Plus the letterboxing was cool, the mostly silent style was neat, and the art style grows on you. It's really quite beautiful, like a complicated paper puppet show.

Like using mostly sound instead of talking.
A lot of Samurai Jack is just sound if you're paying attention.
Also it has some very well written episodes.
The episode with the worms is 3 different short stories and its done very well.

It's a very creative concept for a show and this concept is applied extremely well. Legendary samurai from ancient Japanese mythos is plunged into dystopian cyberpunk future ruled by the ancient magical eldritch monster the samurai tried to destroy. As such the world is a fusion of industrial sci fi tech and ancient magic that manifests in bizarre ways, and creates a lot of the challenges (or help) that the samurai gets. The ideas born from this concept are very creative and the interplay with the main characters and these elements is done superbly (and the villain is as hilarious as he is threatening), the show is always interesting and the world building is top tier. You never know what to expect and despite Jack being depicted as an unstoppable badass, he still sometimes encounters beings and entities that are equal to or beyond him in the fringes of this crazy world. Jack's victories never feel too cheap either; despite being so skilled and powerful, he's put into situations of legitimate peril, he's clearly mortal and often gets wounded and exhausted even in fights he dominates, and he's still able to succumb to powers that can affect normal people (eg a transformation spell or hypnosis). There's really a lot I could say about the series. It's just a really amazing idea that's done brilliantly.

I get the same feeling with other popular shows like game of thrones and the walking dead. When people hype it up so much it becomes almost impossible for the show to live up to the expectations raised in your head.

That being said, I love this show for being an episodic action show.

I binged the series over a year on my buddys dvd and the show is not only entertaining, but also manages to have nice art and generally tell a great story with limited use of dialogue(not counting the more comedic episodes)

Eeven the comedic episodes like s1 where jack has to steal the water ruby and he is in a suit made me laugh.

In one episode they reveal that the sword was forged by Osiris, Vishnu, and Odin. Literally. Because Aku was a very small part of a much larger cosmic horror like being that they fought. But a piece escaped and crashed on Earth.

The only episodes you absolutely need to watch are the first 3, the Birth of Evil pt 1 and 2 because it has Jack's dad and the origin of Aku, and the Scotsman episodes because he's a recurring character

Other than that you can watch whatever you want. I recommend Jack and the Traveling Creatures tho, because it has the Guardian in it and he apparently will be referenced or "addressed" in Season 5.

Jack and the Zombies + Jack vs. the Ultra-robots also give a few more details on the sword, plus they're fan-favorites.
