What's interesting about Aku is that he refuses to directly harm children and wants to be admired by them rather than feared. The thing about the nature of Aku's evil is that while he sometimes engages in petty sadism, most of his self-serving actions (and they pretty much are all self serving when it comes down to it) are in service of his desire to be acknowledged as the "master of masters" who rules all. Even the silly things like him trying to get the children to like him reflect this, because he wants to be seen as in control, admired, worshiped, revered. I'd say more Lawful Evil overall, as he's trying to keep his empire running smoothly enough, and puts up a front of systematic rule, but he's not above fucking people over every once in a while just for the fun of it if he thinks he can get away with it (The Triceraquins) and still have his empire.

It's interesting to note how as time went on, he became more lawful. He comes out of the pit of evil from space, and initially just burns and destroys until he is stopped. Then when he rises again when Jack is a child, he initially burns and destroys, but rebuilds in his own image, enslaving the humans under his soldiers. When Jack finds him in the future, Aku has become even more subtle, sometimes putting forward a front of mercy and fair play and order, and creating a much larger political system with himself as the immortal ruler.

Lawful evil with an addled mind over time and so much absurd longevity that he finds humor in the weirdest shit simply because he has so many memories blinking in and out of thought at random times, so when shit happens that gives him a flashback of similar events, he randomly cracks the fuck up, making it difficult to take him seriously as a force of outright consistent and fear-inducing malice compared that to the savagery of his armies or puppets/pawns under his orders.
