Good god damn I think she'd prefer to have her dad shitting on her again
>>

Nope. Fuck you Red.
>>
>>90677406
Ok Red is being an ass. Everyone implicitly had a choice Annie isn't some slavemaster. Parley, Smitty and Kat all joined in because of the downright horrific injustice of Jeane's situation. Those two dumbass fairies are the only ones that needed to be cajoled because they're fucking morons.
>>
Is Tom unironically trying to portray Red as right here? What the fuck?

She's going to wake up any minute now.

>>
You know what, this isn't a dream sequence. Red's going to continue dumping on Annie, chapter ends with Annie looking sad, bonus page is Tea asking everyone who's been complaining about Annie's behavior if they're happy now.
>>
>>90677482
Red wasn't even supposed to be there and her presence did nothing but actively endanger the mission. And then we're supposed to think she's the moral voice of reason now.

DREAM SEQUENCE
>>
>>90677482
It's either that, or he was pre-emptively shitting on the readers he knew would raise similar objections.

Who else /alongfortheride/ here? At this point, let's go all out. Have Tony come in and start dumping on her again too. Hell, bring in Ysengrin! Let's get dangerous.
>>
>>90677644
Tom doesn't usually write dream sequences like this.

I'm pretty sure it's real and Red's supposed to be making us reevaluate Annie's actions, but it's coming off as contrived and stupid. Are we really supposed to believe that the whole world is centered around Annie and that her friends are incapable of making decisions without her explicit permission?
>>
You know, I actually did think Annie endangered her friends until Red started explaining it poorly. And the more she tries to project motive onto her and the more Annie believes that bullshit, the more I think "Wait. That's fucking wrong." I find myself now defending Annie, which I'm sure is all a part of Tom's keikaku.
>>
>>90677692
If this isn't Blue creating some sort of illusion to be a bitch or a dream sequence I'm done with this for a while.
>>
>>90677688
They take her to a large auditoriu, large enough for the entire population of the court and maybe also some forest folk. They make her stand on stage for hours with a spotlight on her as every single person in the audience takes turns coming up to the stage and berating and tearing into her over a microphone. Also, the psychopomps and ROTD join in. She's not allowed to sit or leave until everyone gets a turn.
>>
>>90677692
Nah, Red is talking shit, but she's hitting on Annie insecurities, is just a trigger for Annie to evaluate herself.
>>
>>90677692
Just because Annie isn't defending herself very well doesn't mean Red is objectively right in the eyes of the author.
>>
>>90677785
Red is being presented as the well spoken voice of reason in this scene and every time she tries to speak up it's depicted as proving Red right.

Maybe it'll go in a different direction by the end of the chapter but right now its just a sudden, awkward guilt trip.
>>
>>90677762
Also Surma comes bafk from the dead to tell her daughter how disappointed she is in her. And Brinnie the Valkyrie finally returns and expresses how glad she is she didn't end up with Tony because they could have had a daughter that ended up like Annie.

you all realize Red is just trying to deflect from the fact that she fucked this whole thing up and when that comes up again this is all going to swerve all of a sudden.

Then Annie's going to go and try to apologize awkwardly and Smitty's going to tell her that it isn't her fault.

Also everyone seems to have forgotten that Annie LITERALLY SOLD HER SOUL TO SAVE HIS LIFE.

Not very reasonable.

And yeah, I still share the "not going to see the doc because you were afraid of getting in trouble" argument. Bitch should be first and foremost concerned by well being of the friends helping her with her stupid ideas and not whether she gets busted.
Besides, how come the Court doesn't know what's going down around them? She best get busted regardless or something.

>Blue, you look like you've got something to say. Do you?

>>
>annie joined in due to her experience in the ravine and exploration into the origins of jeanne with kat
>kat joined in due to her experiences uncovering the fat robot maker (i forget his name) and how jeanne got stuck down there in the first place with annie
>parley joined in due to her experience with jeanne making her feel her pain
>its not clear when or why smitty joined, but likely due to convincing from parley on the importance of the task and as part of his duty as a court medium
>blue joined because of annie promising her a name for it and has no personal attachment to freely jeanne, pure mercenary work
>red joined because shes a package deal with blue
the only thing reds on point about is blue, but even then she knew the risks, even if fairys are stupidly lackadaisical, why was red there in the first place
>>
>>90677973
Isn't Tom admitting he doesn't always get the balance right here? Also, readership has wide comprehension: same arcs either too subtle or cringingly belaboured. I admit to finding the Janet Winsbury bit confusing, but not the Pax Kat foreshadowing.
>>90678092
She's roleplaying the reader talking to author?
>>
>>90678286
There's definitely a twist. Yep, Red's twisting that knife nice and good in there.
>>

>>
>>90678348
A subtle, cultural one.
>>
>>90678340

>>
>>90678348
I would say that being a fairy means she's inherently selfish and doesn't understand things like sympathy and friends wanting to help others, so she only sees it as Annie pushing others to do stuff for them.

That said, Snuffle isn't that much of an asshole.
>>
>>90678336
No, he's calling you a retard.
>>
>>90678357
I say they either assimilate or they gotta go back Build a ravine!
>>
Remember that page back when they were discussing if it was ethical to force Jeanne away from the place she's been in for such a long time?
Annie responds with something like "i want to take her into the ether".
The alt text on that page was something like "me, me, me. always talking about yourself, annie"

He wasn't just joking around, he did from that point want it to be a selfish endeavor for Annie

How about that?
>>
>>90678396
That makes sense. Red's acting like Annie forced all her friends to help and put them in mortal danger for shits and gigs when they all agreed it was the right thing to do. Red was the one who was there for shits and gigs, and I'm guessing she still doesn't understand what they were trying to do down there. She was kind of right about the fairy formerly known as Blue, but everything else sounds like projection.
>>
>>90678464
I mean, she's only just coming to terms with what Ayilu's near death experience did to her. She's not a reliable source on things.
>>
>>90678437
I guess we need to hear more about Annie's motives. Was it totally charity or was there some kind of personal ulterior motive? I mean, even charity can be painted as selfish if you frame it a certain way.
>>
>>90678396
>Red's acting like this because she doesn't understand empathy
>majority of people on here agrees with her

oh...
>>
>>90678503
But we still have to listen to her for five pages.
>>
When Tom does these scenes there's always something more going on than the obvious.

Think of Annies dad's reappearance. Tom first allowed us to think he was just being a total shit to Annie. It was only revealed some time later that he'd been forced into that position and was sperging out the whole time like a true Carver.

I don't get it. It was Annie's plan yeah, but by the end everyone wanted to help, you can't exactly pin it on her. They all knew it was going to be dangerous beforehand and they still did it, Parley willingly fought Jeanne and Smitty willingly saved her.
And by the end, she's the one who got caught in shit to fix her mistake.

...and so, after Red's stern counseling, Annie spent the rest of her time at Gunnerkrigg Court not going on adventures, instead making up detentions until passing away at the ripe old age of 92, her fire elemental lineage finally snuffed out for lack of progeny.

So, if Annie isn't going to tell Red to fuck off and BTFO her stupid backward logic.

When will Kat come through the door and fuck Red's shit up? Christ, this chapter is laborous.
>>
>>90680986
It feels like Annie's trying to get on Red's terms but yeah, she could reach a point of "well fuck it" and push back.

I wonder if it's still possible for her to mess with Blue's name. Annie suggested a short version and helped spell it but she didn't declare it.
>>
>>90677644
You said this when reynardine poked at Annie's childhood trauma or when Dad Carver arrived to rob her of agency and called her out for her cheating.
>>
>>90677406
What the fuck does that memory even have to do with what Red just said? That was during the mission, when Kat already had planned what she wanted to do and they were already executing it. How the fuck does that relate at all?

Also, wasn't Red herself in this for something she wanted? Doesn't seem like she cares for Annie or her friends at all, she's just pissy because her buttbuddy was put in danger.

We're gonna need someone countering like 80% of everything Red has said so far before the end of the chapter or something like the dream sequence theory to be confirmed because god fucking damn if it doesn't this will be the worst chapter in the comic by a landslide.

Red's point wasn't that they didn't know the risks but that Annie's side of the bargain cost her nothing. They still accepted the offer but that was before Red saw Blue take a sword to the face.

>>
>>90681350
No, those were two separate points she made. Also, even that point only makes sense if she simultaneously thinks of Annie as a friend (since for a stranger it's not odd at all for them to try to get maximum value out of a deal) and not as a friend, since if they are friends she would've just helped her of her own accord and the reward is just a nice bonus. Annie may be retarded socially but Red is even worse.
>>
>>90677973
this wasn't even subtle. They clearly and openly said "they don't believe us".

>>
>>90677406

This is so cringey it makes me wanna cry. Red's arguments literally make no sense: they were all in it, no one was coerced, suddenly it's all Annie's fault if not everything goes according to plan?
It's literally as if Tom thought Annie was having it too easy, and arbitrarily chose a - morally questionable - minor character to deliver a poorly though out jeremiad that, analysing the situation, doesn't apply anyway.
This is clutching at straws for plot development at its finest. I never thought I'd see something this naive from Tom.

Tom is probably the best structural webcomic guy out there, in terms of writing. But he does suffer from over-elaboration. Instead of Red giving Annie a long diatribe, perhaps she should have said a few succinct words and then socked Annie in the face.

It wouldn't make Red right/Annie wrong, but it'd be more effective. The main points Tom is trying to show here - that Annie is to a degree inconsiderate and that Red isn't completely retarded, are good, but Red's rant dilutes the impact.

I feel like the comics been getting more and more centered on Annie as it's gone on, to the point the universe seems to run around her.

When she's involved in something the entire burden has to fall on her, if other people assist her even by choice she's failed her duty. If another character makes a mistake and she was there it's also her fault for not stopping it, and she has to take the punishment. When she's emotionally distressed everyone else stops what they're doing to worry about her or try to help her. The Forest and Court only seem to take action if she's the center of the controversy.

It's gotten ridiculous, and I think this chapter is a symptom of that. Tom's been pushing the idea that it was Annie's job specifically to help Jean move on, and that everyone else was an innocent civilian she dragged into her problems. Annie is not a psychopomp, was not doing it for the psychopomps, Kat has also been invested in Jean from day one because of her relationship with Diego, Parley and Smitty joined the cause for their own personal reasons. But because Annie is the protagonist everything else is secondary.

Why is she being blamed for letting Smitty die at all? She wasn't on the team protecting him, he took the shot for Parley, despite being uninvolved with his stabbing she still took the toll for healing him, and most importantly she's not the one with the ability to fucking teleport anyway. Parley was the one with the power to do something but she was waiting up for Annie to make the decision for her.

>>
>>90678505

Well, the Guides said it was instinct on her part.

Sort of a mindless compulsion that all other interests must serve, then. Psychopomping is Annie's anti-anti-drug.
>>
>>90689507

Eh, if Red hadn't ruined the totally-not-a-wedding-honest ceremony she'd have kept it together.
>>
>>90678505
Mostly because shit's really fucked and Annie's status as half-fire elemental (and the subsequent ether connection) makes her uniquely suited for the job. Not sure what other motivation we can get, honestly.
>>
>no one notices Ayilu clearly doesn't agree with Red
>no one realizes that Red could just as accurately say that last part to Ayilu
Red is not being painted as correct here.
>>
>>90693802
Ayilu hasn't said anything the entire time the rant has been going on, we don't know what she thinks. Annie hasn't really been defending herself and Red's on the offensive in an unusually articulate way.
I agree with you and hope that Red isn't going to be painted correct here but for the moment we'll just have to wait and see.
>>
>>90694204
Look at her face in the last two panels. Text isn't the only medium here. Obviously there's a seed of truth to what Red is saying, but we're not meant to agree wholeheartedly with her and from the looks of things Ayilu does not either.
>>
I really want to trust that Tom's got a reason for the chapter to take this turn beyond just shitting on Annie/pushing the point of her selfishness entirely hamfistedly, but it is a little painful. I'm even fine with the whole "goofy dumbass character has a savage moment of clarity" trope even if it feels like it should have ended by now. Like, Red's never been level-headed, even when she's been pointed; it feels like she should have either come into this tirade a lot more emotionally or gotten more emotional by now and not just had that same blank expression the whole time. It's the main thing making me think this is a dream or an illusion by Ayilu. It's just too fucking dull for the feelings supposedly behind it.

The reason it's bugging me, and I think maybe the reason it's bugging a lot of other people is because it feels so unproductive to the story or to Annie's character. When Renard chewed her out for copying homework it was really the first time anyone had, and kind of got the whole "Annie's getting cocky and selfish" thing started. Then when her father came back and everything came crashing down around her, it actually felt impactful, because finally all the shit she'd gotten away with was catching up with her, and the consequences of her actions in the Court strained against the personal growth she found in the forest in a compelling way.
>>
>>90694716

Before these past few chapters, though, it had all been about Annie trying to regain control over herself without her blinker stone and wrestling with her elemental side and dealing with the guilt of giving up Renard. You can argue she had selfish motivations for going after Jeanne, and of course it put her friends in danger, but none of them ever expressed reservations about it. Both Kat and Parley were actively eager to do something about it, even. It was the first big adventure after her major dressing-down, and it was a plot that's been needing resolution for years. So for this scene to come directly after it feels kind of hollow, especially coming from Red. Annie's already been knocked down quite a few pegs and she's still in the process of climbing back up the self esteem ladder, so the scene doesn't really serve the plot or Annie's character at all except to spell out really plainly that Yeah, It Was Risky. I would've rather seen this play out with Parley, trying to balance her respect for Annie as a friend with the horror and anger settling in as she realizes how much of a gamble (from her perspective, at least) Annie took with asking the guides to save Smitty.

I don't know. I'm hoping that this is supposed to be a way to reintroduce her struggle with her elemental side because that didn't come up at all during the fight. Like either Red's words will devastate her to the point of becoming self-destructive or piss her off enough that she becomes outwardly destructive and has some concrete consequences to deal with. I want to have faith that it'll have a payoff but damn this is the first time I've felt this uncomfortable reading a chapter, and not in a cathartic way.

Didn't we recently have an entire chapter dedicated to saying that as far as the faeries were concerned the court doing the same sort of thing to them it'sn't wrong?

Wow, have you even read this comic?

Clue-in: Red calls the person she LOVES TO DEATH such affection terms as 'butt-face'.

Yes, Red is a total and complete ass. Duh.

That said, she's not completely wrong either, which is why this is so painful. :)

Oh anon.
Foolish, young, naive anon.
It's all about subtlety, you see.
Eroding a girl's self confidence over the years by cutting her out of friend circles or telling her that she fucked up, never ever giving her any praise. Letting her marinade in her misery. That makes for a much more tender meat in the end than just beating the shit out of her.
It's an art. You can't be so crude about it.

You know red, fuck you. No really, fuck you. You, who became a human because it seemed like a fun thing to do. Like being human was some sort "adventure" or "phase" you can jump slip into because it seemed fun. You, who came into the entire Jeanne event because you thought it would be "a fun time and your friend was going" . Not that you had ANYTHING of value to add, just being a fucking liability like you always are. Funny, how you're talking about getting something someone wanted. Just like you wanted to be a human, just like you got your hair all done up to get ayilu's attention, just like you wanted to go to the boarder of the court and the forest and see what these kids where up too.

No red, this isn't something annie "wanted". I "want" a candy bar, I "want" a hot girlfriend, I want many things. No annie knew this needed to happen. And you know what? So did kat, parley, smitty, and fuck even robot. They saw two tortured souls at the bottom of that divide and decided they should do something. Something that the did actually benefit from at all! Fuck I say they are all probably worse off in the grand scheme of things. But they felt it was the right thing to do and they did it. It wasn't some Sunday stroll to the ice cream shop because they "wanted it". And you see red, thats the trick to being human. Its not some name , or going to school and doing math the those cool hoomans do. Its perceiving the world and acting upon it accordingly. They knew the risks, and I have a hard time believing that you and ayilu didn't either.

I'm sorry ayilu got in danger and it scared you. But if you think this whole exchange for some whim of annies to sucker in her friends to do her bidding then I'm sorry but no. Annie has spaghetti pockets and cannot properly defend herself against the illusion or bad dream or some shit I hope is happening vs red of all people in this strip giving her a morality lesson.

She went in with little planning which makes no sense given how much they've looked into the situation.

Also who the fuck restats your DEX build into a STR build when you are facing a hyper accurate monster.

Muscle Parley is shit and I'd lump her at fault as much as Annie.
>>
>>90707268
>little planning
I don't see it. They clearly had a plan and the plan clearly went well up until it turned out Jeanne can see Smitty's strings.

If anything, Parley's a Quality build.

You're greatly underestimating Jeanne, she's more than just "a fast moving object". Nigga sliced cameras out of the air like it was nothing, the fact that Parley can even go toe-to-toe with her is testament to her speed.

saying that it was part of it is one thing, saying that it's the main reason is something entirely different, and just a huge simplification of what is actually a very complex event

I wonder what the Court's going to say about Annie getting two people named? Surely that's gotta send up some red flags.
>>
>>90707793

There may be nations more thoroughly saturated with empathy and sympathy than the USA, but next one would be an order of magnitude smaller at least. This is like the Victorians turning affected propriety into a competitive personal attribute and blaming their perceived reverses on a general lack of propriety (which they did, anons). Political networks getting periodically busted up and replaced happens anon, just roll with it, it doesn't mean anything that'll change anything come Judgement Day.

Sounds like a good example of your point to me. Asking towards whom sounds like a lack of empathy and sympathy.
>>
>>90713568

He's probably referencing how what ultimately blindsided the losing campaign is that a constituency they implicitly relied on for untold political generations had in recent cycles been giving clear signs of physical crisis and distress, that were consistently ignored in favor of a conventional wisdom that there was no issue worth noticing in that sector. A failure of empathy and sympathy, as it were- blinding oneself to the onset of pain in another person.

You almost have to admire them. They are GOOD at maximum human misery. The Jeanne thing is clearly a sophomore effort on their part in comparison- measly eternal torment compared to this... exquisiteness.

Oh, I think the Court is much, much more competent and dangerous than it seems.

That ether experiment in which they evaporate an entire LAKE is just weird and ominous.

I have no idea what you're basing this speculation on. Parley trained hard to become a better fighter before facing Jeanne, but you are somehow 100% confident that she did it wrong because she got more muscular in the process? Am I interpreting your retarded argument correctly?
>>
>>90717655
He probably believes retarded Japanese tropes like skinny dudes are automatically gonna be more agil and quick when more powerful muscles actually enhance your your speed and agility since those functions rely on the STRENGTH of your muscles.

Those weren't psychopomps. They were things pretending to be them.

Things aren't black/white, buddy
Many of those who voted for trump saw this as a question about if we should empathize with far-away victims of war, or our own people
The other guy asked a perfectly reasonable question
>>
>>90719952
You don't have to empathise with only one group of people which is exactly the point that flew over your head.
>>
>>90720009
What i'm saying is that the election was broken down into two people, as always
and i believe that in the Trump supporters's eyes, they saw one person that wanted to make things better for the locals, while the other was going to make things better for the foreigners

When you're forced to chose one out of only two candidates, you are also forced to give up on certain ideals
You don't -HAVE TO- be lacking in empathy just because you voted for the candidate that in your opinion, would make things better for you

Besides, the original statement was that people voted for Trump because of lack of empathy, that's still a huge oversimplification, as a lot of people have argued that Hillary would be more likely to start a war with other nations than Trump
Not to forget the number of other reasons why she was seen as a terrible choice.

As i said, Things aren't black/white, and it's not possible to break something like this down into one simple answer
