This sort of thing always seems so hamfisted to me. It was already pretty clear that he was using manipulative language. And I can't help but read the intention of the author into hamfisted writing, which seems to be "lol he's just like those extremists IRL you dislike". It turns a good villain moment into something lazy immediately.

Because when you get down to it, suicide bombers tend to be a cultural product, and the most prolific suicide bombing societies we can name are islamic extremists and Japanese kamikaze pilots. In fact, the Japanese have had a massive emphasis on honorouable suicide for years. It also used to be known in the West. The thing is, suicide attacks require a collectivistic outlook, as you're quite literally sacrificing yourself for the common good of your people. So American malcontents suddenly turning into suicide bombers doesn't compute, especially not when Skull is still partly appealing to their individualistic desires.

That makes it clunky writing. Maybe if the transition had been less jarring, it could have worked. But then it would have to be an entire issue about someone joining a cause for his own reasoning, and unbeknowst to himself (until the end) have that subverted for an ideal he is not a part of. And that would have been great.

A much better approach of this subject matter is in an episode of Stargate, where a suicide attack is the final nail in the coffin of a group of free Jaffa who seem increasingly iffy as the episode goes on, and it turns out their leader is secretly a Goa'uld who is manipulating them for his own gain. But that's 45 minutes of television, and not two or three pages.

Either way, these writing mistakes make Red Skull seem more reasonable and more skilled than he's intended to be.
