I say 'used to be' because there hasn't been a 'Crystal Gems fight Gem Monsters' episode in a while now and Steven has already unlocked abilities to bubble himself, produce a shield, make healing spit, affect his own gravity, and fuse with humans/gems. I've watched both shows in the OP in their entirety. The few episodes that follow Jack when he was a kid, learning what he needed to become the warrior he is for the series, feels realer and more genuine than what Steven Universe hamfistedly shoves in the audience's face.

Steven never experienced true loss, he's the embodiment of 'first world problems' for a protagonist and in good chunk of SU. He struggles but his 'suffering' amounts to pressure and crossed feelings about his mother what the Crystal Gems were.

He completely loses the damn scope that this whole thing is about protecting Earth (everything living on it) from the looming threats left by the Gems that had been trying to ruin everything for thousands of years. 'He's a kid' is a shitty argument for why this scope doesn't even exist. Kids can internalize serious topics fine, they aren't little delicate dolls that have to be sheltered from reality.

I would argue that fucking Steven's more of a Mary Sue than Jack is.

Jack has gotten fucked over several times, including EVERY SINGLE TIME he tried to complete his quest to go back to the past and kill Aku. Everyone he ever loved is long dead, almost everyone and everything wants him killed in the future, and the few exceptions are going to get erased from the timeline if he ever obtains his goal. On top of that, as of season 5 in a perpetual limbo in which he does not age, and with Aku in the hiding from him and him having lost his sword, he has to live until he either gets back the sword and kills Aku or gets killed.

Steven, on the other hand? He's going to talk down EVERYONE. He talked down Peridot, he talked down Lapis, he talked down THE FUCKING CLUSTER, and he's obviously gonna talk down Jasper. Sugar's has already said that the show doesn't have villains, so seeing how the Diamonds also have the same emotional bullshit as the CG's they'll be also talked down.
What has Steven actually lost? He has a loving father that spended every cent he had on him, he's raised by three actual aliens that teach him and train him and take him out to these awesome missions, he has his girlfriend who is also part of the Crystal Gems, he's friends with the fucking Mayor for fuck's sake. His only actual problems are things that he either accept or WILL find a solution, like Jasper's corruption on Bismuth's emprisionment. Jack is great, if not the best, at everything he does and learns. The only thing he fucks up is his ultimate goal to kill Aku, but everything else he is just the best at. Again, that's not a bad thing by default, anon. Jack is a great character and I definitely like him more than Steven.

Steven couldn't be further from a Mary Sue anon. He's the worst at everything compared to any one of his peers, including Connie, except at being diplomatic. But that's the point I was making. In my eyes, Jack is a Mary Sue, but I don't find him to be a bad character. But then again "Mary Sue" has nearly lost all meaning, especially when people try to make the case that the useless fuckboi Steven is a Mary Sue.

And I never made the case that because Steven is bad at things, that makes him a good character. I like the transformation he went through, from the character that made me drop the show for months, to now being a character I'm quite fond off.

I could make the case as to why nobody thought of trying diplomacy, but that's besides the point. I just like how his solution to conflict is to sit down and work out the problem through diplomacy.

They're two totally different characters.

Samurai Jack is pretty much the ultimate badass. He's a master of every form of combat, able to defeat whole armies single-handedly. Only the most powerful and deady foes pose a real threat to him. The greatest evil in the universe has to run and hide because Jack would kill him in a straight fight. He's just that badass. It's kind of the point of his character.

In Steven Universe, no one is the ultimate badass. That's kind of the point of the show. Some of the Gems have awesome powers, incredible skills, and thousands of years of experience, but none of them are invincible, no matter how much they might look like it. They all have their flaws, their insecurities, their moments of weakness where they need others to support them. No one is so great and perfect that they don't need anyone else.

Honeslty, I don't really see Jack or Steven as really comparable since one deals with the struggles of an adult and the other a teen - a mentally retarded, canonically emotionally stunted teen, but a teen nonetheless.

However if there's one lesson SU could take from Jack, it's that if you're going to insist that your story be relegated to only perspective of your main character, you better make sure that the setting and characters surrounding that character are strong enough to be able to carry viewer interest. Jack as a character was serviceable on his own, but what made him fun was all the weird settings and the colorful side characters & villains he met. SU kinda had that, but with a lot of rather bland/unlikeable side characters getting more focus than they really should, bland townie episodes when the show decides it's gonna halt to plot to fart around for a bit, and Steven at times feeling completely un-invested in the stakes they show presents, the fact that they insist on limiting the show to Steven's perspective seems to hinder it more than it helps.

It pisses me off that faggots will try to compare SJ and SU like SU is even close to SJ's level, where in reality SU belongs in the fucking garbage.
