Comparing eras, I think it was noted that the stories are about century or so apart.

Then again, that's only using real world analogues, and it's clear these stories are on an alternate Earth, where the countries have different names and time isn't fixed.

I think I get where you're coming from. Whitewashing history and ignoring the struggles of the past can leave a bad taste in your mouth. But on the other hand, I don't think it would be appropriate for the movie to be too dark. It's still a Disney movie and they would want a gay princess to be inspiring to young kids. Including kids who are too young to understand the historical severity of anti-gay oppression.

For example, Tiana lived in Louisiana in the Jim Crow era. There was still racism in that world, but they didn't let it take center stage and sap away the joy of her happy ending. It was a sweet movie instead of a bittersweet movie. I think a princess trading her crown for her happiness would be too bittersweet.

Elsa had magic powers which would have probably been more taboo than homosexuality at the time. But she didn't have to give up her crown. There was some backlash from the antagonists, but then at the end the general populace loved her AND her powers. I want something like that. Something with that classic "happily ever after" Disney feel.

Frozen was not a runaway hit because of the lesbian undertones like tumblr would like to believe, and Moana was not a relative disappointment because of the lack of them. The fact is that the strongest buying force in the US is white people by a huge margin, and no matter how much they try to pretend to act progressive on Facebook they would rather see a movie about their own culture than someone else's, especially considering the over saturation of diversity in entertainment right now. The only reason Tangled didn't do Frozen numbers was due to the expectation. Tangled came out during a quality slump (perceived or otherwise) so audiences were wary despite it being a very solid movie. Frozen did so much better because they baited and switched everyone with the advertisements. They played up Olaf like he was going to be the wacky annoying cash grab but he ended up being low-key and the movie had a great deal of emotional content that was not presented in the ads. There will always be an audience for Disney movies, but when one film's reactions are "it's what you'd expect from Disney" and the other is "Exceeded expectations in every way" then you know which on is going to make bank.
