>creator of a cartoon people turned into a meme is diagnosed with a disease people turned into a meme
this world has a weird sense of humor.
>>
I've seen 2 people from my family die from this and I'll probably die from it too. Shit sucks.

At least it sounds like it's not the genetic version, which tends to progress faster.
>>
What is it?
>>
>>90701997
Age Location Sex
>>
>>90701997
neurodegenerative disease that fucks up the pathways between your brain and your muscles. you gradually lose most if not all muscle function and usually die from respiratory failure, that is if you don't die from something that your now-shitty immune system can't fight off.
>>
>>90701997
remember that time were retard started droping buckets of cold water at each other as a challenge

well that meme started as someting really serious to inform people about ALS

a disease that makes all of your muscles slowly fail until you die

it's a really a horrible thing
>>
>>90702114
wasn't ALS actually cured because of that though?
>>
>>90701997
Its a neurodegenerative disorder that leaves one paralyzed. The person dies usually 2 to 5 years after diagnosis.
>>
>>90702174
no but they made lots of leaps in treating it from all the donations
>>
>>90702174
cured?

i don't think so, it raised awareness and gave a lot of money to research but i never heard about a cure
>>
>>90700291
Is it still 2016?

2017 isn't looking so good
>>
>>90701997
Something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
>>
>>90702174
no, but it did raise an unprecedented amount of money for ALS organizations. A lot of that money goes toward helping people diagnosed with ALS and their families, especially since health insurances tend to be shit and slow with providing equipment, if they cover it at all. Some of the money went to research and there have been some strides with certain types of ALS in terms of finding more gene codes that cause it and starting more drug trials.

It's literally the worst fucking disease you can ever be diagnosed with

First your body goes through tremendous pain and becomes weaker by the day. Then you become a quadriplegic. Then you die all within a 5 year period

Don't know when Stephen was diagnosed
>>
We were fooled. Anyone who thought this was "best timeline" or just a really good one because of things like Samurai Jack coming back were wrong.

This is our punishment for being happy, we get SJ back but Stephen gets the worst disease.

Don't ask for anymore miracles, because they aren't miracles, they're just strong monkey paws.
>>
>>90702896
It says he was diagnosed early.

The progression depends on a lot of factors.

After witnessing and tracking multiple people I know dying from this, I swear that just getting the diagnosis speeds things up. Someone I know had trouble with their leg--pain, weakness they couldn't explain, it was getting worse very very very slowly and just in the one leg--for a year, got the diagnosis, then within a month couldn't move at all.
>>
>>90702174
The found a gene that caused it, which means they're much closer to curing it, but a cure will take much longer to not only develop, but also get through all the FDA hoops n shit
>>
Why is this not being talked about more? Why is there no sticky?

This is as serious as it's gotten in a long time.

This is bad
>>
>>90703165
They're not really much closer to curing it, sadly. There are multiple types of ALS and within those types multiple genes and gene mutations that can cause it. They just found another gene. Which isn't to say that isn't progress, but unfortunately just finding this gene doesn't mean they're much closer to a cure.

As an unashamed fan since I was 8 in 2003 (though not to extreme otaku levels of buying merch because I'm too poor for that)...I'd rather be happy that Mr Hillenburg has managed to make a mark on people from his blood, sweat and tears; that he managed to see that explosive success (>10 seasons and two movies!) before his time is up.

If I were in his shoes finding out about the diagnosis, I'd smile anyway because "I did it". It's better than having your life be so lousy, useless and in vain until the end (God forbid that would happen to me).

With that, I say good luck to him...and may he sail smooth.

If i was to be diagnosed with ALS, i would just ask for someone to shoot me some powerful drug that kills me almost instantly, instead of becoming an invalid and a burden for my family and close friends.

Best of luck to him and his family, fuck ALS.

I live with a constant paranoia that I'm in the early stages of ALS. It's stupid but after watching a few films/docs on it I think it's without a doubt one of the worst ways to die.

Not sure if I'd just kill myself if I found out I actually did have it before I became fully paralysed.

It bothers me how whenever someone well known dies / is confirmed to die soon everyone takes it as their childhood dying to the core of why they feel bad instead of the fact the persons just fucking dying.

Hate to break it to you, but thousands of people died in the middle of me typing this sentence. A lot of them were really really sad. Seeing someone slowly losing who they are is painful no matter the cause.
>>
>>90708088
It's different, if you're in the situation to say MUH CHILDHOOD MAN! then you're obviously more familiar with the person than some no name. 9/10 that means you single them out when the death bell tolls and instead of taking it self centered as your childhood, you'll likely know just enough to feel bad for them directly, but rarely does anyone care about their own life, just theirs. Not a shocker but it's shit.

When has promoting a cause that has needed donations EVER worked through using the 'proper' means or doing things the 'right way'?
People, unfortunately, often don't just fucking donate to shit, they see starving or disabled kids on TV and think "wow, that's so sad :( " and a few might donate. BUT if they see something promoted by celebrities and done in a chain like that (the whole "I did it now 5 people have to do it" thing, also it makes people look like dicks if they don't do it) then they'll donate and raise awareness. Literally NOTHING, no matter how noble the cause in the history of our Earth has caught on as massively, through giving people facts and just telling them in a serious manner to do something, as a cause did that had some sort of entertainment factor attached to it. Live Aid, celebrities adopting African kids and supporting World Vision, the ice bucket challenge, sad documentaries about animal poaching, fuck, even superheroes and TV shows with a moral behind them work so much better at getting people not to be assholes than just telling them not to be. The bucket challenge worked well and that's all that matters, yeah, people SHOULD just donate to things they know are good causes but they fucking don't and this 'game' or 'fad' or whatever you want to call it helped the cause a lot more than any other means would've or have in the past and that's that.
>>
>>90708052
Are we supposed to pretend we knew them personally? Of course we acknowledge that they are real people with lives and families but we don't know that private side of their lives, we know them through their work and are sad that someone who created something we loved has died.

If anything, I think creative people appreciate the outpouring of support from fans. Wouldn't it be nice to know that something you made affected so many peoples lives?
>>
>>90708538
>Wouldn't it be nice to know that something you made affected so many peoples lives?
Yea but I wouldn't want to die and see a bunch of dumbasses post online that their childhood was dying because of my passing.
>>
>>90707900
>a few million
On August 29, the ALS Association announced that their total donations since July 29 had exceeded $100 million.
On July 25, 2016, the ALS Association announced that, thanks in part to donations from the Ice Bucket Challenge, the University of Massachusetts Medical School has identified a third gene that is a cause for the disease.

Bitch about celebrities if you want but 100 mil in new donations resulting in discovering a new gene that causes the disease sounds like a pretty great outcome to me in exchange for a little harmless fun.

>>90704293
He's the exception to the norm - no one has any goddamn idea how he's lived this long.

He may have a condition that mimics ALS, but isn't actually the disease, or a weird version of ALS.
>>
>>90707900
People that whine about the Ice Bucket Challenge are ridiculous. I work with a local ALS organization that raises money for patients and families through a yearly walk and we normally only raise about $15,000 with 30 teams total. The year of the Ice Bucket Challenge? Our little local walk raised $2 million. Two. Million. It was fucking insane. And all because of the hype around the challenge. We were able to purchase so much equipment that improves quality of life. 100 laptops outfitted with communication and eye technology that can be loaned out for free to patients (insurances rarely, if ever, will cover these types of equipment even though they improve quality of life 100000x); electric wheelchairs that can be loaned to patients until the person's insurance will give them one; bi-pap machines (did you know it's a pain and a half for many ALS patients to get these, even though they can prolong your life, because they're not traditionally used for ALS?) humidifiers, hospital beds, leg and arm braces, even in-home assistance for people who are waiting for insurance to approve paying for help or for people who need additional help but insurance won't cover it.
>>
>>90703165
It's not genetic most of the time, though they did discover a few years back that it's caused by misfolded proteins.
>>
>>90705797
I know I shouldn't try to talk politics here, but my family had insurance try to weasel their way out when dad got ALS. Shit's not even acceptable in ancap land, but fuckers tried to drop a post-existing condition.
>>
>>90708016
The sad thing is, your paranoia makes sense.

>dad drove me around in middle school
>not frequently but more than once or twice he'd drop the keys right after taking them out of the ignition
>I joked that something might be wrong with him
>he actually did have ALS, mom told me after the fact that they knew something was up with him medically when I was in 7th grade
>I wasn't actually aware of anything until 10th grade when he had clear difficulty walking, by the end of that he was firmly wheelchair-bound with breathing assistance, and he died shortly after I graduated

Are you me? I also have fears of having ALS sometimes during the year(because hypochondria.) I try to tell myself that an 18 year old guy can't get this since it's only people who are older who get it but even then it's haard to not think about it.
>>
>>90710744
Ugh I'm sorry that happened to you. Something similar happened to me, where my dad was told what was wrong wasn't ALS and we had all these lighthearted jokes about it being off the table, then bam! Different doctor diagnosed it and he died about a year later.

>>90708016
It runs in my family and there's this crazy tension anytime anyone drops anything or their hands feel weak

Just a clumsy moment or brain fart? Or... ALS weakness in hands?
>>
>>90712312
>it's only people who are older who get it

my brother got it at 23, cousin got it at 26

It's usually familial ALS that shows up in younger people, though.
>>
>>90707900

So you'd rather they didn't get funding just so you can garner sympathy for your death sentence?

I mean, if you do have it, I am legitimately sorry for you, I think its one of the most terrifying ways to go. But pragmatism over all is most important.

If anything, just call it Lou Gehrigs disease. People still associate that name with a terrible disease even if they don't associate the name ALS, despite Lou Gehrigs disease BEING ALS.
>>
>>90707900
>You tell a random person on the street about you having ALS, they won't understand the gravity of it or feel sorry for you, they'd just mention the ice bucket challenge and how they did it and how it was cool or something. Most won't know or really care what the illness does to people.

That's true for any disease. People are stupid. There are medical professionals who will go "huh?" when you tell them you have ALS. It doesn't mean that the millions and millions raised for research and assistance should be downplayed or ignored.
>>
>>90711454
>At least he won't suffer completely right? He's made enough money from spongebob right?

With his money he can afford to hire round the clock nursing care, which to be fair is more for his family than for him, in addition to ensuring he has the latest technology to make his last months or years comofrtable.

It is in a growing number of places.
>>

Right now? No cure. 100% fatal, eventually. There5s one approved drug that might, and this is MIGHT, give you like 3-5 more months but there's no guarantee you will have motor function in those extra months. Lots of drug trials and studies, some promising, some not.

What Sponge needs to do to be itself again, or as close as it needs to be
>more bubbles and more bubble sounds during movement
>slow focus on scenery, water glare waves sometimes in the sky
>fade the colors some, but not muted as if they were in the dark partially
>get back to realizing they're underwater instead of having an episode play out as the same as it could be if it were anywhere else in existence
>stop being dicks to characters for no reason, and if it's for a joke make it short and not extended
>early sponge wasn't without it's non-aquatic themed episodes (grandma's kisses) but it still had atmosphere, use it
>use hawaiian comfy music more, use comfy settings more (like the beach)
I'll continue to talk about this until it happens
>>
>>90727777

God has a terrible sense of humor.
>>
>>90727636
My explanation is simple but subjective: it wasn't funny. After the movie Spongebob started doing more 'adventure' episodes where SB and the gang 'saves the day'.

There was no comedy in the premise. It's just a medieval themed episode. They just go along and meet all the other characters who fill different medieval archetypes.

>King Krabs
>Princess Pearl
>Squidward the Jester
>Sandy the Knight
>Plankton the evil wizard

They did the same thing in 'Pest of the West' except the characters were Western characters. Or what about 'Atlantis Squarepantis'? No comedy, just going on an adventure, each character having a song about their one defining trait. I thought it was really lame.
>>
>>90727823
oh, and
>make the backgrounds have hardpaint appearance
>>
>>90727823
I thought about this the other day. In early episodes when characters would talk without music in the background there was this subtle underwater ambience. Little bubble noises and whatnot.

Do they still do that? Most of the new episodes I see are pretty frantic and non stop movement and music.
>>
>>90727898
It needs to be less KEEP THE KIDS ATTENTION but it never will be. The best we get is episode starts with the narrator saying "Ah, [location/setting]" before something happens, and again the narrator has been put off a lot.
>>
>>90727898
>>90727935
Budget/not caring anymore
RS used to do the same idea with Benson moving and his gumballs rattling a bit.

after awhile they start focusing on direct sound effects instead of extras

Stephen's seasons focused on the underwater atmosphere because he was into that stuff and wanted the setting hard. After the movie Paul or whoever didn't have the same heart, that wasn't the main aspect of the show so it was forgotten while they focused on other things.
>>
>>90727935
The original show had the right combo of relaxed and cartoon action. I wonder what Steve honestly thinks of the direction the show has taken. He seems like he prefers the more relaxed pace of the first season. As much as I love seasons 2 and 3, they feel like somebody elses show, namely the writers.

Personally, I think Spongebob is beyond saving. Once you start having to think in terms of 'how do we get the show back to the way it was', you've already lost.

I liked how in the early days you learned tidbits about underwater life without ever trying to feel 'educational'. It was still meant to be funny.

I learnt what a crustacean, bivalve and cephalopod was through SB. And let's not forget filter feeding!

And I liked episodes that reminded you the show took place underwater. The once where a glacier falling into the ocean and drifting into warmer climates causes a snow day underwater. Or the one where the artist at sea drops his pencil into the ocean.

So is it a 100% chance he will die? Maybe he might live a longer life. Magic Johnson has had HIV since the early 90s and he's still alive and doing great. HIV/Aids is basically a death sentence but he's managed to live with it for over 20 years. Stephen might live too. P-Please God let him live

ALS is 100% fatal and it's extremely rare for people to live more than 5 years. Most people who live past 5 years are on artificial ventilation and are completely paralyzed except perhaps some facial movement. It's not like HIV where you can live a normal life if you do happen to live longer than most.

I've heard the show is being produced separate from the upcoming movie this time. Don't know if that means the creative team is just splitting up, or if entirely new people are doing the movie, but I really hope that, if he wants to, he's able to put his all into the movie, and hopefully Nick will allow the show to end the show on that exclamation point - just like he wanted it to end over ten years ago. That is, of course, if that's what Stephen still wants. Maybe he want the show to continue for a long time. Maybe he wants to work on the show for as long as possible, even if that takes it beyond the third movie. All I'm really saying is, I hope his remaining years with Spongebob go the way he wants them to.

So by "100% lethality" you meant, "Everyone who has ALS will die at some point in their lives"? Thank you anon. Without you I would have thought that people with ALS lived forever instead of dying like everyone else.
>>
>>90750397
No, I mean that the disease is 100% fatal. If Stephen Hawking dies because his body can no longer support breathing even on a ventilator, it means he has died from complications related to ALS, which is what caused his body to be unable to breathe on its own and then unable to breathe even with artificial support. Stephen Hawking is an extremely unusual case because the motor neurons which control his diaphragm (allowing him to even benefit from the ventilator) are still intact enough to keep him alive even after decades. For 70% of people with ALS, those neurons die off within 5 years, resulting in respiratory failure. Respiratory failure is the most common way that ALS patients die.

About 50% of people with ALS will die within 3 years; about 20% will die within 5 years; about 10% will die within 10 years; and about 5% will die within 20 years or more.

The scientific community, researchers who have spent decades studying this disease, describe it as 100% fatal because there is no cure for its progression which causes symptoms that will result in your death. You wouldn't say "oh this end stage renal cancer isn't fatal, because everyone dies, soooo...."

ALS is a degenerative wasting disease. It slowly paralyzes you, until you eventually smother.

At least it's faster than Multiple Sclerosis, which rates up there among horrific illnesses with leprosy.
