Westerners the thing killing your shows is your unjustifiably exorbitant VA costs

A AAA seiyuu in Japan also costs an exorbitant amount of money.

It's not really the VA costs. The entire production crew gets paid better than in Japan because of labor laws.

There are three tiers of VAs in America.

>LA Union
The highest tier. LA Union VAs get paid insane amounts of money but strike anyway if kept in the recording booth for more than 2 hours. They're almost Hollywood celeb status in what they make (Simpsons VAs, the max end of the spectrum, earned more than most Hollywood celebs). Considered the best quality VAs but cost an arm and a leg.

>Canadian Union
Cheaper because they don't get royalties even for prelay (LA Unions actors do, which is part of their insane cost). Generally good VAs, but the pool is so small (particularly the Vancouver crew) that you will hear the same ten or eleven actors in absolutely everything, over and over and over again. They have range, but you'll get sick of them quickly.

>Non-Union VAs from New York/Texas
Absolute bottom of the barrel cheapest resort. Primarily work in anime dubbing because there are no royalties for overlay work (since it is considered a part of translation and not "creative). You get what you pay for. Many of them weren't even actors when hired (the Funi cast when they took over DBZ from Ocean) and it shows. Few graduate to the LA Unions because they never improve no matter how many years of practice they get. They are only hired because they are the cheapest possible option outside of just having the writers and artists do the fucking voices.

So those are our VA options in America. It's either pay out the ass for good VA work, or go non-union and get heinous shit.
>>
>>89945207
Executive producers are a bigger drain on budgets than VAs.
>>
>>89945576
They're too busy actually having significant others and children.
>>

>implying respectable adults watch anime

But if you do anime voices, you can easily become a household name.

Considered the best quality VAs but cost an arm and a leg.

They also negotiated for mandatory pay raises every 2 seasons, which is why so many cartoons end at season 2. Unless it is a merchandising/ad revenue machine, the shows don't justify the increased VA costs past a second season and end.

So we can thank the bottomless greed of the LA voice actors for that, too.
>>
If it means we wont get the obnoxious female VAs animus have then I'd say it's worth it.

Hedonist Libertarians are the cancer killing society.
>>
>>89945207
Then what is it that's killing anime? That's in a far more dire state of decline than western cartoons. Unless you like moeshit, I guess.
>>
>>89945207
one episode of family guy cost WAY more than that.
>>
>>89946128
>What tier are the American VAs you see everywhere, like Kevin Michael Richardson, John DiMaggio, or Grey DeLisle?

LA union.

Canadian union are guys like Scott McNeil and Gary Chalk.

Non-union are guys like Sean Schemmel and Veronica Taylor.

There is some fluidity. If you have dual US?Canadian citizenship, you can belong to both the LA and Canadian unions (but you have to get a lot of work to justify it since the dues are insane). Tara Strong, Cree Summer, Maurice LaMarche and Ian Corlett have worked for the LA and Canadians unions simultaneously.

Very rarely, non-union VAs will be able to transition to the LA unions if they're good enough. Sam Riegel, Michael Sinterniklaas and Mike Pollock all managed to move from non-union work in NY to Union work in LA.
>>
>>89946046

These VA faction splits in North America are also what prevents a lot of talent crossover.

It's why we couldn't get the original 80s TMNT actors in the Turtles Forever movie, because they were union and the 2003 cast were non-union, so they were forbidden from working together. Also why we won't hear any 2003 actors in the 2012 cartoon if they ever decided to crossover. 2012 is union.

Scott McNeil had to go uncredited in Full Metal Alchemist because that dub was non-union and he belongs to the Canadian unions, so he got paid under the table for that gig. A lot of LA union actors had to use fake names in the 80s to do non union dub work (Cam Clarke went by several aliases at the time).

Our warring VA factions cause a lot of drama and trouble throughout the animation industry.

>anime is dying
In what dimension??? Anime is more popular than ever.
>>
>>89946046
>but strike anyway if kept in the recording booth for more than 2 hours.

I think the only time the LA voice actors unions went on strike regarding recording length was in the late 80s. It used to be max 8 hours and they negotiated it down to 6 hours.

But yeah, a lot of VAs refuse to stay the full length they're contracted for and will finish their sessions as quickly as possible. They often schedule 3 or 4 sessions a day because the more shows they record for the more money they make. Also a reason why so many of the most prominent VAs sound like they're phoning it in. They rarely have any understanding or passion for the characters they're portraying and just want to get in, out and on to the next gig in as few takes as possible.

That said Vancouver VA's are my favourites.

For the most part.

>What if you wanted to cast some one from another becaise you think the voice could fit to another character?

If you want crossover between LA and Canada, it has to be a VA who belongs to both unions.

If you want crossover between non-union and the LA unions, the non-union VA has to either join the union or the LA union VA has to work under an alias for the non-union production.

Shit sux, yo.
