Eh, what they usually do is find a band and pay them to write a single for the OP. And then often make a music video that's completely unrelated to the song.

Usually this is an actual band, and the band takes credit, etc.

With Western stuff they find an artist or composer, and then create a jingle specifically for the OP and that's all.

There's a clear difference in the two because the OP in Japanese shit is actually music in the form that we tend to digest, like from an album.

Whereas stuff for cartoons isn't.

For instance, a lot of people say that Samurai Jack's OP is great. And it is, but when you isolate the part that was made by will.i.am "Gotta get back, etc." it's just the same repeating lyrics and chords. It's a jingle, not a song.

Same goes for say, The Big Guy and Rusty opening. That's a big, propaganda piece that tells a story, and isn't music in the same way Cowboy Bebop, or One Punch Man's opening is.

These are two big ones that anime openings, while usually impressively animated, don't fucking do in the least. It's all just cutesy fanservice animation set to a pop song that usually has nothing to do with the show at all.

The MIB cartoon opening is a masterclass in a great opening. It shows you everything you need to know without a single word, and the animation is top-notch, AND the song gets stuck in your head. It's flawless.

The soundtrack album for The Mysterious Cities of Gold, which is big, only got leased in France.

The soundtrack albums for He-Man and Voltron got released after at least 20 years when the shows were on the air.

ATLA, which had a lot music, doesn't have an album. It seems there won't be soundtrack album for the Thundercats.

Agreed. Most anime openings are a lot more obtuse. A lot of them will feature content or structure related very closely to the show, but in such a convoluted way that you'd have to know the content of the show already before it would offer a takeaway. It's the same idea that makes so many book-readers love Harry Potter movies or Hunger Games movies: they've experienced it once before, and now that they know, seeing the familiar and the iconic and recognizing the elements that made the source material great makes them feel smart and a part of a class of people who are above the average viewer (even if the average viewer is easily capable of doing this anyway).

Most anime openings just deliver on an emotional premise that, while useful for getting into the mood of the show that follows, rarely strikes a clear tone because so much of it uses licensed pop songs instead of tailored musical experience. This wasn't always the case: in fact, it wasn't even the norm for a long time, but it is now, and now the vast majority of anime openings suffer this problem.

Like you pointed out, the MIB opening does all of these exceptionally well and sacrifices nothing.
