>U.S. Avengers #1 topped the charts in a month that saw Marvel offer retailers a free 10% overship on its titles. This is reflected when dollar rankings (which you can sort by below) are compared with what we might expect those rankings to have been by multiplying unit sales by cover price; fully 84 of Marvel's 91 entries in the Top 300 have dollar rankings that are worse than we'd expect to see had all their copies all shipped at their regular discounts.

>Another result of the extra copies was that Marvel's unit share was six points higher than its dollar share. Overall, the addition resulted in 7.57 million copies being shipped in the month, the highest figure than for any January since January 1997.

>Graphic novel sales were off considerably in a month in which the number of new releases was down. The first major wave of Rebirth-era graphic novels topped the charts; an additional 5% discount was offered to retailers on those titles, impacting their dollar rankings.

Blog post: http://blog.comichron.com/2017/02/january-2017-comics-sales-estimates.html

>So with the 10% overship in the charts, is there any point in trying to reverse-engineer the actual sales — sort of the reverse of what could be done with DC's returnable titles to find out how many copies shipped? Ultimately, I don't think it changes enough to be relevant — and, in fact, it's not as straightforward in the overship case. While some seem to think all you need to do to arrive at the original "sold" number of copies is to subtract 10% from the total, that's not the right approach.

>Leaving aside that to get back to a number to which 10% has been added you must subtract 9.0909%, remember that comics are whole units that can't be carved up into fractions. A 10% match on a 10-copy order is one copy, for sure — but on an order of, say, 14 copies, an additional copy will only be a 7% match, while on a 19-copy order, if it isn't rounded up to two copies, an extra will only be a 5% match. It's not the case that half would be over and half would be under, cancelling out such effects, because the number of copies ordered isn't normally distributed (no pun intended). Retailers are more likely to have ordered a single copy on some books than to have ordered nine.

Interesting read, from http://blog.comichron.com/2017/02/january-2017-comics-sales-estimates.html

Retailers are more likely to have ordered a single copy on some books than to have ordered nine.

>So a lot depends on how Marvel handled rounding — but it's possible the full overship could have been either more or less than 10% depending on how things netted out.

Does Marvel really need comics to be profitable? I was Disney and was feeling pretty evil, I would just burn a million to completely murder DC: I would do a nostalgia-driven soft-reboot of everything (which they're supposedly already doing) but I would drop the prices of every single comic to one buck. I would murder DC on price alone. Once DC is driven out of the industry, I would just rise prices again.

Worked for Starbucks.

>>
>>90074667
Yes they need to be profitable on their own to pay their own employees. It has little to do with Disney at large.

Hell Disney is rich enough that if Marvel can't sustain itself they will just cancel the entire line and pay some other company to make books like they did with video games.

>I would just burn a million to completely murder DC
Give this intern TWO cents.
>>
>>90074667

That would kill the industry and Disney would look even more evil that it is now. Besides they use comics as market studies among the "nerd people" to see what sticks and what not.

Then again Marlel is going to crush the industry either way so why now

DC doesn't need to sell more than Marvel to survive, they just have to profit. Also don't forget Warner owns them, so they aren't in a big disadvantage compared to Marvel/Disney.
>>
>>90074667

At his point it's more likely that Disney gets tired of the comic division making a fool of themselves and license their characters to other company, like DC for instance

But whatever you say buds
>>
>>90074667
Along with everything else that's been said Starbucks can set their own prices since they have a franchise model. That sort of drop to a dollar in itself might kill LCSes more than DC because they would have to pay for shipping still and not make as much profit off the sales. And honestly the prices aren't what keeps people from buying comics. There's no LCS who doesn't have longboxes full of $1 issues that they can't move.

>They are rising prices?

Just the monthly titles.

At least one comic book store has openly complained and is dropping DC outside of special orders though as digital prices are remaining at 2.99. Some are interpreting it as DC trying to push people to go digital.

The titles going to 3.99 (and staying 2.99 digitally) are:

>All Star Batman
>Batgirl
>Batgirl and the Birds of Prey
>Batman Beyond
>Batwoman
>Blue Beetle
>Cyborg
>The Hellblazer
>New Super-Man
>Red Hood and the Outlaws
>Super Sons
>Supergirl
>Superwoman
>Teen Titans
>Titans
>Trinity

Serious Question for any comic experts in here. But how do these comics compare to the Japanese manga market, with comics like One Piece, Attack on Titan, Assassination Classroom, Haikyu? Which are the current best sellers I believe.

Do American comics sell better or less than Japanese comics?

A female character starring in a good book is inherently feminist. Marvel just doesn't seem to understand that and pushes a bunch of cringey shit.

I actually think it's an interesting character to play with. They could do the meta-deadpool thing with her as it was her schtick before his. >>
>>90080282
It's because the 121,407 is inflated by the Funko Marvel Collector Corps box having a variant of #1. Marvel seems to use the Collector Corps box and other subscription boxes for their new titles, which get included in the Diamond charts, so it's a matter of checking what comics got included in these boxes and comparing them to what their chart numbers are.

Like for instance Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme had a high sales on #1 but drastically dropped with #2. You wouldn't understand why unless you knew that Funko included a variant of #1 with their Doctor Strange box.

Here's another one:

03/15 Guardians Team-up #1 – 155,388
03/15 Guardians Team-up #2 – 38,390 (-75.3%)

Huge fucking drop right? Puzzling, until you find out that the very first Collector Corps box included a variant of Guardians Team-Up #1 (with the Avengers logo being prominent because it was an Avengers themed box; They stopped doing that, I think)

Secret Wars #1 got included in the August 2015 box and Civil War II #1 got included in the June 2016 box but the sales on those debut issues would've been high anyway because they were first issues to events.
>>
>>90081037
But June 2015's box was Ant-Man themed and the comic they included was Ant-Man #5.

Ant-Man #5 was out in May 2015:

http://www.comicsbeat.com/marvel-month-to-month-sales-charts-may-2015-prepare-your-5-bills/

01/15 Ant-Man #1 – 73,370
02/15 Ant-Man #2 – 40,192 (-45.2%)
03/15 Ant-Man #3 – 37,139 (- 7.6%)
04/15 Ant-Man #4 – 31,637 (-14.8%)
05/15 Ant-Man #5 – 83,095 (+162.7%)

Notice that huge spike it got? Xavier Lancel said this in his analysis:

>There is probably a special retailer deal behind this explosion in sales because, even taking the movie release into account, you can’t expect to lure so many people into reading the floppy final part of an arc!

The discount is probably real (it would also explain Funko ordering a lot, too; need to keep it under cost for the whole box) but Lancel didn't know about the subscription boxes.

April 2015: Guardians Team-Up #1
June 2015: Ant-Man #5
August 2015: Secret Wars #1 (Hickman one)
October 2015: Invincible Iron Man #1 (the ANAD version, where Bendis started his run)
December 2015: Guardians of Infinity #1
February 2016: Deadpool #1 (the ANAD Duggan run)
April 2016: Black Panther #1 (Ta-Nehisi Coates run)
June 2016: Civil War II #1
August 2016: Amazing Spider-Man #16 (the start of "Before Dead No More", lead-up to Clone Conspiracy)
October 2016: Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme #1
December 2016: Champions #1
February 2017: Inhumans vs X-Men #1

Some of these would be boosted by other factors (being an event, multiple variant cover debuts), so the while the subscription box would boost things it wouldn't have affected sales too greatly. Like for instance Black Panther #1 was 268,782 and #2 was 77,654 at first, but actually had reorders that made the final numbers for #1 at 286,755 and #2 at 102,366 so that was going to do okay for a while even without the Funko boxes.

But then you end up getting something like Amazing Spider Man #16:

07/16 Amazing Spider-Man#15 - 93,582 (+42.6%)
08/16 Amazing Spider-Man#16 - 185,342 (+98.1%)
08/16 Amazing Spider-Man#17 - 74,869 (-59.6%)

Which gets hard to tell if this was sudden interest in the Dead No More/Clone Conspiracy story or boosted because of the subscription box.

Or Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme:

10/16 Dr Strange Sorcerers Supreme #1 - 149,710
11/16 Dr Strange Sorcerers Supreme #2 - 29,349 (-80.4%)
12/16 Dr Strange Sorcerers Supreme #3 - 25,054 (-14.6%)

Where a lot of those orders probably were due to the subscription box.

More than that. MARVEL Comics is an IP farm. A throwaway comic character like say, X-23 or Jess Jones could become a multi million dollar asset. The next Marvel blockbuster could be based on an arc like say Old Man Logan.

Keeping the comics allows them to continue to get ideas for a profit. And Marvel still turns a profit, if not much of one.

Not DC, its owner is Warner. Eliminating the book division would be a bad idea, but its one that could happen.

Outsource it to Dark Horse. I want Mignola to write all the horror/fantasy characters.
>>
>>90083050
It would likely never happen because lots of properties have bizarre deals where books are required to be printed in order to maintain ownership of the property.

>>90082989
The pressure of a collapsing market should push innovation. Something needs to change. The obvious solution is to open up the direct market and use the parent corps. to negotiate with retail chains. Of course the books would need to dump their culture wars BS.
>>
>>90083082
That would be amazing, but Mingola is retiring. And sadly he is the only one who has the juice to get Marvel's business over other companies like Image or Dynamite or Boom.

Also any attempt to farm out would raise issues of ownership. No major creator working at a third party company wants to waste original ideas and characters on something they won't own.

The industry won't collapse, LCS just will have to sell more merchandising. DC still tries to make good books but Marvel just doesn't give a fuck anymore and it's a full blown IP farm just testing characters for other markets. Legacy characters? That wasn't because of diversity, that was to add them to the MCU or the netflixverse or whatever

They'll keep going but the times of the industry being independent and people making a living out of good stories instead of toy commercials are gone

That's overall units. Meaning it count's TPB's and all the other weird shit they ship that counts as a unit.

Share of Units in Top 300 is the relevant number for on-going series since literally every on-going by Marvel and DC are in the top 300 and those are what were overshipped.

Those are absolutely pathetic numbers from Marvel. Especially when you take into account the fact that they shipped more books than DC, had 3 events, a relaunch, tonnes of incentive based variants and tonnes of retailer exclusives. Marvel should be panicking.

Wanna know how many issues of "Justice League of America" #1 were pushed, even with its fifty variant covers?

307,734 issues.

I chalk it up to this:
http://www.dccomics.com/blog/2012/11/09/first-look-at-the-variant-covers-for-justice-league-of-america-1
>Note to retailers: There is no minimum purchase needed to order these variants and you will be able to order whichever covers you like.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I believe "US Avengers" #1 had retailers order a certain number of regular-cover issues first before they were eligible for state-variant covers.
>>
>>90092526
Never mind; Google came through.

http://icv2.com/articles/previews/view/35566/preview-u-s-avengers-1-variant-covers
>Note: Retailers must meet or exceed 200% of orders for Uncanny Avengers #13 with orders for U.S. Avengers #1 regular cover, then variant is order all you want.

I wonder why they specified "Uncanny Avengers" #13, seeing how that book sold a total of 37,908 books in August 2016. They should have gone with something like "Amazing Spider-Man" #16 (185,342 books) instead.
>>
>>90092526

Turns out the incentive game is starting to fail
>>
>>90092622
It almost certainly has. There are very few books in DC's lineup that regularly have incentive variants; all other variants are order-as-you-please.

Speaking of which, have they been having variants since Rebirth swung into high?
>>
>>90092610
>They should have gone with something like "Amazing Spider-Man" #16 (185,342 books) instead.

That's cause they know retailers wouldn't order more if that was the case. Last year a lot of retailers said they started not ordering to get the variants because it wasn't worth the cost.

All-Star Batman
Aquaman
Batman
Batman Beyond
Batwoman
Blue Beetle
Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye
Deadman (three-issue mini has now finished)
Death of Hawkman
Deathstroke
Detective Comics
Doom Patrol
Green Lanterns
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps
Hellblazer
Justice League
Justice League of America
Kamandi Challenge
Midnighter and Apollo
Mother Panic
New Super-Man
Nightwing
Red Hood and the Outlaws
Shade the Changing Girl
Suicide Squad
Superman
Super Sons
Teen Titans
Titans
Trinity

Everything sans Batgirls books and Action Comics.

Deadman was such a piece of shit.
>>
>>90100828
It was super gay but also kind of cute, plus the art was pretty decent.

I've been meaning to read Action Comics as I've heard the arc with Lex was decent. I've asked my LCS to hook me up with all the Superman Reborn and aftermath tie-ins so I'll be getting AC for a little bit.

I don't read the Flash either. Don't know why, have heard decent things about that too.

Superwoman I don't pull either

Cute it was not, my friend.

AC arc with Lex was decent. Latest Flash arc with the Rogues has been pretty good too.
>>
>>90100875
Don't bother with Flash until after the December Issue. The Godspeed and Shade Arcs were weak as heck but this current Rogues Arc is pretty solid. I swear to fucking god if Godspeed is the villain of Flash's next season I'm gonna lose it, can't they have a non-speedster big bad for the season? Fuck I'll be fine with the Cicada Cult, at least a cult worshiping the Speed Force would be neat

Yay?

The first arc with the new team was good but the AU arc felt insanely rushed.
>>
>>90101932

Well the first arc was actually a mini I think and basically an entry for the solo/foolkiller and slapstick ongoings that are all getting cancelled now.

Why should we be supporting these guys again?

You mean the Marvel strategy lol.

You can't just subtract 10% you moron, that's not how math works.

My faith in humankind has just received another blow.

Pretty sure they are on all the books still. I get my Tim Sale Batman every other week. Any of them I buy two issues of I get a variant and regular and it's been steady since the beginning.

Told the guy to take the second off my list if it ever became incentive based and he's yet to do so.
>>
>>90102157

Well technically we're not sure what was pushed and what wasn't pushed and what was bumped and what wasn't bumped since most of it is hearsay besides anecdotal evidence from comic shop twitter accounts. That being said, it's all hypothetical anyway.
>>
>>90102249
Yeah, but if 10% was added, you subtract 9.0909% to get the original number.

And the numbers are all estimates to begin with, extrapolated from retailer polling and the index numbers Diamond provides. Actual numbers aren't released.

The order the list in is right every month, but comparing month-to-month can have errors crop up in performance.

Is there a hope that if this gets under 100k, DC will replace King?
>>
>>90102824
He's part of the team behind the Button and it'll pick up during that so he should make it through the first 24 and finish the full first year since rebirth.

But as much as I like King when compared to Snyder's over-the-top garbage, I do think his run should be kept short. I Am Bane was borderline autistic. If he's unwilling to write the dialogue differently I'd prefer him off the book.
