It's a pretty good video. I didn't know all that stuff about the inspiration from The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon, and it's extremely obvious once you've seen the footage comparison. Very cool.

I disagree with your criticism of the simplistic character designs. Or design, I should say. The only one you really criticize is that once scientist, and you said it yourself. His design was supposed to be simplistic. The scientist was little more than a plot device to enable Jack to fight the Ultra Bots, and even if it wasn't, in a show that was responsible for THOUSANDS of creative character designs, just one of them not being up to snuff doesn't even bare mentioning.

Your only other criticism is about the disparity between storyboard and final product, but there's a lot that goes on between those stages, and storyboards are quickly sketched with little regard to fitting in with the style of the show. I agree that Aku's expressions in some of those would have certainly fit right in, but this just feels like nitpicking, since even you pointed out that the final scene could just as easily improve on the storyboard. The end product could always be different, but what we got in all of these cases wasn't bad at all. I'm certain there are a number of storyboard images where Jack is horrifically off-model. It would be hard to make the case that things should always look more like the storyboard, and to nitpick is kind of pointless. To call it a flaw is just plain silly.

So ultimately, what we've learned from your video is that Samurai Jack is a great show, and has no flaws. Awesome.

My criticism WASN'T "the show should look like the storyboards", the storyboards are sometimes just scribbles. My point was those Aku drawings in particular weren't as good as they could have been and I had the storyboard as proof. I called it nit-picking myself and once again I did NOT say they should just animate over the storyboards like in Steven Universe. I praised the use of skilled animation directors too later on so why would I do that if I was a "storyboard is king" type.

I brought up three designs that I thought were either generic, crappy or unfitting for the tone of the scene.

I have a fuckton of Jack caps so I'm not saying the show is always stiff or whatever; nowhere near that. I'm just saying there are times when it is and kids might draw influence from that when learning to draw "Jack-style" instead of the good stuff, simply because it looks easier to draw.

I think that when doing a study, if you wanna explore this pose I'd recommend drawing the storyboard pose over the colored one because the lower one has a better more natural flow thanks to the eyes not being perfectly symmetrical and the leh not being segmented away from the body

I've not finished my marathon yet but so far, some stand-outs off the top of my head:

Blind Archers: amazing synchronization of sound, music and animation. amazing evocative imagery when Jack goes blind.

Chicken Jack: expected it to be a stupid lame comedy episode, instead it had some of the most creative and pleasantly violent combat in the show

Jack and the Monks: fucking poetic as shit. the Monks were amazing in voice, animation, art, everything and the whole ride had a haunting yet motivational feeling.

I began rewatching a few episodes recently as it's been probably a good decade since I last saw any, and like many others I figured the impending final season was a good excuse.

I cannot express my unbridled happiness and excitement when each episode was just as good as I remember it being. Sometimes better since I better understand some of the nuances now, or can better appreciate the emotion in some scenes.

I'm a mecha/toku fan, and I love Genndy's work, but for some reason I just can't get into Titan. It's well animated, but the story and the characters honestly do little for me. Also, for as big a fan as Genndy is of the genre, all the monsters feel extremely generic and uninspired.

You can see elements of Symbionic Titan in "Robot Samurai vs. Mondo Bot" and "Jack and the Flying Prince and Princess," but both of those episodes are far better than all of Titan to me.

Can you blame them? Samurai Jack was a beloved show when it aired and to see it be revived with almost all the essential creative team behind it returning is something that almost never happens. Honestly all I want is a Teen Titans 2003 verse movie that takes place 2-3 years after the ending that just shows them going on with their lives. Robin becomes Nightwing, Cyborg joins the Justice League, Starfire is hotter, Raven and Beast Boy are basically Kid Flash and Artemis from YJ.

I kind of believed this, but there seemed to be a decent number of times Aku genuinely tried to kill Jack, and was thwarted. The graveyard episode has Aku with Jack at his mercy, and he tries to stab Jack in the chest, with the sword, and if the sword wasn't an embodiment of the virtue and will of the human spirit, it would have worked.

Ok so I've been binge watching the series and this might be cringey but this part kinda caught me by surprise. I'm well aware this frog guy was an "essence" or whatever, but that was actual blood (even with a red tint) that spurted out when he stabbed him. I'm just surprised the censors let it slip when they were so petty about blood and made Genndy resort to oil.

I'd bet half of my money that the daughters of Aku are not there just for one episode and that they're going to be an arc. As well as Jack being without his sword. Just keep in mind that SJ never had quick pacing, and the first episode will probably be Jack mostly walking around some caves, riding on a motorcycle and doing other irrelevant things for 15 minutes, then he fights someone, THEN something relevant starts happening, and it's cut by "To be continued".

He's pretty weak. I thought he was pretty bad filling in for Iroh, and I assumed they only used him because they were desperate, but it turns out he's the go-to guy for Mako impersonation.

However, you can never replace a voice actor with someone trying to do an imitation. It always comes off as phony-sounding. It might seem like heresy, but the best thing to do would be to completely recast Aku without the agenda of making him sound like Mako. Find another authentic-sounding Japanese VA with his own style, who is actually a good actor in his own right. Then lampshade the fact that Aku's voice is different by making a joke or something. Or don't mention it at all.

What we get wouldn't be Mako, but it could be something worth appreciating in its own right, unlike Greg Baldwin's voice, which is just a terrible impersonation and does nothing but constantly remind us that he's not Mako, despite the fact they'd like us to think he is.

I think that Sym-Bionic Titan was poised to be better, had it not been cancelled after 20 episodes, but as it stands Jack is definitely his best work, as long as the new season doesn't somehow soil it.
