The momdad kids were a failed attempt to bring the comic back to when it was about kids discovering a mysterious and mystical land and trying to make their way through discovering it and themselves. In the end it failed because 3/4 of the characters sucked ass, but I get the attempt.

Karkat was just a fun character who didn't have much a place in the plot. And the running gag was that he thinks he's an important leader, but he's probably the single least important main character in the story.

No, what pissed me off the most was that flash where you meet all the Alpha troll kids through whatever stabby mcGee's name was. Not only did it validate the absolute worst parts of the fanbase and provide an exposition dump of horrible, horrible characters that have nothing to do with anything, but in the center of it was Alt-Vriska who would continue to do this as well as turn the plot into an atrocity that had to be erased to be "fixed."

The matriorb was a form of resolution. "Getting the Egg somewhere safe" seemed far closer to home and closer to the actions of the characters as a goal than the actual goal of SBURB. The amount of distance between the characters and the intended mechanics of the game being another recurring issue of the story, after all.

I don't know where you got the impression that Kanaya was supposed to be the mother figure of the group; that was clearly Karkat's role.

I'd honestly blame Lord English more.

Notice how he was only good when he was this vague idea, this vague shape of an ultimate villain. Then when he became a manchild, he was more thematically appropriate, but whoops, Hussie couldn't think of a way for the characters to beat him in a thematic way because he was too busy going on a meta wank because now not only was Lord English an all powerful time lord who was also a manchild, he was also a meta commentary on people who dislike the comic or whatever?

Lord English was way too many ideas stuffed into one conflict that got resolved in the clumsiest possible way. It could have been about the trolls helping the kids beat Bec Noir and solving Sburb and not only would it have been simpler, it would have just made a better story. Instead Hussie insisted on introducing character conflicts without tying them to the plot or its resolutions and it just fucked everything up because he made a villain that really honestly had NOTHING to do with the main characters. Yeah sure he shaped the world around them but when at the end you have the characters themselves wondering, "Why are we fighting this guy?" then shit, that's actually a really good fucking question that the story never bothers answering because you barely ever see them fight the villain at all.

Honestly, what Homestuck became was so crushing to me. To me and a lot of people, Homestuck was one of the best internet-made works out there, certainly the only plot-based webcomic worth reading from start to finish unironically. You could tell Hussie really had a lot of fun with it, he interacted with the fans, made references to memes and theories.

Then Act 6 came and he just fucked it up. Like always, the cancer that is Tumblr swooped in and ruined everything. They were his biggest fanbase, so he (at least felt) like he had to cater to them and just filled the damn thing with worthless SJW bullshit. Then he just kept having pauses, getting bigger and bigger each time to the point it was hard to even care about Homestuck anymore because it was so long since it updated. Then he just started blatantly outsourcing to other, usually shitty, artists instead of giving us the charming visuals he'd been providing the first five Acts.

All leading up to a half-baked, still incomplete ending that just leaves an empty feeling inside.

Homestuck had the potential to be one the greatest web THINGS ever, but it got ruined. It's like watching a kid grow up and getting straight A's in school, but then in college becoming a drunken drug abuser that's a hollow shell of their former self. It's just depressing.

Theory: Caliborn gains the souls of people he kills and they get added into Lord English and himself retroactively. That's why he's the embodiment of old Hussie, because he actually killed old Hussie. The Hussie in the dreambubbles is a fresh self insert and the one that would turn into the numale we all know and love. (Proof: that Hussie mishandles Hiveswap's budget. Just like real life!) Homosuck is Old Hussie's soul trying in vain to complete his webcomic.

Note: Caliborn doesn't absorb the souls of the ghosts he kills, because he's actually destroying those souls and there's nothing left to absorb.

Black King: endgame raid type boss for a DikuMUD like Everquest or World of Warcraft.

Jack Noir was a named NPC that took over the Black Queen role, endgame could've been espionage, or a grand caper like a fantasy "Ocean's Eleven". But Jade & Bec glitched their game by giving one of the run-as-root game constructs as a pre-entry prototype.

On top of all this is Lord English, who is playing PvP, and not only is is playing NewGame+ after finishing his game in Nightmare difficulty, he's also hacked his copy of the game by breaking shit with the crowbar. He's the kind of shitbag that has not just level cap but also best-in-slot and realm-first gear, managed to hack his own game to give himself mod access so he can ignore safeties, and then goes to the starting area for other players just to one-shot them and laugh in the chat window.

The trolls taking over the comic swallowed the space to resolve SBURB. If they had stayed resolved at Murderstuck they'd have been fine, great even, but Hussie didn't have the discipline for that.

Act 5-1 contains some of the funniest moments in the entire comic, only rivaled in that regard by the Midnight Crew intermission. Hussie's brand of comedy lies in the absurd, and writting a race of aliens gave him an opportunity to really showcase that. While the act did suffer from pacing issues, having too many characters, and introduced cancerous elements both into the story and the fanbase that would eventually ruin the story, the act itself is fine.

Homestuck really started to go to shit when Hussie started telling instead of showing, when it really became apparent that he was writting himself into a corner (aka, the Scratch intermission).

And it has been no easy task, though I've had the benefit of having the comic be 'completed', meaning the lack of an ending and any real closure has freed me to do what I've always needed to do, which is bullshit everything. In the year 2009, four kids play SBURB, a reality-warping RPG. It's basically Jumanji: world-ending edition.
SBURB lets them escape the apocalypse by pulling them into an alternate dimension, composed of a few planets filled with quests.
In the process of playing the game and then escaping, one of the kids accidentally gives godmode powers to a dangerous NPC called Jack.

Jack the killer NPC ruins the kids' game session until they can't hope to win. Meanwhile, internet trolls contact the four kids and harass them.
The internet trolls are actually aliens playing their own, separate session of the game. They say Jack crossed into their game and ruined it.
SBURB's purpose is revealed. The game is a bargain between two cosmic forces with opposing views on whether to create new universes.
The game pops up on a sentient species' planet, causes the apocalypse, and pulls kids into it. A new universe is created if the players win.

It turns out the aliens beat the final boss, created the kids' universe (ours), and should have been let inside to become its rulers/gods.

The kids use the "Scratch", a device hidden within the game, to reset the session and erase Jack while they escape somehow.
They manage to flee, but Jack finds a way to jump into the aliens' game session. The aliens can't hide much longer, so they escape too.

They meet the kids in the vast void between two game sessions. Meanwhile, Lord English, a time-traveling demon worse than Jack appears.
It turns out the Scratch resets the entire universe. In the new universe, the kids' parents (but teen-age) play the game instead.

It's canon in that various characters have made comments about it, Dave and Karkat have shown a lot of affection with each other in Vriskagram and talked about each other a bunch, Hussie made a vine about it... but they've never interacted romantically or confirmed anything.
Basically it's a way for Hussie to make M/Money without actually having to write The Gays, just like how he got people to paint Homestuck as progressive WRT race by saying you could draw/headcanon whatever races.
