane and Catwoman have to Superman and Batman.
People of all ages identify better with a protagonist when they have a small, higher quality pool of romantic interests than they do with a hero who has a larger pool of disposable nobodies.
>>
>>90922669
That's true, but I only bring it up because it was the only Spider-Man cartoon with new episodes in the last six years.

And Spectacular used a lot of Spider-Man's love interests including Mary Jane, at any rate.
>>
>>90922700
At least he has evidence. Saying

>We're getting to the point where she won't even be the most well known one.

is based on no evidence.
>>
>>90922571
Those movies aged like milk and didn't do Mary Jane justice at all. I like them, but let's not kid ourselves here.

>Peter Parker and Mary Jane is the same as Clark Kent and Lois Lane to most people.
An overhyped relationship that owes its popularity to waifufags? Sounds about right.
>>
>>90922702
>If she isn't special or intergral, who the fuck is?

Are you really expecting him to answer it? He can't answer because he hasn't even read the comics in the last seven years.
>>
>>90922770

You do realize that Superman and Lois is the go to for normies, right?

Normies typically aren't waifu fags. Most of them don't even know that such people exist.
>>
>>90922584
MCU Spider-Man is gearing up to be the most relevant iteration, and Liz Allan is the love interest for him. They aren't going to want to follow Sony at all, so don't expect MJ or Gwen to be prominent or even present.
>>
>>90922795

That's kind of why I asked it.

He'd either be unable to answer it and slink away, or give a dumb answer that makes him look stupid.

He clearly doesn't recognize the importance of a stable supporting cast.
>>
>>90922702
I don't really buy into having love interests for the sake of having love interests. A character can have a good cast of supporting characters to care about without having one of them pushed as more important than the others.

>>90922795
>He can't answer because he hasn't even read the comics in the last seven years.
False.
>>
>>90922819
Batman is the DC go to for normies.

A lot of normies outright hate Superman for dumb normie reasons.
>>
>>90922770
>Those movies aged like milk

Buzzword phrases means nothing, by the way.
>>
>>90922860
>He clearly doesn't recognize the importance of a stable supporting cast.
You came to this conclusion just because I'm not putting Mary Jane on a pedestal?
>>
>>90922906

Fine then.

Without naming a love interest or Aunt May, name the members of Peter's strong supporting cast.
>>
>>90922964
No, he came to that conclusion based on reading your posts.
>>
>>90922964

There's a difference between not putting her on a pedestal and acting like she's completely irrelevant.
>>
>>90922931
It's a common expression, not a buzzword phrase.

"Buzzword" is more buzzword-ish than that.
>>
>>90923011
Common expressions can also get reapplied and turned into a buzzword phrase. Especially since "Aged Like Milk" gets overused here as an excuse to avoid critical thinking.
>>
>>90922965
From the last seven years? Ok.
JJJ.
Harry Osborn.
I liked those guys at Horizon.
The FF has always been close with him.
Robbie.
Betty Brant. Was a love interest, once upon a time, but I'm counting her because they developed a good platonic relationship.
Flash.
Spock's midget lover.
JJJ Sr.
Prowler is hanging around now, right?

That's probably the best I can do off the top of my head, considering that I don't really keep up with Slott's work anymore and it's been awhile since I read the older ones. I didn't include villains, either.
>>
>>90923160
How is it an excuse to avoid critical thinking? I was using it to convey my opinion that the movies don't hold up to standards as well as they did when they came out.

Call me out on that instead of my word choice, retard.
>>
>>90922981
How? I haven't been talking about anyone but Mary Jane, and I haven't even been overly negative about her.
>>
>>90922992
That's the thing though, when she's not up on a pedestal her relevance drops, fast.
>>
>>90923292
>I was using it to convey my opinion that the movies don't hold up to standards

So then what does your opinion of the films have to do with the main argument you were trying to make earlier (about how Mary Jane is an irrelevant character and how everyone else arguing against you is putting her on a pedastal)? It's about as relevant to the argument you were trying to make as my argument about your word choice.
>>
>>90923256
>JJJ.
Not anymore if held to the standards you hold MJ.
>I liked those guys at Horizon.
Clearly they left such a good impression that you can't even remember their names.
>The FF has always been close with him.
The FF are not supporting characters of Spider-Man. They're the Fantastic Fucking Four.
>Robbie.
Not anymore by the standards you hold MJ.
>Betty Brant. Was a love interest, once upon a time, but I'm counting her because they developed a good platonic relationship.
Not anymore by the standards you hold MJ.
>Flash.
Has become his own entity largely seperate from Peter.
>Spock's midget lover.
Is Spock's supporting cast member more than Peter's, and that is how she is remembered.
>JJJ Sr.
Not anymore by the standards you hold MJ.
>Prowler is hanging around now, right?
If you need me to answer this for you, clearly you shouldn't have counted him.

Harry was the only one you named that still kind of matters.
>>
>>90923466
I didn't bring up the movies.
>>
>>90923586
Your argument is that Mary Jane will no longer be the most well known love interest. Which would still involve things outside of comics, hence cartoons and movies.
>>
>>90923553
My standards for Mary Jane aren't especially high, so they actually do count if they're held to the same standards. I don't even know why you did this, because it doesn't make sense. If you were to ask me if Mary Jane was a strong member of his supporting cast when they were married, I would have said yes. My argument is that she just isn't as special or definitive or integral as you all believe she is.

The Fantastic Four and Flash can both be their own things and members of Peter's supporting cast. Are you really going to deny that they're practically family?

I know Prowler is hanging around, I don't need you to answer that for me.

Just because my memory fails me doesn't mean that the Horizon characters weren't both present and prominent in the stories in that period.
>>
>>90923708
In the cartoons she's only very prominent in the '94 cartoon, unless I'm missing some obscure one. In Spectacular the spotlight was primarily on Gwen. In Unlimited he was in a different reality. I don't watch Ultimate.

As for the movies, like I said earlier the Raimi ones did not do much to endear her to the audience. She was just a stereotypical girl next door love interest and only served to be a focal point for drama. The ASM movies had Gwen, and Homecoming will have Liz.

So she doesn't really have a commanding lead on those fronts either.
>>
>>90923914
> unless I'm missing some obscure one.
MTV series.

>In Unlimited he was in a different reality.
In which he wouldn't shut the fuck up about getting home to Mary Jane.

>I don't watch Ultimate.
I guess that means it doesn't exist?
