Let's be clear. This is a post singularity setting in which the American human population is on friendly terms with beneficial strong AI, and yet at least one war has been taught with active AI participants (in mechanized armor divisions), yet is never discussed and apparently a secret AI underground power structure that no one, not even other AIs, criminal, or military knows about.

Think of all the interesting stories that could take place in this setting. All the humans that are left are kept in the dark, as the AI controls the world, the wars were actually the culling of populations in Africa, India, China and the ME in an effort to limit human use of Earth's finite resources while AIs ready themselves to strip the planet bar and go interstellar. Humans in America, blissfully ignorant as the AIs control all media and communication.

I'm so happy Jeff Hacks is writing this story about....Fucking nothing.

There's actually a good chunk of post-singularity tech in the background. Hanner's dad pretty much launched the whole thing: Fully realized AIs, nanites, orbital colonies, whole nine yards.

So little of this tech comes into play in lieu of the slice-of-life coffee shop stuff, which is kinda sad. The only time it really comes up is as subtle metaphors for racial issues.

It's supposedly vaguely post singularity, but AI are still new enough that society is still adjusting to them, and technology hasn't actually changed much.

So it's kinda like the Marvel Universe setting, where there's really fancy technology being developed by people, but it's generally not been shared much with the world at large.
