The ones I know for sure are understudies are the JD actor and Chandler's actress.

I like the girl on the soundtrack way more, but the understudy actually makes her sound like a teenage girl, and sounds like Chandler from the movie, which is also good, too.

Animation and puppets work well for musicals because audiences are more likely to accept people bursting into song in naturally surrealist mediums. This is why musicals have trouble transitioning from stage to screen, because believing that you're not watching a play already takes way more suspension of belief than believing that the movie you're watching isn't a recording of actual events.

I think if a hand-drawn animated musical based on a Broadway show were made and given a wide release, it would simultaneously revive hand-drawn animation and adult-oriented animation. There's no way something with the marquee value of a Broadway show wouldn't attract an audience. I've seen the film a couple of times but never knew there was a musical up until a few days ago. I watched it for the first time and now I'm obsessed. The movie is a good adaptation - it has direct lines, scenes, and etc. from the play script. Plus Winona and Slater look so good together. They have chemistry on screen. As for differences, there are no songs and Martha Dunstock/Dumptruck isn't Heather's friend but someone that goes to their school. I definitely recommend watching it.

Jeff Wayne owns the rights to a musical version (and merchandising) of The War Of The Worlds, even with the book out of copyright. So I don't think it can happen still.
I know that the Wells estate turned a blind eye to most things relating to TWotW, because they were pretty cool, but Jeff Wayne has gotten into several legal battles over the musical and merch before, including with Paramount trying to make merch of the film.
