I'm pretty sure it was actually either Spielberg or Lucas who made Bluth cut it from the movie.

Saying it was too intense, would freak kids out, etc.

Though from what I understand the 10 minutes weren't even all Sharptooth stuff. They just kinda cut some bits for no reason (if you watch it it's sometimes obvious when a random cut occurs) and rearranged/snipped some sequences in the Sharptooth scenes to make the peril less intense or something.

Probably the most obvious change was that Littlefoot was somehow supposed to find the valley on his own without the others, but then go back to save them-- I'd guess most of what was cut/rearranged concerns that. Also they killed Sharptooth to prevent him from entering the valley in the original plan; in the final cut it just seems like they happened to do it coincidentally.

Watching the movie recently, while there was some obvious cuts to many scenes, what caught me more was how a majority of the narration felt obviously tacked on since it was just telling you how characters were feelings during certain scenes despite being obvious with the scene composition.
