That particular angle has never been explored before, usually we just see Steven feeling bad about some abstract values such as "Don't kill people" being broken but this took it deeper.

He doesn't leave the room feeling totally reassured but he feels like less of a tool. It was basically just a bit of soul searching. It's also the kind of episode that HAS to happen or else everyone will go "Why doesn't Steven ever visit his mom in the room?" forever.

Well, Steven doesn't have the capacities of a million nerds obsessing over every inch of his life.
And this is still nominally for children, so we really need to see him have these thoughts.
Really, his thoughts mostly revolve around the daily grind, not the abstract musings over the intentions and motives of his mother.
He only lately began experiencing doubt regarding her sainthood and is now forming a more realistic picture as he begins the very complex process of developing differenciated, critical thought as he finds out what lies he has been told and understanding why this was necessary, proving that he has outgrown the necessity as he goes.
They could have spent more time in several episodes with just him reflecting on his mom, but I don't think they want to go that heavy too often. They need to keep kids entertained and that isn't best served by having a chubby boy monologue every episode, piecing his findings together.
Especially in an 11-min format where you are already compressing shit like mad.
Seriously, just Storm In The Room could have filled 22 mins no problem and they shoved it into half that. They can't spare a minute here and there.

They had to talk a lot in the beginning because their characters needed to be established.

Now you know them and they've started to get along with each other as more of a unit so Pearl going "By the way, I'M still smart and clever!!" would feel extraneous.

Connie worried about her mother and then Steven watched them being so happy to see each other, despite meeting every day.
This pushes Steven to think about his mother and feel left out.
It touches upon some similar notes, but Mindful Education was all about communication in relationships and helping one another and seeing what the real problems are.
This was about what Steven misses, what wants to believe about his mom, what he fears might be true about his mom, realising that he cannot truly know and accepting that the truth must be somewhere inbetween all those dots, that Rose was something different, more and less than all that.
Yes, both use Connie to put Steven's struggle in perspective, but one was about where she could help him, one was about where she could not.
A bit of a contrast there, recalling the previous lections to point out where this goes differently.

I think hit the diamond is when they managed to balance every character in the same episode while keeping it entertaining.
The main reason for Pearls bitching in season 1 was Amethyst, but now they're friends and don't have a reason to be mad at each other again, Amethyst has matured herself too, so she's not acting idiotic trying to imitate Pearl anymore.
Garnet isn't mysterious anymore which made her cooler.
Its healthy development, but it loses something interesting the characters once had.
