>U.S. Avengers #1 topped the charts in a month that saw Marvel offer retailers a free 10% overship on its titles. This is reflected when dollar rankings (which you can sort by below) are compared with what we might expect those rankings to have been by multiplying unit sales by cover price; fully 84 of Marvel's 91 entries in the Top 300 have dollar rankings that are worse than we'd expect to see had all their copies all shipped at their regular discounts.

>Another result of the extra copies was that Marvel's unit share was six points higher than its dollar share. Overall, the addition resulted in 7.57 million copies being shipped in the month, the highest figure than for any January since January 1997.

Does Marvel really need comics to be profitable? I was Disney and was feeling pretty evil, I would just burn a million to completely murder DC: I would do a nostalgia-driven soft-reboot of everything (which they're supposedly already doing) but I would drop the prices of every single comic to one buck. I would murder DC on price alone. Once DC is driven out of the industry, I would just rise prices again.

Marvel seems to use the Collector Corps box and other subscription boxes for their new titles, which get included in the Diamond charts, so it's a matter of checking what comics got included in these boxes and comparing them to what their chart numbers are.

Honestly though not much to say. Rebirth is losing steam but there's some upcoming crossovers and events that might help. Once they reveal Manhattan that will give them a boost. Snyder and Capullo are loved outside of /co/ so their event should be a success if it hits their usual quality.

Marvel is crashing hard but the overshipping and constant events that casuals love is keeping them treading water. We'll see if Generations helps or hurts.

More than that. MARVEL Comics is an IP farm. A throwaway comic character like say, X-23 or Jess Jones could become a multi million dollar asset. The next Marvel blockbuster could be based on an arc like say Old Man Logan.

Keeping the comics allows them to continue to get ideas for a profit. And Marvel still turns a profit, if not much of one.

Also any attempt to farm out would raise issues of ownership. No major creator working at a third party company wants to waste original ideas and characters on something they won't own.

The industry won't collapse, LCS just will have to sell more merchandising. DC still tries to make good books but Marvel just doesn't give a fuck anymore and it's a full blown IP farm just testing characters for other markets. Legacy characters? That wasn't because of diversity, that was to add them to the MCU or the netflixverse or whatever

They'll keep going but the times of the industry being independent and people making a living out of good stories instead of toy commercials are gone

Share of Units in Top 300 is the relevant number for on-going series since literally every on-going by Marvel and DC are in the top 300 and those are what were overshipped.
