What would his role in the story be?

Kind of a damned if you do damned if you don't thing. Lorefags (scoff) will complain if no mention is made of him, but having him be a pivotal plot point would just be kind of lame. This story was added to give a whiff of a resolution (and the thousand of implied stories leading up to it) when none was planned, but if they're actually going for the resolution, "Jack gets skilled enough karate chops Morpheus into giving him access to a time portal" is a pretty lame one.
