Even if they had made Connie the protagonist they would have still written her to be more like Steven and not ask questions for the majority of the show to help preserve the slow burn. Fusions are a good idea that are just poorly executed in general, if not mostly due to the fact that two of the three CG fusions are voiced by celebrities (I forget who voices Opal but I'm pretty sure it's not someone who actually works for the show), and the third is between two characters who are awkward together.

Also, at least with how it's been handled so far, fusions are never really their own person, besides Sardonyx. Opal is kinda just a second pearl, Sugilite was just a more destructive Garnet, Malachite was just Lapis and Jasper fighting over control of one body, Alexandrite is obviously just Pearl and Garnet and Amethyst sharing a body. Smoky Quartz at least comes kinda close to being her own character, but even then she's just an amalgamation of Steven and Amethyst's lack of self confidence. And lastly, Garnet is just a boring tool they use to either "warn Steven/the CGs about something (even though they usually ignore her)" or "explain something about fusion". Ruby and Sapphire are both such better characters and it's a great shame that we can't just have them as main characters instead of the emotionless statue the two fuse into.
