Technically depending on the nature of their super strength power you don't 'have' to make them ripped, but some actual muscles and definition can well emphasize their strength.

Honestly it has more to do with character design than it does in universe explanation.

Superman is this idealistic figure who inspires everyone, it makes sense to make him a body builder looking Adonis type even if he doesn't strictly need to be one physically.

Hulk on the other hand is a lot more monstrous in his proportions because he's meant to be intimidating, not inspiring. Personally I think evil-Superman incarnations like Injustice Supes should be more power lifter and less body builder to be more intimidating and more about raw strength than a physical ideal.

A skinny Superman doesn't really work with the character. Skinny but actually super strong character designs work better for those who are more everyday individuals like Spider-Man. I don't think it works well with Superman's origins, it better fits people who got their powers in some sort of event, and they were scrawny before said event.

A fat Superman I can't really picture just because Superman is again, an inspirational figure and there's nothing inspiring about being fat. I do think a fat but actually super strong and fast Etc. Hero could be really good though, maybe a largely apathetic metahuman who takes a stance of non-intervention and his weight while not physically impeding him is a visual cue for his laziness and apathy.

I think the answer for either mind/magic or strength are all the same: it depends on the character you want to make.
You could make a character that depends on psychic power or magical incantations softer, fatter because they don't physically exert themselves as much or you can make them the opposite and have them lithe, skinny to downright sickly and bony because they don't have much reason to have any mass at all. Or you can have them be She-Hulk wizard because you want to subvert expectation, it doesn't matter as long as it's consistent with the character you're trying to convey

Depends on what the source of the strength is. If a krypton isn't or some kind of robot or something, then skinny strong. Kryptonians haveca field that they use for superhuman strength. If they are just raw strength, then muscular.

You've gotta consider that the body is made of 3 parts.

Bones, fat, and muscle.
So there's a lot of ways you can balance those out.
You can give them a really feminine and slender bone structure, along with a good amount of well defined muscle, but still certain layer of fat to smooth it out a bit, not going for the full ripped look.

I'd like to see more instances like this happening. Normal woman gains super strength, becomes a superhero, and ends up gradually bulking up more and more as a result of constantly using her new strength.

I've had this loose idea in my head for a series about such a superheroine trying to maintain her secret identity when she's the only woman in town buff enough to be said superheroine.

I have an issue with Superman looking jacked, actually. Getting "swole" comes from pushing yourself and having micro-tears form in your muscle tissue which then heal. Superman doesn't actually strain his "muscles" at all, so there's no reason he'd ever develop a physique.

One of my favorite Superman appearances was in flash Point Paradox, pic related.
