While the less-than-subtle meta stuff didn't always hit home, I think the heavy handed nature of Ronaldo's ego was probably what annoyed people the most (I just watched one reaction where the guy was FURIOUS about the episode which was pretty funny in and of itself). Even Steven reached his breaking point, and it feels like that's as far as Ronaldo can go in terms of being "the random weird guy". I don't think having aliens be a carbon copy of human beings is necessary for them to be relatable. Done correctly through observations by human characters or just through examples aliens that are never really given any real dialogue can be shown to parallel humans. Two examples of this I personally like come from stupid action movie schlock of all things: Battle Los Angeles and Battleship. The first draws comparison between the marines being sent to fight the invading aliens who at first are shown as ominous presence, attacking unseen and being nigh invincible. It's once they start seeing their enemy and how they behave in manners that are similar to the way they do things that they realize the aliens aren't so different down on the ground.
The second was Battleship which didn't do so through third party observation, but by showing it to the audience and having them interpret what they see. On the surface it appears to be a standard alien invasion flick, but there are subtleties in the way the aliens behave that make them very human like. They're shown to respond to force only with the level of force directed at them, look out for their own soldiers during a rescue showing that they're not just mindless drones who are expendable, and do not just mindlessly attack everything and instead target key areas of defense and infrastructure.
While I'm not saying that any of these approaches would be good for SU, in fact I'm certain they wouldn't, they are possibilities and people shouldn't be afraid of making aliens in their work a little more alien.
