dude I was like 80-90% with you before, but this is starting to look really awesome

he looks alright to me! more beard would be welcome and appropriate for that outfit
>>
guys im using the simple tumblr webcomic theme

but i have a problem, the "next" "previous" and random buttons only show up at the bottom

and i would like to have them above my comic page below my header

how do i change it i tought it would be like that by default but only get buttons at the bottom
>>
>>90622742
He honestly looks pretty cute right now, though a little short. How old is he supposed to be? I think you could make the color of his pants duller, either make them dark grey/black or washed out blue.
>>
>>90623027
he's supposed to be young though
>>
>>90622742
Too white.
>>
>>90623302
It's a little hard to tell that he's supposed to be young by how broad his shoulders look, and how he seems to have a stocky build. Perhaps you could try to round out his features a little, give him fuller cheeks, maybe a fluffier/swooshier cape too.
>>
>>90623302
how young? I had a pretty good beard when I was 14
>>
>>90623465
you mean like stubble or beard beard?
>>
>>90623188

Messing with the code.

You have to locate the code that represents those elements and the image in the <body> of the page.

Once you do that, you must move the code of the first above the image.
>>
>>90623515
I was thinking just a little chin fur, kinda like doublepines' dipper. this guy looks lumberjacky.
>>
>>90623403
>swooshier cape
you mean like a lighter cape?
>>
>>90623687

any clue on how it should look or how many lines long it should be?
>>
>>90622995
Awww, thanks. I'm really trying to make something genuinely good.
>>
>>90623750
Well not lighter, but looser. Something oversized and baggy could help emphasize your character's small stature/young age.
>>
Well, this coding for my site is beyond me.

I have to edit a plugin to get it to do what I want. I'm going to have to skip it and move on until I learn more coding language. I may be able to find a work around.

Blah Blah Blah. Can't complain to much. Fixed a number of other small things with my site.
>>
>>90624092
he isn't really supposed to be small, just young, like 19-21 yrs old
>>
>>90624581
Ah, okay. By young I was thinking ~12, ignore everything I've said then. His character designs looks pretty good as-is, then.

Maybe someone here could help me find some reference materials. Basically the start of Esper Girl Oko has the titular character in handcuffs as she's being detained by an analog of Interpol, so they're briefing her to determine what kind of threat she is to the world with the potential of being "removed from the chess board"

I need references as to what backgrounds i should use and what I can do to make the first few pages hook the reader in.
>>
>>90626228
hmmm, doesn't Zenigata work for Interpol? maybe some Lupin episodes will have appropriate backgrounds to reference
>>
>>90626292
I'd have to find a scene where Lupin has been arrested and is being questioned by him. The Interviewer is named Rojo and for simplicity sake he's a red-haired Agent Smith from Matrix
>>
>>90626406
ahh so specifically a detention-y area
the only scenes like that I can think of are in some episodes of Venture Bros when they're being questioned

Ok, so tone is something I need to focus on. She's in deep shit and she knows it, all she can do is tell the truth and it might not be enough to save her skin, but she doesn't regret anything (almost) about what she did that put her in those cuffs.

So i'm curious about what I can do to keep that tone going

Making desert region guy in generic fantasy Europe. They wear a lot of layers because, to them, it's fucking cold there.

Which of these designs is best? I'm leaning to far right at the moment.

This actually belongs in a batman/donut thread but there isn't one up and I'm not about to make a new one just for this.
>>
>>90628953
yeah that works great. this guy looks like a guy I'd hang out with and maybe we'd beat up monsters together. minor monsters, around 60-80 pounds.
>>
>>90630179
interesting concept, the heatproof desert layers being thicker so they're more for insulation. i wonder, if they find the desert DAYS cold, how deadly are desert nights to them?
Use all of them, for different people, so the culture isn't all wearing the same outfit. but for the main guy... yeah either middle or far right, depending on how much he has to use his arms in action scenes.
>>90627565
not sure what you're looking for here
>>
>>90630310
I mean they're from the desert and currently in generic fantasy setting, so roughly Norway and such.
>>
>>90630378
oh i see, i read that wrong.
okay then the furs are the best because logically they havent had time to make custom-tailored garments suitable for the weather.. so realistically they would buy local clothing and look like brown norwegians, but for visual distinciton let's stick with furs. especially furs of norwegian animals as opposed to them having carried desert-animal furs all this way

The painting itself looks good, the only critiques I'd have would be to move the eye closer to the ear and move the nose and mouth up a bit. This is a rough version of what I mean.
>>
>>90639045
not the artist, i knew something was bothering me! and.. actually a lot of HSM's characters seem to have really close-set eyes and low nose/mouths.
>>
>>90639157
Anon who posted the edit, I notice a tendency towards long, narrow faces too. This can definitely be a stylistic thing, but this particular piece is realistic enough that having the eye so close to the nose makes the face look deformed.
>>
>>90639035
Shame drove everyone away.
Just like this one.
>>
>>90639045
Oh, thanks for the correction! That eye placement looks a lot better now that I look at it, it never occurred to me that I was drawing them too close. The low nose/mouth is semi-intentional, but she does look much nice with more realistic proportions here.

>>90639157
Question, are the proportions off-putting? I've been trying to make my characters faces look better since they were kinda wonky last chapter, and I'm still in the phase of finding face designs that work.

>>90639425
Do you mean in the character drawings I've posted here? I've been drawing lots of long faces lately because I'm predisposed to draw round faces. Pretty much all the characters I already had designed have round faces. I'm still trying to find a way to give my cast varied faces while still making them fit in with the look of the rest of the world, so any advice would be appreciated.
>>
>>90639871
it's a tiny bit offputting but the only real issue is how it's almost everyone. Like, laserwing has a lot of faces like that too (and a lot of them on girls, which exascerbates the problem), but there's also rounder-faced people too, for variety. now granted your comic has only just started so it only has a few people, but.. there's a definite trend, and you're about to introduce this sphinx lady whose face is even longer, and she's a feline sort so that's the last thing you'd expect (as opposed to, say, a llama woman.. which would be cute and why the fuck isnt that a thing)
>>
>>90639035

*Website: http://ggz.thecomicseries.com/

i couldnt post the page because i keep getting this weird captcha error: "Error: Your image contains an embedded file."

>>90639502

?

what do you mean?
>>
>>90639871
No problem. It can be hard to strike a balance between your style and what people actually look like in semi-realism, which is why it's always good to do studies of real people and give yourself basic guidelines before you draw in the features. For you I'd also keep in mind that the eye appears to get farther away from the nose as a person turns their head, so even if her eye is that close to her nose in front view, it shouldn't be in 3/4 view.

>Do you mean the character drawings I've posted here?
Yeah, and your comic pages. Your characters do have varying facial features and face shapes, but overall they seem to stick to a bit of a formula where the eyes are big and close together, the nose is long, and the mouth is fairly close to the chin. This isn't terrible because it makes your art recognizable and your characters are distinct enough to be more than just recolours but if it's not what you're going for I'd try experimenting with facial features more, like making eyes really small or far apart or having a really squished face.

I see what you mean. Mildew was originally intended to have a very round face in my original sketches/pages but it got longer as the comic progressed. I've been trying to push it back in the opposite direction, but I think I'll try to go a little further just to differentiate her face a little more.

Sphinx lady actually isn't showing up for at least a few more chapters. I was rather pleased with her face as-is but I'll see what I can do to make her more cattish. I thought a long face might fit because I was trying to make her resemble a lioness/cougar rather than a house cat.

Lastly, could I get some thoughts on these two character's faces? They're gonna be showing up soon, fairy girl is going to pop up ~7 pages. I guess they're an example of some characters I have with rounder faces, but do they look too samey right now?
>>
>>90641995
>fairy girl
>girl

>>
>>90641995
yeah it's totally interesting. none of it's BAD exactly. it's your style.
It just means that, when it comes to accidentally overdoing it, you have no wiggle-room. a hair too far and you've curdled the milk.
the fairy is cute byt i'd smallen her nose, A just to make her more unique and B to make her more pixielike (and her figure is already pretty solid and masculine, unless that's what you were going for) plus make sure to enlarge that cranium, it's on the small side. but I super dig her cute boots and her awesome arms. If you were trying for a 'cute pigtail' hairstyle, you want to remember the 90-degree angle rule that governs everyone from mickey mouse's ears to sailor moon's odango
the grumpy goblin there is fucking awesome and is my favorite character.

should have added:
if, instead, you were going for 'bug antennae' pigtails then you did just right and keep them that way.
by the way just going to edit something here, not to 'fix' but just to show you what jumps out to my eye. I wonder if perhaps the close-eyes thing is because you (quite rightfully) use the nosebridge as a guide for the far eye in a face that's turned to the side, but maybe follow that guide a little closely.
>>
>>90642651
Dude the right one looks so bad
>>
>>90641376
It's been like 6 months since I last did proper face studies, I need to get to doing those again. Thanks for the advice.

As for faces, I'm trying to go for a pseudo-anime-ish style. Big eyes are pretty much a given, but I've been giving my characters large noses to try to stay out of the "animu" zone. I'll definitely try to make the noses/mouths higher up and the eyes further apart.
My goal is basically to have my characters' faces be diverse and recognizable from one another, but still work as cutsey attractive animu-esque faces. I pretty much want to do Mogeko character designs with Fullmetal Alchemist facial diversity.
>>
>>90642353
>>90642651
Okay, thanks. So would you mean something like this?
And yeah, her pigtails are antennae and they're expressive, so I don't want to have them frozen in one position all the time.

>>90643962
yeah like that. Maybe a little more cranium still, but this IS a tall lanky girl, right? so she doesn't have to look super petite like the typical julia roberts fairy. She already has a lot of personality and that's great. the impression I get is a really energetic girl, maybe a mako mankanshoku sort.

not to overwhelm you with suggestions, but a rule I always think of is "where would a moustache go, if they had a moustache?" and it keeps me from making upper lips too large. I know that each case is different but there is a chart or a general estimate for analyzing the "success" of a webcomics?
X follower in Y months = good result or average, bad better stop, etc.

if it does not exist we could try to create it with our experiences / observations etc.
>>
>>90650661

If it could be boiled down to a simple formula, more people would have successful comics.

Probably the number one thing for having a successful comic is something that can no longer be achieved and that's "Being one of the first ones to do it."

Many of the most popular webcomics right now were ones that started in the late 90's/early 2000s. They got popular and successful because they were the first ones doing it. Most, if not all of these comics are really not even that good in retrospect, but it was something no one else was doing at the time.

Now, webcomics are a dime a dozen, and you really, REALLY have to do something to make yourself stand out.

Probably the first and most obvious thing is if you have a really good, unique, or otherwise attractive art style. Most of the time, people probably aren't going to even bother looking if you have a really shitty looking comic, or a bland, uninteresting style.

Then once you get people in, you have to have the hook to keep them, and that's good writing, or at least a coherent story and/or interesting characters.

But that's why I say there's no real formula, because sometimes even really nice looking comics with great stories go unnoticed. Sometimes the subject matter at hand just isn't very interesting on the whole, so it gets passed over by most people, so your subject matter and how you execute that also plays a big part.

You really can never tell. Sometimes the weird, seemingly uninteresting comics get a big following.

It also helps to be a pretty personable author. Interacting with your community/fans/followers, and not being a gigantic holier-than-thou douche will do you a lot of favors too.

So I was thinking about making the comic in these four panel formats.

Thing is, A) I don't know the best file size and resolution for comics like this, B) I don't know if people would like it like this and C) I don't know whether or not to have panel borders, seems somewhat intrusive

what do you guys think, here's a draft for the first page, is this format good?
>>
>>90654549
the only reason to measure something so numerically would be to try to replicate it mathematically
>>
>>90655705
Sure. But it makes no sense to me.
I posted some preview pages- about a month ago. That's it. I get between 150-200 new people a day. I try to post every few days, now.
It was at 1k before I noticed the gain, though, so I don't really know what set it off.
If freaks me out.
>>
>>90655761
4-panel format is good.
file size is irrelevant. make the resolution at least 2500 pixels wide while working on it, ideally 3000+
when you're done, shrink it to 1000 pixels wide.
definitely have panel borders, they're not intrusive, they delineate the panels. it's impossible to read without them
of course people will like it, they have no choice
>>
I agree with >>90651126 though there are a few things I'd like to add.
Yes, webcomics that started in the early years of the internet still have a massive amount of readers. People who've been sticking around for more than 10 years or so.
However, there a few other things that can determine why a comic does good or bad, apart from the artwork.
For example; Text. Huge texts on pages, long sentences or the usage of too many (difficult) words in one speech bubble. This can cause a reader to loose interest because it's just 'too much'. Especially when not knowing what the story is about, and having to read endless explanations is something that personally turns me off.
Paneling/layouts can also be an issue. If there are too many panels on a page, or if the paneling is badly aligned, a page can look messy and confusing. Panels should guide the reader through a page, and if a page is leading the reader everywhere except the right direction, it gets confusing to understand. If a comic has issues with either the text and the paneling, it can give off a very displeasing look and feel, and it won't be very attracting to read.

>>90654862 >>90655890
There're a few reasons as to why I guess
>Buying followers
>A bigshot who put you in a spotlight or reblogged/mentioned your stuff
>Actually having a comic that's interesting enough to a lot of people
>Your drawing style is something that's popular right now and you're pulling it off very well

I've come up with the idea of a "suffering midwife" type of character for my comic, women forced to lug around giant bags of breast milk for the newborns they watch over, but I worry if I don't play my cards right it could go from dark and tragic world building to 2edgy, any of you guys have thoughts on the topic of avoiding edge shit while exploring a dark setting?
>>
>>90655903
>make the resolution at least 2500 pixels wide while working on it, ideally 3000+
>when you're done, shrink it to 1000 pixels wide.
Why?
I really don't know much about this sort of thing
>>

I haven't bought any followers (how do?) and I am pretty quiet online, really. I spend most my time drawing and reading.

Read some Dickens, or listen to audio books while you draw. 19th century London is as dark as it gets, but Dickens never shows any edge, really. He also remembers that there are decent and terrible people to be found in all walks of life. That last point is key. Kindness exists everywhere, even in hell.

because if you try working smaller than that, your lines will look shitty and it'll be really hard to do a good job. you'll be in this limbo between pixel art and good lineart, and all your mistakes will be glaring
and because the display size is limited on people's monitors. shrinking it down hides a lot of your rough edges

'Midwife' probably isn't the word you're after; a midwife helps deliver babies. A wetnurse was a woman who was hired to breastfeed someone else's baby (for whatever reason).

Also, your illustration reminded me of the statues of Artemis Ephesia, who was depicted with multiple breasts.

My friend and I are starting work on a few webcomics. I have a few writers contributing including myself, but I'm the only artist. It's all just free from our hearts, and to build a portfolio for pitching to real comic publishers.

Are there actually amateur colorists and letterers who would contribute to these comics at no monetary compensation? And know how to keep a schedule. Where would I even find them?

It's not a "hiring you for colors" deal, its a "hey, we're starting from the bottom and creating comics from scratch, come join in for the ride"

From what I have on my draft, it's very likely that the peak power level possible in my setting would be seen halfway into the first arc; the following arcs would have characters applying Rude Goldberg logic to much weaker powers in an attempt to reach that power level's impact.

Thanks for the pointers, but I don't want her to look too neotenized. She's supposed to look youthful, but not like a child. Plus, her friend, the gremlin boy I posted, is supposed to have a very child-like face himself, and I feel it would be a little much for them to both have childish faces.

Also, here's a subway psa ad I made for a background. I understand why graphic design is it's own job separate from just drawing because I am terrible at this.

yeah that can work okay, you just have to think guerilla. a lot of /m/shit has stories where the big giant deadly machines are not taken out by similarly huge and deadly machines from the opposite faction, but by the little critters nobody gave any thought to, who work things out juuust right to hit the death star right in its exhaust port.

it's worth a shot, but if everyone loves that character it might suck if he stays dead
i had this idea for a character who's borrowing another's power and frequently talking to that person, who's trapped in some object or another dimension or whatever, and slowly learning how to use it.. and then at some climactic moment they're released, so now the powers you've come to know and love are being used by their original owner again, and that first one now has to figure something else out. Kinda shades of Bleach but something more individual

>>90676037
It's a lot more than typing; lettering is an art. While setting the type is indeed part of the process, having knowledge and experience in the craft is the difference between simply typing in copy-pasted bubbles, and a letterer doing paid work for Image or the big 2.

There's still indeed an analog charm to hand-lettering, but most professional lettering is digital now due to deadlines and efficiency. And they do a lot more than just typing out the letters.

Here's a small idea for my webcomic. Tear it apart if something looks off.

A city will soon be devoured by an invading army from an ancient civilisation and they will reach said city in 6 months. Only a mad scientist and his robot companion has discovered the planned invasion. Although the mad scientist's robot companion is VERY strong, they need more to push them back. The good news is, the city he's from has the strength to take them on as they used to be the hub for champion metahumans. The bad news is, they are no longer united. The organisation they belonged to has become a laughing stock, and have been causing more trouble to the city than they have been helping it. Incidentally, said mad scientist does not have a good reputation with said champions. He decided that he needs to defeat them in order to obtain their powers, but his robot companion suggests that they should try uniting them instead.

Can we not act like Bones isn't an annoyance in these threads? He wouldn't be so bad if he had the patience to only post his completed works rather than 20 WIPs of every page, or even tried to take criticism. >>
>>90688786
what do you mean non-web format?
but yeah there's a lot of great short-length comics I could recommend if I could just remember them. We've had a few of them post here

What's so great about it?
>>
>>90689528
You got to fight a crazy thing you don't want in your life. Simple as that.
>>
>>90689046
As I see it, the only main difference would be that while you work in landscape, the anthology page would be portrait. If one of your pages is a 3x2 grid, then just make one 2x3.

Making comics is pretty much the same process no matter what the format. But find out what the anthology's page specifications are, and use that for the project, instead of sticking with doing your usual thing and trying to make it fit.
>>
>>90689720
>>90689046

Well I guess writing-wise would also be different, kind of like writing for a tv-series vs writing for an ad.
>>
>>90674766
That sounds pretty interesting.
I don't have a character that does that, though, but an EVA style light kaiju that is found on the verge of death and frankenstein-ed back to life to fight a much weaker artificial kaiju for a couple of minutes before dying.
For one, I don't like the idea of a plot device so I'm trying to make it a character of its own despite its inability to reciprocate most interaction, and for two, the idea that readers could get the impression that the story will be about kaiju or go back to them at some point when the point of that is about unleashing what would become the setting's magic system kind of has me worried.

To practice how I'd handle lineart variance and general composition for the comic I'm working on I tried drawing the same character in the same pose at 3 different distances from the "camera". The background is just something I threw together but I think this gave me a far better idea of how I'll be handling things.

If anyone has any advice for how I should practice doing backgrounds in a way that doesn't draw focus away from the characters I'd really appreciate some inspiration.

Ah. Thanks. I'll try to cut things shorter next time.

How the divided champions will be depicted in this story is kinda inspired what's going in the world atm. There's still villains, but the champions who used to fight them now have corroded morals who now only care about their pet political peeves than the big picture. As a result, they have been divided.

My question is, would it be too on the nose to base them on Marvel's current depiction of heroes or based them off drama that's happening on the net atm due to some Oompa Loompa becoming mayor or some shit?

And yes, Said mad scientist is motivated partly by hatred for said Champions for ruining his life, but his robot companion reckons he should let go and try to team up with some of them at least.

>>
>>90694497
Why would you want to imitate either of those shitshows? make it something actually interesting and believable, not something decided by committee
>>
>>90694719

Because some of them ARE good ideas as villains. Albeit unintentional. Besides, I only plan a few of the Champions to be potential friends to make.

Basically, said robot and her creator have different ideals on how they should approach power, and well what the robot wants is for the heroes to be united again and make friends, her creators would rather have them be upgrades for said robot instead because he believed they too far gone off the deep end to be any use.

Long spanning stories with a lot of relationships and worldbuilding?
Gag-a-day strips that are genuinely funny and don't try to push any political agenda?

Number one please. I really want to read more comics with characters who can charm me and lore I can theorize over.

Gag a day stuff is pleasant, but unless it's Perry Bible Fellowship tier, it probably won't stick with me.

I really don't enjoy comics that are just plotless threads of pretty images. If I wanted that I would be browsing Deviantart instead. If I'm reading a comic I want a plot, any plot, a bad one is better than none.

it's also not sexual just for being naked. with as many scandinavian-themed comics as we have here you'd think that concept would be a little more familiar.
>>
>>90703039
This nudity is just completely gratuitous though, there's really no reason for it to be there other than the artist wanting to draw a 15 year old girl naked.

>>
>>90703867
Ugh. The only thing worse than drawing something unacceptable is writing characters talking about it.
>>
>>90703867
>Also to talk about her genitals. It's weird.
It's the presentation of it that makes it especially uncomfortable.
Like, I have no problems with teens being portrayed as sexual beings, that's just a fact of life. I joked about dicks and tits all the time with my other female friends in high school. I honestly enjoy stories that that to portray teenage sexuality in an honest and intimate way, but that's really not what's happening with the 15 year old catgirl.
She just keeps getting naked and talking about cunnilingus out of no where, with no purpose/message attached. It just feels like the artist's inserting his personal fantasies into the story.
>>
>>90704205
a little context might help. she's supposed to be a 'wild child' sort with no filter, because she's more animal than human, her dad being a 3/4ths wolf werewolf and her mom being a cat transformed into a catgirl by a witch.. and she's been raised with her catwolf brother in a caravan, so she's not really in touch.
but on top of that she's feisty and gives no fucks. I guess the reason it doesn't come across as well anymore is that the more 'normal' characters have long since given up getting shocked by it
>>
>>90704205
>It just feels like the artist's inserting his personal fantasies into the story.
Well said, he even confirms it in the following post.
>>
>>90704425

Its kind of hard to get a read on that though, because every character seems to have the same wacky, non-sequitur personality, so she really doesn't stand out as someone out of touch, when they're all that way.
>>
>>90704597
they're ALL my personal fantasies, anon. even the boring ones. especially the boring ones
>>90704631
indeed. I've never had a good grasp on writing different personalities. and it doesn't help that the main culture of the setting is neither as uptight as ours nor as uptight as comedy japan or whatever. it's basically renaissancey fantasy shit. people bathe in rivers. fucks are given, but largely by the snootiest upper-class. that's why this little outing with Kaen (suggested, I believe, by someone in the threads?) was going to be a fun little contrast.. the prince guy who still blanches a bit.. yknow.. eh. whatever, it's almost over. i'll do better in the next comic.

Who cusses? Who says 'eff' instead of 'fuck?' Who uses proper grammar, and who uses improper grammar and then corrects themself? Does your character have any consonant sounds they trip up on? Does your character say "it's a dog eat dog world" or "its a doggydog world?"

Since comics are visual consider also what your characters are doing with their hands. Some people touch their faces a lot. Some people pat their conversational partner on the shoulder a lot. Some people shrug a lot.

ok guys GGZ episode 1/chapter 1 is finished!

After I made the last page I went pack and drew in missing stuff like pieces to outfits, and colored stuff that i forgot to color in, and even painted in some new backgrounds here and there! So not only is it finished but its fixed and repaired as well!

its a total of 41 pages long including the cover page, so 40 actual pages of panels and story and you can read it on:

-comic fury: http://ggz.thecomicseries.com/
-taptastic: https://tapastic.com/episode/623701
-linewebtoons: http://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/ggz/introductions/viewer?title_no=66734&episode_no=1
-the duck webcomics: http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/GGZ/
-tumblr: https://gothgrillz.tumblr.com/

this episode of GGZ was called "introductions" and it introduced the goth girls, the next chapter is called "relationships"(working title) and it establishes all the romantic relationships of each character.

also now that its done i can reveal a big behind the scenes secret, the is a crown shape hidden on each of the main goth girls, weather it be there hair or hairband or something else, this signifies that they are both drama queens and goth queens! awww yeah!

Rebecca sugar did this with her main SU characters by having a star symbol on each of them signifying they where both the stars of the show and from outerspace, star people, yeah... show still kind of sucks and i only watch it for my waifu peridot, shes the only good thing about the show to be honest
>>
>>90710902

note: its going to take a while to replace all the pages on comic fury and the duck but all changes and fixes have been done on taptastic and linewebtoons!

ha, my ocd makes it so hard to write bad grammar or malapropism even when I want to. I actually had Hel use some vocabulary once and wrote a note under her saying "Hel doesn't actually know this word" but there's no other way to say it
ooooh body language. that's a great idea!! thanks. God I'm an idiot for mostly ignoring that so far
>>90709168
completely true. I never know how to write my own body language in real life either
>>
>>90713840
add enough detail to make it look cool but not so much that it's hard to draw and you never keep it consistent
>>
>>90713840
Make sure you have an idea for the overall aesthetic of your cast's clothing, is it haute couture, 80's fantasy anime-esque, 2000's scene kid fashion, golden age superhero costumes?
Get lots of references, both photos of real outfits (if you're trying to depict realistic clothing) and other fictional interpretations. Don't be afraid to make outfits that looks a little weird, that's what makes an outfit look memorable and unique. Keep in mind how a character's personality factors into their costume too.
Don't go overboard on colors and patterns, less is more. Don't go overboard on details, an outfit needs areas that are blank/simple to help the details stand out.
>>
eyy Facundo, you around?
>>
>>90714763
It's not bad grammar if a character has their own internal grammar. Give yourself some stricter rules for each character's personal voice so that your ocd goes off when you violate the rule.

Avoid phonetically spelling out accents though, nobody likes to read that.

Consider also that we talk differently in different contexts. Just like Japanese has formal and informal verbs, there are lots of things you would say to your wife that you wouldn't say to your mom
>>
>>90718517
Oh like when you're writing fanfic/greentext and you try to preserve their individual mannerisms.. that makes sense
next time I make a new character Ima write down a bunch of sample dialogues to establish their vocal character. I feel like I could do it for all but two of my characters right now, the ones who aren't the straightman. but apparently it doesn't come across well and I know I'm not consistent with it. Because I don't use them when I'm actually writing out the scripts really.
>>
>>90718631

I think you should also just think more about how the character's actual personality is and that will relate to how they talk.

Even within comedy, there's a way to deliver it to the reader without everyone spitting out one-liners and puns constantly. With everyone doing the same thing, none of them have any real definitive personality, and you really can't describe them other than what they look like and what their profession is. Which is generally considered not good.
>>
>>90718631
I suggest picking a grammatically correct sample sentence (hello, my name is blank and my favorite food is blank) and then rewrite it as each character (hey guys I'm blank and I love blank)

Drawing their face first might help get into their mindset
>>
>>90680041

Writing a synopsis or a description of your story idea should always be 1. Short 2.clear 3. Include who, what and how.

Define the Goal and the Obstacle.

Short version: A mad scientist must unite the people of his city in order to fight invaders.

Because that's it. I know, there's the robot sidekick and there's the in-fighting among the city, but: from your description, I don't see what the purpose of these story elements are in relation to the goal. The city : why is it hard to convince them about the threat? Why not just present them the evidence? Is there a civil war? Why? Is there an antagonist plotting to hide the truth? Why?
What is the OBSTACLE more specifically?

OK so the robot: apatently he is an impact character who guides the mad scientist so he doesn't use violence to save the city. Correct? What is their relationship? Why does the robot care? Is he the moral compass? Why does the mad scientist want to obtain their powers instead of uniting them? Is there an understandable, relatable motivation we could understand, even root for, to oppose the robot's view about uniting the city?
>>
>>90718779
That's good advice, but I definitely think about their personality a lot. Maybe even too much. It's the execution, actually USING that knowledge that I think I'm failing at. What do you think I should change vis-a-vis the comedy? because... lately all I can write is lame puns and exchanges that I think are clever, and wrote down in a notepad doc years ago, looking for an opportunity to use.

I do think it worked better in the original comic because they were all more extreme (vice guy, dumb guy, airhead girl, frazzled wannabe villain, uptight jerk, sarcastic smart kid, and two princesses), this cast is way too sensible, with just two kinda dumb ones (one of which is feisty and street smart and the other airheaded), three responsible adults (Two normies and one kinda chill aunt type), a smart one who's a little brittle emotionally, and a guy who is basically the token male, existing to say guy things and find girls hot.
The plan for the next iteration of the comic is to pare it the fuck down and get back to basics: debonair guy, goth chick, airhead chick, and smart kid who may or may not be kinda emotional. haven't decided yet. trying not to put the car before the horse.

>>90718812

oh hey unrelated but... now that I've started including the ear detail, it occurs to me that I've been leaving out the tragus on elf/fairy type ears, instead just exposing the meatus. should I keep doing that, or should they have a tragus? my japanese animes tend to make a small tragus and a large meatus that it barely covers, but in 99% of the hairstyles I draw, that tragus would be covered.

Thank you. I've been waiting for a post like this. This really helps. I needed someone to help dissect an idea for holes.

Okay, I'll try to expand this further.

Why it's hard is because his reputation kinda makes it impossible for people to listen to him. He USED to be in said Champion organisation as their tech man, up until a scandal that destroyed his reputation because they threw him under the bus. Coupled with the fact some of the lower ranked champions decided to kick him while his down by destroying his lab gleefully to make themselves look good. ("heroes fighting evil mad scientist" look.) Yes, there's a civil war among the champions, which eroded public view of them. They're used to their bs by now, but they clearly dislike them. It's kinda like a more antagonistic versions of the heroes from The Tick. Long story short, the mad scientist's slandered bad reputation makes him a "target on sight" by the other Champions. This in turn also makes him VERY VERY bitter. Which is why he only sees the other Champions as potential powerups for his combat robot.

Speaking of said combat robot, it/she was made to defeat them specifically. He was in a darker place at the time. Before he could use it/her to full power, something happened to that robot that caused it to become self aware. He kept upgrading its memory capacity to find new ways to defeat its enemies, until he accidentally created proper AI. The robot's very nice to the creator because it remembers every good deed he did to her stored in her memory, even down to the stuff he does to others (that aren't the champions who fucked him over at least). The robot learned goodness from him, even though he never intended it. The robot wants to unite the city's champions primarily because she believes they needs friends, and it would be a waste to see good potential flushed down the toilet.

Does this help? Feel free to comment.

Very nice use of black/white, especially with that spot of yellow you have with the moose. Your art style is very charming, I like the simple Animal Crossing-like character design. Trust me if you keep at it, you'll get there.
>>
>>90728014
these are still ending up a little flattened, though at least 3d flattened, like pillow shapes. Why don't you try doing some nice thick spheres ands tuff for a while? draw some pokeballs, draw some pumpkins
>>
>>90728030
So you don't think it looks more like fur or fungus than grass?
In any case, it's good that he has multiple points of input. One of the great things about these threads

Agreed, this grass could look much more simplified. You COULD draw every single blade of grass if you wanted to, but if you did that, it could be best to keep them looking crisp. When you start getting loose and messy with your lines, it turns into fur. Even then, I don't think you should just draw every blade of grass here. It's just grass in this field and a few flowers, there's little variation. You can draw a few detailed stalks and a few looser stalks and the viewer can extrapolate from there. Drawing every leaf works best when you have more foliage/environmental variation like in pic related.

A lot of it is mental rather than motor. A lot of it is stepping back and putting your mind to something else for a while before mulling over your work. A lot of it is being willing to make a lot of mistakes and take chances.

And a whole fuckload of it is just putting in the time and being willing to deal with the fact that it doesn't come easy.

Looking at that sketch, though, you're having trouble grasping form, and a lot of that is probably because you keep drawing things very similarly. Go crazy! Draw one of those faces from above! From below! From a weird diagonal! Try to understand these faces from a three dimensional perspective and act on it! Flail about and fail and try again and again!

Oh ok, I guess I can ditch the whole idea all together than..
>>
>>90728476
Eh just put it away in the think bank for a while.

To add to this. I don't necessarily want said mad scientist to be a pure innocent lamb (Let's face it, if he were, he wouldn't BE a mad scientist) but let's just say it's a dick getting fucked over by assholes. And the dick wants revenge against said assholes. (but thanks to his own heart and his robot's kindness, he doesn't really want to kill them.)
>>
>>90728288
oh yeah and I was going to mention earlier, if it's very LONG grass, it justifies more hairiness. the longer a blade of grass is, the more poorly it maintains its relatively stiff integrity
>>
>>90728581
this. there are no bad ideas, only bad execution. sit on it, think about it, maybe someday you'll find a way to really make it roll
>>
>>90631302
I think in the last panel, "None of it matters" is the more correct way to say that
>>
>>90656224
I think one important difference between something being "dark" and something being "edgy" is that edginess is unrealistic cruelty. The point to make your villains sympathetic has been said to death, but more importantly try and give everyone a reasonable but legitimately troubling situation (appropriate to the setting)
>>
>>90729133
>>90656224
Hold on, maybe "reasonable" isn't the correct word here, since your setting is clearly really dark and dystopian. I guess what I mean is that the setting won't work as well if the villains are all clearly evil and the heroes are all clearly good. Make the midwife appropriately depressed, lethargic, and crabby, but the difficulty is in balancing that with likeability
>>
>>90713840
Like previous posters said, make sure your costume isn't over-designed. I think designing a costume around a specific theme can lead to some really creative choices, and also looking at fashion relevant to your setting is really helpful
>>
>>90729133
I'd say it's not so much the unrealistic aspect, more like the way it takes you right out of the moment. darkness should evoke sad emotion in the reader, whereas edginess makes the reader give up on the story as pure unpleasantness that will never let up or have any depth
>>
>>90693784
in the last speech bubble, "since" should be changed to "sense"
>>
>>90729369
rare to see the mistake going in that direction. if there was any doubt he's trolling

Did that thing coldfusion did, the characters saying the same sentence, but in there way. It was a fun little exercise.

god dammit you're way better than me at this. teneleven points

It's all about contrast in personality.
>>
>>90731990
I've gotten so lazy. everyone's just chill all the time. I mean their adventure is almost over, so by this time they OUGHT to have matured a little, but contrast and especially conflict is so much more fun. I actually have written down 'include more conflict' but it's hard to think of any that isn't just artificial
nyoh well.

remaking the cover page because the current cover page characters dont look anything like the characters in the actual panels

it was because i was going to make this a super cartoony comic book but nobody liked it on here so i made a new style that i think looks a lot better anyway that everyone seems to like now

I'm probably going to look at this page in the morning and have to correct a lot of mis-tilted hips and Tony's ridiculous stork legs

I have many questions and doubts, help me!

I started a webcomics now for 2 months update 3-4 times a week (so they are not only 2 update 1 a month).
My main goal was to get "visibility" and then obtain even some commision to raise some money while also working in a comic book for future publication with a publisher so 0 money now.

I've uploaded to the various webtoon / tapastic / tumblr / etc sites the results are minimal will be like 100 subscripter if we eliminate bots or other, the active and commenting etc. are maybe 4-5 and obviously nobody had required commision.

-I should also create a personal Web site?
-If yes I would bring more users with various top webcomics charts etc. (currently not used)?
-With the web site and AD i can get something at least to gain the cost of the domain?

or

-I have to close all, the time used will never be "paid off" and use the time for submission to editor?

Sorry for any language mistakes
