Sorry, but "how dark/vibrant should my superhero costume be" is among the nerdiest possible considerations for anything (much less popularity). And nerdy in the worst possible way.

Not to disparage a good color scheme, but I think they need to worry about actual direction before they worry about art direction.

The costumes aren't bad at all, but the photography of Snyder's movies makes them look bad.

The Batman costume is good, but Affleck's face under the mask is goofy and his body makes his Batman look like a fat uncle.

Superman's and Wonder Woman's costumes could use brighter colors, but that's it. They are otherwise the best looking live-action costumes.

The only thing I agree with you about is the colors. Keeping outdated things like the outside underwear is where I draw the line. But I will say that making the screen less dreary looking won't help a movie enough when the tone is a dark and the script is nonsense. MCU is doing so good mainly because they take their time with development. That's DC's problem, they want that kind of development for their universe, but they don't want to take the time and movies to do so. Wonder Woman looks like a step in the right direction. If they can get out individual movies, and have them be good on their own and stand alone, they could start to move towards the stuff they want, like the Justice League movie, but it mainly depends on their effort put into their basic movies. Hell, just a basic Batman with a good, not stupid or dumb or new, but good Joker would go miles in the long run for them, like Dark Knight was able to do.

If that were true why do the Marvel Movies do better generally than the DC ones? Or were you being sarcastic? I think it has more to do with how it's presented than content at times. In a MCU you can usually see what's happening the fight scenes from MoS and Bvs were hard to follow and filmed kind of murky/dark. They just weren't that fun to watch and hard to keep track of the action in a theatre.

It also comes down to the execution as well as how often the director allows the audience to come up for air.

Too often, people mistake "dark and gritty" for "humorless and dull" when a well made dark story still has moments where the audience is allowed to laugh and briefly come up for air before diving back into the abyss.

Like take shit like se7en, Berserk, or early Supernatural; they were all extremely dark, brooding, and depressing when they needed to be but they still had moments of levity to break up darkness.

In the DCEU though basically just inject darkness upon darkness and the only times when the audience laughs are scenes that weren't meant to be funny (MARTHA!!!!!) or they just come off as forced (Now that's what I call a killer app).
