As a father and uncle, I've come to realize that diversity in comics only truly matters if you're a child. Children idolize heroes, they want to "be" those heroes. My 5 year-old black niece told me her favorite superhero (at the time) was Wonder Woman. I didn't have a problem with that, WW is probably the most advertised heroine out there. That said I do wish she was played by an asian actress. That said, Scartoko is pretty bad. Not because muh diversity, but because it's just kinda cringeworthy and it makes for a main character that doesn't fit the setting she's in. It's not bad because of diversity, it's bad because it's jarringly apparent that the film has sacrificed believability and realistic worldbuilding for the sake of appeasing Americans. Who, really, will relate to any character of any race if that character is well-written and enjoyable to watch.

It's not even true diversity. When touting diversity it's mostly racial and not ethnicities. Half of the characters are from New York. What's diverse about that? At least Sam Alexander Nova is from a different state. You go to Puerto Rico or Nicaragua where my folks are from. Pick a neighborhood and you'll see folks of different colors, but most of those people well eat the same foods, grow up with the same stories, and so on. Different in skin color, but not culture.

I work at one and here's how we pick our manga.

We have the usual suspects some from Shonen Jump and a couple classics that are recommended.The big problem with manga is shelf space and later volumes not selling it's easy to pick up vol 1 but vol 17? So we focus in on manga that has buzz and pick up the first two volumes. If people want the rest we set up a special order for them or a sub. We also do some minor anime merch but it's all either Gundam, Sailor Moon or Dragonball because those tend have consistent people in the area who like it and we know it's not really a risk.
