ITT things in cartoons based supposedly based on reality that you've never actually seen IRL

I have never in my life seen those chicken/turkey sock things
>>
>they're actual paper booties

Huh.
Always figured they were stylized bone, like manga meat
>>
>>90869390
they havent been fashionable in years but they did exist. i think you can see em in that famous norman rockwell painting
>>90869481
you do notice in cartoons the bones are always sunbleached white instead of cooked-brown

i love threads about this kind of thing but I can't think of examples when pressed

>>

Wait. Were those real? I thought it was a cartoon invention. Did early 20th century banks put dollar signs on their money bags? Anyone have a source one way or the other?
>>
>>90870153
i can almost guarantee dollar-sign-bags are a political cartoon convention. they're visual shorthand.

>>
>>90869390
They're called 'chop frills' or 'turkey frills'. They serve both an aesthetic and practical purpose by covering up the exposed bone and keeping your fingers clean. Now that food presentation has generally gotten a lot more minimalist, you're not going to see them much outside of swanky dinner parties.
>>
>>90869983
Depends on where you live.

City cops are useless everywhere.

I live in a large, wealthy, mostly white and really conservative town, so they pump tons of money into the police force to take care of those scary blacks, and there's a lot of honor involved, so most of the cops are physically fit, well-educated and experienced. You'd never catch them eating shitty junk food like donuts.
>>
>>90870355
Bombs like these were the norm throughout ancient history because they were a really effective design that could be thrown by hand or launched by artillery. However, the shells were often made with ceramic, since it's a LOT lighter and shatters readily to form shrapnel.
>>
>>90870293

Cops cutting in line is the least of their problems right now and they're not particularly interested in improving.

>>
Probably the most annoying thing is animators' general vague understanding of how policemen catch criminals.
On tv of course, but also in cartoons you see shit like cops planting fake evidence so the guy confesses, or a cop going against orders to stalk someone, or a criminal who finds out that someone has evidence just confessing everything without contacting a laywer

Or a hero stopping a crime before it happens and tying up the criminals and calling the police to pick up the bodies, as if they even have a case against them when there are no witnesses.

Shit like that, that would in the real world constitute dismissal of evidence, unacceptable behavior, etc. and allow the defendant to get off scot-free
>>
>>90874681

>and allow the defendant to get off scot-free

Actually, it would just be a mistrial or evidence getting dismissed.
>>
>>90874769
mostly, yeah, but stuff like bringing someone in on some unfounded suspicion, you couldn't legally detain them for long.

Mostly it'd just make a slightly stronger case for the defense, but you know what i mean.
>>
>>90874681
Except cops plant evidence all the time. If caught it can be dismissed but since they're never punished for it (or any other malfeasance) what do they have to lose?

Can confirm: grew up in a small southern town with a sheriff that looked more like Boss Hogg than Rosco P. Coltrane. The fat fuck spent a good part of most days camped out about a half mile outside town at a locale speed trap where the road wrapped around and the posted limit went from 55 to 25 ... meaning unless you were local and knew to take your foot off the gas as soon as you started the curve (or stomped the breaks the second you saw the sign) you'd more than likely be looking at a ticket for going 10+ miles over the posted limit.

Cops generally tend to be parked outside of places that are open at unusual hours of the night because most low effort robbers aren't going to rob a business unless there's actually someone there to rob. Donut shops also sell coffee, so they tend to have extra late hours. It'd be kind of dickish for the cops not to get to eat on a long shift / for the cops to be looming in the parking lot without being customers. So, cops & donuts.

Are cops allowed to pretend they have evidence that they don't? Like telling a suspect, "We just found your fingerprints on the gun" when they didn't? Or is that illegal because it heavily encourages the suspect to confess for a lighter sentence whether or not they actually did it?
>>
>>90898771
They can, but if they do it to a certain extent the evidence could be thrown out of court. Its most extreme form is entrapment, where police officers induce a suspect into committing a crime for the sake of arrest them for said crime.
It is not unheard of for them to make shit up in an interrogation in order to make it look like they have a better case than they already have. For example, with two suspects they could tell one that the other already confessed and implicated them in order to get them to crack. It is underhanded yes, but legal.
Real scummy cops hold people in interrogation and verbally abuse the suspect until they confess. With impressionable and frightened people they end up confessing for something they had zero involvement in and the real criminal is never caught.

I'm not sure about that but I would assume that if you confess then the confession would still be admissible. There actually IS legal precedent for accepting a confession compelled by inadmissible evidence. The confession itself is viewed as something separate so it's admissible regardless of what motivates it.

Old-Timey Cartoon Hillbillies are basically the north's blackface for poor whites/people living in the south in the early 20th century.

They essentially looked like that because:

Men don't do any sissy shaving
What else are you going to wear when tilling your crop
Sewing is women's work, but its still functional enough for me to wear
Shoes are for church or working in mud
They were Scots-Irish mutts
It's distinct and made of metal
Moonshine did come in those during Prohibition (NASCAR was actually started because they made a bunch of supercars to outrun the law during Prohibition and didn't know what to do with them afterwards)
Ain't enough stone to make brick houses in the Smokeys
That's a blunderbuss

Last night I saw the Loud House episode about Lana (pic related) and Lincoln trying to save frogs that were going to be dissected in class.
I never dissected a frog in school, but apparently it's still a very common thing in the US.

Depending on where you live, you could try hitting up some goth spots like clubs and concerts. Maybe even ask some of the more social goth icons like Voltaire for recommendations about the scene.

Trad goth has been phased out in favor of tumblr fashion among the preteen/teen crowd, though.

In the US, cops are allowed to lie about pretty much anything. They can tell you you're not in trouble to get you to talk more, they can make up laws to convince you to do what they want, they can lie about evidence, etc. That's why it's so important to only talk to them with a lawyer present, so you have some trained to know what is true or not.

Do people really get picked up at home by those yellow school buses in America?
>>
>>90916912
no, they get picked up at bus stops and they're not always yellow
>>
>>90916912
Yes. Some years, I remember having to walk down to the end of my street and gathering with the other kids on the street at the "bus stop." Other years, the bus conveniently drove right up in front of my house. It was a big source of anxiety for me a lot of mornings to make sure I was out in time not to miss it.

I think when my sister and I were kids, this transport was free, but to my understanding, now kids' parents need to pay some kind of fee for this service? At least in our region. What's the deal with that? I don't get how government funding works. I thought the appeal of public school was that it was funded through your taxes.

>>90870304

No, that's totally a thing. High school advanced honors course, though, not middle school.

around there we dissect edible animal parts, like chicken heads, fishes or beef hearts, and sometime big cockroaches. frogs would cost too much, who would raise/harvest them just for 2 hours of school time?
>>
>>90918664

My high school got pig fetuses to disect
>>
>>90917161

>He breaks off the whole stem when he separates one bana from the rest

The stem breaks by itself right at the banana though, leaving a neat open hole you can peel from

If you want how monkeys do it, I think they just pull down one side of the peel then squeeze the rest of the banana out, it slides easily
>>
>>90918509
I haven't. Not a surprise, considering I'm not in school and don't know anybody with kids.
>>
>>90910395
This. My class never really got past just peeling back skin and didn't really get into the organs or anything. Didn't help that nearly all of them were strays that had been euthanized by animal control when they were right on the point of starvation and really didn't have much more than mangy skin and bones. Supposedly a healthier animal is easier to take apart, our teacher told us. She may have been trying to make an excuse for the poor quality instruments. One kid ended up with an overweight housecat that had been put to sleep for whatever reason, though, and that presented it's own problem, with all the fat that needed to be dug through. The teacher let us all examine that one for comparison to our own. My main takeaway from that class was the difference between the insides of a starved creature and an overstuffed one. Neither is pretty.

>who would raise/harvest them just for 2 hours of school time?

It's a pretty neat class project to raise frogs from tadpoles themselves if the resources are available. Though, it'd be pretty difficult to get the kids to dissect them when in that situation they'd probably grow to be considered class pets.

By having lots and lots of lackeys and sub-lackeys hoping to become lackeys that kiss up to them. It seems to be present in less highschools than cartoons would lead you to believe, but you can see it much better in politics. That's basically a glorified popularity contest where often the biggest douchebags rise to the top.
