Is the way that Marvel's psychics casually poke around in people's heads supposed to be even remotely defensible?

Like, I remember in the olden times, back before Charles Xavier's character had been as thoroughly villainized, he seemed to promote psychics showing restraint at most times and only pushing people's brains around in case of emergencies

But right around I wanna say the Morrison era, Emma comes onto the main team and she basically does what she wants to whoever she wants whenever she wants with her powers, with only her flimsy moral fiber as a filter. And everyone else seemed to follow suit, even Xavier, retroactively.

So... that's fucked up, right? Like their behavior is justification enough for a significant bit of mutant paranoia. I'm surprised even the other X-Men don't all go around in Magneto helmets.
>>
It's one of the reasons I hated Bendis' run on All-New X-men.

It looks like he's setting up forJean to go too far with her newfound powers of telepathy, and have the other X-men confront her about it.

Then that moment never came, and she's allowed to abuse her powers as much as she likes.
>>
>>89936653
Marvel psychics are assholes. Martian Manhunter thought poking in other minds was extremely rude
>>
>>89936653
Anon, we live in a world where if psychics were a real thing a huge chunk of the population would have absolutely no problem with them just flicking through everyone's mind just so they could occasionally go to the police and say "hey, that guy has unflattering opinions on minorities"

SJW's honestly see absolutely nothing wrong with this
>>
>>89937555
You could literally use the exact same argument except replace "unflattering opinions about minorities" with "vaguely unpatriotic and antisocial thoughts"

being a chickenshit who is willing to sacrifice freedom and privacy for "safety" is not something that has a unique political alignment
>>
>>89937555
>a huge chunk of the population would have absolutely no problem with them just flicking through everyone's mind

>Nobody would have a problem with psychic assholes violating their privacy on a whim.

Are you delusional?

Yes they would. It's a mental Stop-and-Frisk
>>
>>89937693
>Are you delusional?
Nigga, I've heard people in person say they had no issue with warrentless police searches because "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear."
>>
Who thought it was a good idea to have the teenagers decide what other teenagers sexual preferences were?

You're a teenager, you're thinking about sex from just about the stupidest things.

Shit they even dismiss the option that he's Bi just because Jean said she didn't think he was.

It's literally the stupidest thing to come out of 2016 in Marvel, I'm not even joking. But you can't argue about this or else you're a bigot. So now Bobby's gay, he's never really been in love with women, no matter what the last 40 years have shown us otherwise.
>>
>>89937742
They only say that because either the truely have nothing to hide, or they're confident that the police can't find anything to connect them to their darker secrets. Physical evidence and psychic evidence are two different things.

A pedophile who's good at hiding his stuff would have no problems with searches because the police won't find his stash.

You cant hide thoughts.

Also, a few people don't speak for the entire world.

>>89937798

Actually you still can argue against it.

Point out that Lobdell did a better coming out story with Northstar (because it was Northstar's decision and not someone else's) and see the reactions. mainly because Lobdell's Alpha Flight issue was heavily derided back then but now looks better in light of how that scene Bendis wrote was so botched

Name one thing iceman does as a gay character that wiccan didn't do first/better.
and to respond to OP yeah, Xavier was against casual mind fuckery because he had done it and it never ended well. The Xavier as an asshole plot was supposed to show why Xavier taught restraint, he was a super douche as a young man and saw the repercussions of being a super douche. But the writers either weren't good enough or missed the point entirely.

Morrison's characterization of Emma is that she's a bad person who happens to work for the good guys. On the other side, Xavier's greater scope can make him callous to the needs of others.

The problem comes when writers portray it as good rather than an reflection of mankind's pettiness and greatness.

How is a person supposed to react to that information without having an identity crisis?
>>
>>89938357

Yeah, as if THEIR shit doesn't stink. If they were villains, it'd be fine.

Funny though, we hate heroes who act like assholes but are fine with villains who do just that. At the same time, a hero that's perfect is also dis-likable because they're TOO perfect.

It's why when you have events or arcs where people lose their powers, the psychics are always the ones that end up being the most effected(affected?) by it, because they're whole deal of being able to control people no longer works, and that means they've got nothing else going for them.

I mean shit, at the end of the day Jean Grey is a fucking teenager with skinny little baby arms.

Because they're villains, they're expected to be assholes.

We despise a character like Killgrave when he controls other people and makes them do things against there will - it's despicable. But we're also SUPPOSED to despise them.

When Ms Martian mindfucks Superboy trying to erase memories of an argument it doesn't sit well with us because she's supposed to be one of the good guys
>>
>>89938628

Namor's not really a hero though. Namor's a wildcard. Hell, IIRC, he was laughing when an evil group was about to destroy the world with a weapon, but then stopped laughing when that weapon would affect HIS world as well.
>>
>>89938573

>have brief moment of worrying about your penis size

Literally Marvel's first hero. He may play the antagonist sometimes but so does everyone else, in fact, Captain America is right now the MU main antagonist.

As I already pointed out Namor's an asshole.

Tempus was so lazily written in Bendis's script it was appalling to me. I have spoken with enough Australians to know that at least two or three times per conversation, a non-Aussie is going to have to stop and ask what a particular idiom means, and that is a wilful decision on Australia's part as a society. The fact that Bendis never once gave her a single piece of genuinely Australian-seeming dialogue was EASILY one of the top ten bits of wasted potential in the entire series.

And yes, Obamacare. I only regret that those two aren't regular characters in the series after the first four issues. I had a lot of fun writing them, especially together.

Oh my god, my editor and I have spoken for hours about various plans and ideas. He sent me a full page of suggested dialogue from the Guardians of the Galaxy crossover, and I howled with laughter so hard upon reading it that I was seeing stars. I won't be changing a single word of what he suggested for that.

Issue 8's Angel/Angel teamup is pretty audacious, requiring by far the largest number of art edits of any single issue we've done so far, and addresses one of the truly inexplicable things about Bendis's scripts.

Our long-term plans for X23 when she shows up really make me laugh thinking about her place in the team. There's a lot of good stuff there.

But I think that if I can pull of the complexity of the idea I have in mind, the thing I'm MOST excited about is the pure chaos of Battle of the Atom and the impenetrable motives of the villains in it.

Oh, and I CAN mention this a little.

There's a character introduced in issue 6, who is cloaked in shadows, his name never revealed, his face hidden, who is depicted as an accomplice and confidante of Mystique's.

The way he was presented, it honestly felt like one of two things might have been going on here. Either Bendis introduced this character with the intention of his identity being a big reveal for later in the story which he never got around to... or else he just wrote him as "some guy" and didn't realize that this random nameless extra was being presented in a way which would arouse curiosity. He appears again in issue 7, and then never again.

I took one look at Some Guy, and decided that he would be the most interesting character in the story. We have some big, BIG plans for him.

Marvel foolishly released previews of these pages with no dialogue at the time, which allowed me the luxury of speculating as to what the characters were saying and doing. I took full advantage of that and a meme was born.

Wait why is older Bobby shorter? How the fuck does that happen?

Damn, this is actually quite disturbing, especially the panel in the last one where Bobby's trying to recite the names of the girls but gets more and more confused.
>>
>>89940249

Okay, will do. How about if I literally re-write every page of the entire series from the very beginning?

http://unxannyrewrites.tumblr.com/issues

Boom. There, have about seven issues worth and counting. How's that for snappy service?
>>
>>89940254

I was going for a very, very "dark comedy" approach with that scene.

Have you read the Scarlet Witch series, featuring a character called the EMERALD Warlock?
>>
Did Jean also make Bobby attracted to shitskins?

I don't recall him ever having a colored gf.
>>

WHAT

Seriously?

Hahaha, no fucking way. No, I haven't, but now I'm curious.

I still hold that "Jean Makes Bobby Gay" will be the "Carol Is Raped By Her Own Child" of this generation

It's pretty near maximum dark already. Adding a faint lone tear sparkle in shadow of his face on the I'll kill you for this, jean panel would make it full force dark max.
>>
>>89940317

Hahaha. WELL FINE THEN. But I swear I didn't know at the time. I came up with this joke months and months ago as part of a setup for a joke in issue 9 I'd wanted to do pretty much from the outset of the rewrite.
>>
>>89940327

Well, read Full-New X-Men to the end of issue 8 and I can promise you something pretty close to that.

(But yes, that would have been fantastic if I'd thought of it at the time. Damn, the benefit of hindsight)
>>
>>89940067
Awesome. The Juggs was one of the only reasons I was reading X-Men back in the day. As much as I liked Fear Itself, I was annoyed that he got taken out of the comics. It's nice to see that our big Juggy-boy is growing up.

If Juggs is back, i'm gonna need to get back into the comic.

>Is the way that Marvel's psychics casually poke around in people's heads supposed to be even remotely defensible?
Not at all. It's a deliberate invasion of a person's privacy. If the psychics feel they have the right to do that then by that logic they should have no problem with other characters abusing them with their powers.
>>
>>89940333
Oh, I'm not saying you stole the name, by any means. If anything, I thought you may get a kick out the character.

That never happened. I refuse to accept it and choose to live in denial.

Wait, did they come out and say that the whole "Bobby, you're gay" scene was her re-writing his brain to make him gay? You're fucking lying.

Pics or didn't happen.

They haven't come out and said it, but it's pretty widely-accepted headcanon throughout the fan community.

When Hank Pym infamously hit his wife across the face, it wasn't actually intended to happen that way in the script. In the script, the idea was that he was just gesticulating around wildly, making grand sweeping gestures with his arms as he excitedly talked and accidentally hit her in one of these motions. But the way the artist rendered it... that's not how fans received it. That's not how the story was understood. People drew their own conclusions, and gradually over the course of decades, that interpretation which was never in the script became canon because everyone had accepted that that's what 'really' happened.

I think that in time, Bobby's sexuality retcon will come to be viewed the same way.

With the most grandiloquent theatrical flourish imaginable. Draw out of your imagination the mental image of a cartoonishly exaggerated caricature of a Shakespearean actor in a cartoon aimed at very young children who have never previously been exposed to Shakespeare and you're in the right ballpark.
